First of all, I love those pictures!! So creative. Feel free to post them here for inspiration. I decided I need to get one as well!
I searched from eBay and there are so many! Obviously it needs to be clear (!!), but what size is good? I don't have a good macro-lens yet, just some basic zooms and a 50mm.
Been a while since I had my crystal call out. The are a lot of fun. I think mine is 100 mm (4 inch). Honestly any size is good. I have seen some fun shots with multiple small ones.
I first looked at the 40mm, but seeing these pics I realized that might be too small. Or I need to get a few of them, multiple small ones in one shot seems like a fun idea!! :) and maybe one bigger one.
Also, there is a fun app for your phone camera called "Marble Cam." Kind of gimmicky, but it produces some interesting visuals. I think it was only a few dollars. Here is an example (I was shooting a picture frame at the craft store, for orientation):
Another, taken in the National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. My advice...don't place your crystal ball on a tombstone...it may result in some fine scratches in the surface. Lesson learned, and it's easy enough to make sure the scratches are positioned at the bottom of the crystal when using it, but still... I purchased mine from Amazon, com, I think it's a 4-inch one, I don't remember the millimeters size. It was around $25.
@mittens@rosiekerr@sjoblues@sjoblues more awesome pics!! I'm really going to order mine soon. And thanks to you guys, I now know to get 80-100mm one! Hadn't even thought about scratches, guess those things are quite sensitive. Some seemed to come with a holder, that might be a great idea.
@mzzhope Definitely a cautionary tale worth reading. Although I have not set anything on fire, I have held mine up in bright sunlight only to have what felt like a laser beam pierce my palm. No delay, it's an instant and very intense jolt of pain.
I loved playing with hers so much that I had to get my own!
Mine is very small (50mm) and therefore more portable, but I have to admit that a larger one would be nicer. I played with a larger one in a store and loved how much more it included, but found it too heavy and too expensive :(
@miata2u Hi Peggy, I haven't read through this whole thread...but if your ball is too heavy to hand hold, just try finding stable surfaces to set it on (it's surprising how even a piece of uneven drift wood or a pile of rocks, will offer a safe nook for the ball to rest in). The one I have is from Amazon, relatively inexpensive (under $20) 80mm with stand.
Holding the ball and taking the picture even sounds a bit too hard to do at the same time.. I don't have a macro lens, so not sure if my hand would even reach far enough :D

I am a little addicted as you can see! I got mine from Amazon for less than $20. It is about the size of a baseball (3 in.). Here is a link...

@rosiekerr i got the app, not the best results (i tried on pics I have in my camera), but gives the idea!
This is a tiny glass bottle stopper I picked up at a flea market. Fun but I think I need the larger sized $20 crystal ball from amazon.
My only proper attempt so far, forgot I had it but need to get using it after seeing these lovely photos. I found it harder than it looks though.
