Crystal ball owners!

September 27th, 2014
First of all, I love those pictures!! So creative. Feel free to post them here for inspiration. I decided I need to get one as well!

I searched from eBay and there are so many! Obviously it needs to be clear (!!), but what size is good? I don't have a good macro-lens yet, just some basic zooms and a 50mm.
September 27th, 2014
I got an 80mm meditation globe from amazon for $18.50. I use my 50mm lens with it.

Been a while since I had my crystal call out. The are a lot of fun. I think mine is 100 mm (4 inch). Honestly any size is good. I have seen some fun shots with multiple small ones.

Got mine on Amazon for 20 dollars. It is the size of a baseball.

@aecasey @mcrt @mzzhope great pics everyone! :)

I first looked at the 40mm, but seeing these pics I realized that might be too small. Or I need to get a few of them, multiple small ones in one shot seems like a fun idea!! :) and maybe one bigger one.

I am a little addicted as you can see! I got mine from Amazon for less than $20. It is about the size of a baseball (3 in.). Here is a link...

Ooo wait...one more!

September 27th, 2014
I think mine is a 80 mm one, too, and it seems to be a nice size. I haven't used it much yet. I need to get it out and try more with it.
September 27th, 2014
I got mine from Amazon, too, for about the same amount as everyone else:

Probably my best one, which I have sold a few copies of and which was used to promote a photography exhibit locally:

Also, there is a fun app for your phone camera called "Marble Cam." Kind of gimmicky, but it produces some interesting visuals. I think it was only a few dollars. Here is an example (I was shooting a picture frame at the craft store, for orientation):

Another, taken in the National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. My advice...don't place your crystal ball on a tombstone...it may result in some fine scratches in the surface. Lesson learned, and it's easy enough to make sure the scratches are positioned at the bottom of the crystal when using it, but still... I purchased mine from Amazon, com, I think it's a 4-inch one, I don't remember the millimeters size. It was around $25.

September 27th, 2014
i want one :)
September 27th, 2014
@mittens @rosiekerr @sjoblues @sjoblues more awesome pics!! I'm really going to order mine soon. And thanks to you guys, I now know to get 80-100mm one! Hadn't even thought about scratches, guess those things are quite sensitive. Some seemed to come with a holder, that might be a great idea.
September 27th, 2014
@rosiekerr oh and thanks for the app-idea! Though I don't use my phone camera that much anymore..
September 27th, 2014
They make great shots! I will be buying one soon. They are glass balls, crystal balls would be much more expensive.
September 27th, 2014
Attention all a Crystal Ball owners!I forgot to post this one!Read the image description ...its a warning and a cautionary tale!
September 27th, 2014
@mzzhope Definitely a cautionary tale worth reading. Although I have not set anything on fire, I have held mine up in bright sunlight only to have what felt like a laser beam pierce my palm. No delay, it's an instant and very intense jolt of pain.
September 27th, 2014
@mzzhope wow! That sounds bad. Another thing I hadn't thought of!
September 27th, 2014
@tande Thank you for starting this discussion. The photos are impressive and I want one!
September 27th, 2014
@tande Thanks for the topic discussion--I love these images and I want my own crystal ball, too! Thanks to everyone for the care and use tips,
September 28th, 2014
so cool! Just ordered mine, can't wait now, all your fault! :-)
September 28th, 2014
@randystreat @paulam @irisn hah, you're all very welcome! ;)

@rosiekerr i got the app, not the best results (i tried on pics I have in my camera), but gives the idea!
September 28th, 2014

This is a tiny glass bottle stopper I picked up at a flea market. Fun but I think I need the larger sized $20 crystal ball from amazon.
September 28th, 2014
@mrslaloggie that neck of the bottle adds something extra to the ball! Nice.
September 28th, 2014
Now I REALLY want one of these, added to my wish list... good to know about the cautions.
September 28th, 2014

My only proper attempt so far, forgot I had it but need to get using it after seeing these lovely photos. I found it harder than it looks though.
September 28th, 2014
First attempt, playing with @Taffy 's:

I loved playing with hers so much that I had to get my own!

Mine is very small (50mm) and therefore more portable, but I have to admit that a larger one would be nicer. I played with a larger one in a store and loved how much more it included, but found it too heavy and too expensive :(

September 28th, 2014
@sjoblues yes it happens so fast! Ouch! People really do need to be extra cautious!
September 29th, 2014
I didn't know anything about them and bought a larger on. No luck at all with it and it is too heavy to hold for long. I need a smaller one for sure.
October 1st, 2014
@miata2u Hi Peggy, I haven't read through this whole thread...but if your ball is too heavy to hand hold, just try finding stable surfaces to set it on (it's surprising how even a piece of uneven drift wood or a pile of rocks, will offer a safe nook for the ball to rest in). The one I have is from Amazon, relatively inexpensive (under $20) 80mm with stand.

@miata2u @lisatown

Holding the ball and taking the picture even sounds a bit too hard to do at the same time.. I don't have a macro lens, so not sure if my hand would even reach far enough :D

Thank you for the advice. I will try it again.
