Cannot upload from external iPhoto Library

October 13th, 2014
Hi guys! I would appreciate help if anyone can help. I got an MacbookAir two weeks ago. I am slowly learning to use it. I know I cannot keep photos on it. Not enough storage space. So I formatted a new external for Mac (expandable/journaled) and partitioned it so that there is a separate partition for Time Machine back ups of the system. The other partition is for storage. I made my iPhoto library there. It seems to be working okay. BUT....IF I try to upload a pic from it, I can browse to the file I made on the external, but then iPhoto library is "grayed out" so I cannot see anything in it.

I tried to view a photo from the library (that is fine) but when I hit share and try to email, it has "email server setting" issues. I need to work on that later.

Third thing I tried is to make a new email message, put in my address where I upload pics, and then TRY to attach a pic by browsing to my iPhoto library on my external. But it makes me attach the whole entire library! Again, it won't let me see individual pics to attach.

So I am stuck as to how to upload from the Mac right now. I can use my iPhone, but would like to fix this. Anyone know what is wrong?

Hi MaryBeth, iPhoto is a tricky beast and in fact I stopped using it and use Picasa instead. I also tried using an external drive on my Air and encountered the same issues, in fact at one point my whole library disappeared. Not that I want to frighten you!

As far as I remember (its been a while) when you upload from iPhoto you have to look for your photos folder not the iPhoto one and upload from there. Maybe someone else can be more specific and help you.

@dibzgreasley that does frighten me though! You liking Picassa? It may work to go find files at their actual location but my understanding is that there, they will be the originals and not edited versions. So frustrated right now!!! I thought a Mac was supposed to be user friendly and great for photogs? So u just do not use iPhoto at all now?

Hi Mary Beth, I use iPhoto on an iMac. I have a back-up of my photos on an external drive, too. I go into Finder and select the iPhoto Library on the external hard drive. If I do any edits, I save as a copy and then drag the edited photo into the iPhoto Library. iPhoto only saves jpg files and videos. It won't save a psd file.

@tskipper thanks! Just to be clear... I have a MacBook Air and have set my only iPhoto library on the external. No way can I use the Air for storage. And when I am on 365 upload page I do browse to the view that looks like the finder and click on my new external drive (the partition for storage) but the when I click to open the library to see photos to choose from I cannot... Library icon is frayed out. I am not sure what that last file type even is. Haha. Photoshop? I am not using that. I also cannot seem to find where I can do a "save as" and save edits as a second copy. But I thought iPhoto did that anyway as I read the originals sit in original folder unchanged. I am so confused! Thanks for trying to help!

@espyetta Hi no I don't use iPhoto at all and all my computers are Mac (work and home). I just use Picasa and make copies of photos that I edit. In the end I was frustrated with iPhoto and just find Picasa much easier to work with.

okay, just in case anyone ever stumbles on to this thread and has same question. I read online and seem to have figured it out. If you browse NOT to your external drive in the listing on the left (FINDER) but browse to PHOTOS under Media...then you can see all your photos....so I did post one from there tonight. But I still may use Picassa as it was suggested. iPhoto is scaring me! @tskipper @dibzgreasley

and here is that picture! Filler from last Monday. But I took and posted a "current pic" today as well.

@espyetta That's what I was trying to say in my own bumbling way about finding the pics. Glad you found out how to do it. Good luck
