I am planning to head into Brisbane city on Saturday November 15th to shoot the G20 protests.
I imagine the protests will be peaceful and uneventful but they might bring out a few interesting and colorful characters. At the very least it will be a lot of people who are probably going to be happy to have their photos taken waving signs and things, so it's a good opportunity to practice photography.
My plan is to be at the BrisCAN People's March in time for their 11am kickoff. They are marching from Roma Street to Musgrave Park.
What a great way of getting arrested or having your head smashed with a truncheon by some over enthusiastic cop looking to spill some blood - mine. I guess it would be a great opportunity to get a pic from inside the watch house.
OK I'm in. I'll be wearing a motor cycle helmet.
Sounds like fun! I have a couple of things on that day (and babies to think about) but will see if I can make it work. Would be great to see you all again.
You guys may laugh but I worked for the cops for 9 years and I know what some of them are like. They will be really looking forward to banging a few skulls together.
Oxley Golf club where I play every Monday is next door to the Police Academy and we can hear them practicing. You can hear the enthusiasm and eager anticipation in their yells and drills. :-(
Ok, so the protest I am planning to start at is billed as a "peaceful, family-friendly" event and I'm confident that it will be.
Where they are marching to (Musgrave Park) is the official, approved protest area, so I also expect that to be pretty peaceful.
If there are groups of anarchists or something running around somewhere I kind of assume they will be trying to cause trouble elsewhere such as along vehicle routes or nearer to the exhibition center itself.
Of course I could be wrong and there might be trouble. I will be travelling light (eg no tripod, just camera and backpack) with a bit of food and water and comfortable shoes, and if there is trouble my wife has already made me promise to head in the opposite direction :-)
Yes the police might be keen to apply their training but as long as I'm not standing between them and someone throwing bottles I feel safe being in the area.
So unless a pack of hooded anarchists are on the news the night before smashing windows I'm planning to be there :-)
My biggest worry is the light, to be honest. In the middle of the day it isn't usually very good light to shoot in, at least that has been my experience in the city in the past. I'm up to the challenge though.
I actually replied, unsure why it didnt post - probably forgot to hit the post button!!! Unfortunately I wont be able to make this adventure - but I am looking forward to all of the candid shots from behind bars!!! You might meet some lovely people in there :) Have fun.
The weather forecast looks good so unless the city is on fire that morning I will be there.
For those who weren't on the original email thread my email is paul (at) thecunninghams.id.au and I'll have my phone with me receiving emails. I'm also @paulcunningham on Twitter.
I ended up joining the march all the way to Musgrave Park. The timing was perfect at Tank St there, I got to merge in with basically the front of the pack, which also turned out to be the loudest.
Anyway the march was interesting enough and I probably got a few more shots out of it but that was it for me, exhausted. From the park I headed across to Southbank station and caught the train home.

Well today there was a very civilised protest in the city that apparently had about 100 people so we're off to a good start.
Bring your ID though ;-)

The BrisCAN march starts at the Roma St Forum at 11am. According to Brisbane City Parks info that is located at Emma Miller Place on Roma St. I've marked it with a circle on this map.

I propose meeting back a few hundred meters towards Roma St station where I've marked with a box on the map. Basically opposite the courts building.
I plan to be there about 10:30am.
I'll have bright yellow running shoes on if you don't recognise me otherwise.
