i am continuing to do battle with space issues on my macbook laptop... i need to delete more stuff from my laptop as i am constantly unable to save or work in LR or PS due to lack of space...
i've discovered that in my downloads folder there are several (6? 7?) LR update downloads of over 500MB each... and i am wondering what would happen if i delete these? are these files necessary to run LR? or were they only necessary temporarily, for the purpose of installing the updates?
LR .exe (to run LR) should be in 'programmes' -- a programme instal .exe in downloads is not normally used once a program is installed
I tend to archive the downloads on an external drive for 12 months or more though
@ltodd ah! thank you! maybe i'll just move them to my external for now... i've been so frustrated all week with LR and PS funking out on me due to lack of space... argh...
@frankhymus I know! I move all my LR images to an external drive after editing... So that helps... But sometimes the PS files are huge, and so during editing I run out of room, even tho I only have a dozen or so LR images on the hard drive... Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I still haven't managed to get my computer to recognize the LR shots on the first external drive, one the ones from January on the new external drive... I know the files are still there, and one of these days I'm going to have to knuckle down and get this sorted...
Depending on your workflow and the resolution of your RAW/JPEG file, 5GB may not be enough storage for your scratch disk (where temporary files are stored... often used in history cache). When I do PS work on 21MPix images, various layers and brushing techniques can easily consume 5GB for just temporary storage.
Once installed, the lightroom dmg files are no longer required so you can safely delete them (you can always download it again). You can generally delete anything you download after installing on a MAC at least. Same case really applies to windows user too.
@brownclix yes to trash and duplicate files... as for mailbox attachments... i have assumed they sit in the cloud somewhere? in any event, most are just a few kb at best... simple word docs... but tx for the reminder - i will check on that!
@davidtom 5GB in PS? yikes!!! i don't think i've ever gotten above 500MB, and even that seemed huge!
@northy My solution that's worked well thus far, but may not be what you want to deal with, is to use an external drive to store all photos. I have LR and the catalogue on my laptop, but all imports go onto the external drive. It means I've had to get in the habit of carrying it with me whenever I take my computer somewhere. But even a 2TB drive can be found for under $100.00. It made a huge difference in my fight for space on my laptop. And then, when I backup my computer, I just attach the hard drive and it gets back up with the photos along with my computer drive.
@taffy yup... i've been using an external drive for over a year now... however, when my first external drive filled up, i ran into problems... i have a new external drive, and LR gets confused between the two, and now doesn't recognize photos from the first drive, nor the jan / feb photos on the 2nd drive... not sure what i did wrong, but i'm certain the photos are still there... so one of these days i need to find someone who can help me get this sorted...
@northy I'm in your predicament with multiple drives and LR. I have never been able to figure it out because when I get close to the solution, something diverts me and I forget all the stuff I worked out in my head. When I get funds, I'm going to hire someone to come to my residence and sort everything out properly. It bums me out because I have multiple catalogs now...
