ID the birds with an App

May 7th, 2015
I started watching birds last August and I downloaded a free "Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab of Ornithology" iPhone app to ID the birds I saw at that time. This app is really helpful, especially if you live in the US. You could simply put your geographic location, and information such as colors, size and eating style about the bird you see. Then, the app will give you different potential bird names. After you successfully find the bird name, you could also get more information about that bird. If you are new to birdwatching, perhaps this app could help you. Happy birdwatching and photo shooting :-)

Great tip! This is an awesome app; Cornell is now in the process of adding a "facial recognition" feature to the app so it will become even easier to use. Merlin is available now for Android devices, also.

@dsp2 thanks for letting me know about the face recognition feature! I simply love this app and I use it 1-2 times per week when see a new bird.

I have this one too! Cornell is the site to use and the app is good! I'm so hooked on birds, it's a bit crazy-making for my family. Love learning all about the habitats, similar species, juveniles, breeding habits. So much fun.

Oh, I need that. I'm terrible with birds and flowers, two of my favorite things to photograph. Thanks for the info.
