Any ideas what that circle is around my bee?

June 13th, 2015
I have a thing about bees, so even with the wrong lens on my camera, I had to get a shot of this one -- I don't see many this time of year. When I cropped this, I discovered a halo or bubble or something around the bee. I took the shot in the shade, but I did use my flash -- could that be reflecting off my lens? And if so, why is it only around the bee? Any ideas?

I'm going to be a bit prosaic and ask if it's a smudge on the lens.

Sun flare?

I realised I commented on the image rather than posting my opinion here so excuse me for a bit of copy-paste.
I tend to agree with Linda [who said under the photo it must be a hair or fiber] because that ring doesn't alter the colour of the area inside like a reflection, sunflare or similar effect on the lens would do. Also, there's a single strand of hair clearly visible in a the top center of the image coming down to under one of the legs of the bee and then a bit to the right. I guess a ring is just another one.

@quietpurplehaze A smudge on my new lens?! ;-) No, I don't think so or I would have seen in in all of the shots I took today.

@gailmmeek No, the sun was well out of sight on the other side of the house.

@gazdi I replied in the image comments. It could be a hair -- I'd thought about that, though I'm not sure how a human hair, which is what it looks like it could be, would have gotten there. The other hair you pointed out looks like it came from one of my dogs -- it's much thicker and darker (and the dogs get a lot closer to that bush than my head does!).

@hamora

Yes it would have been in all the shots probably. Just that when I was once asked a similar question on here it did turn out to be a smudge on the lens.

@quietpurplehaze I will check that out in any case because this image is very cropped -- maybe I just didn't notice it in the others!

The bee is coming through from an alternate reality. Very rare capture! ;)

It looks out of focus which leads me to believe it was behind the bee...with all the other fibers in the flower grouping I think it might just be another fiber of some sort just curled around like that!

@hamora

It actually reminds me a bit of a contact lens - but I know I'm just being fanciful!!!!!

@juliedduncan I like that perspective!

@jackies365 I'm not sure which direction "behind the bee" is, but it's definitely closer to the camera than the bee is. I zoomed in on that part of the image on my computer and now I can see the circle of whatever it is (hair?) over the bee's wing.

@quietpurplehaze Now if I had been wearing my contact lenses, I might have started wondering if I'd lost one! Fortunately, I wore my glasses today :-)

The circle is a 'feeler' from the plant for it to anchor to other plants. If you can go back to the plant the 'circle' will probably still be there. Do you know what the plant is called?
June 13th, 2015
@amfrumbiddivurd No idea what this one is called, but I will try and find out. It's already dark outside, but tomorrow, I will try to see if it's still there.
June 13th, 2015
@amfrumbiddivurd Yes, I see these on the vines we have, especially the passion flower vine, which would take over the whole garden if we let it! I haven't noticed them on these smaller bushes, though. I'll take a look tomorrow.
June 13th, 2015
ok. I found out the plant is called Pentas but they dont seem to have vines/creepers/feelers so it could be from another plant
June 13th, 2015
@amfrumbiddivurd Yes, that's what it is! I tried to find the name, but without luck -- good for you! And without much to work with, too! I need to take another look, but I don't think there is a plant near this one that could have feelers. Maybe it's a hair after all!

As mentioned, I see Jesus so auction the photo for sure!

(Like @northy said, I think its a hair, web, or maybe something on the lens.)

@mikegifford And in the Holy Land, no less! It must be worth millions! ;-)
June 14th, 2015
Looks like wing blur, seems to follow the direction the wings would move in. ☺
June 14th, 2015
The mystery is solved. It was, indeed, a strand of human hair. It took me forever to actually find it -- it was almost invisible. Amazing that my camera can see things that my eye can't!

A hair! Disappointing... I liked the idea of a holy bee and a photo worth millions....
June 14th, 2015
i would say its a hair as the halo doesn't complete, its the same colour either side and as it curls around over the top of the bee it lifts up and away from other end

Glad you found it!
