Loss of Quality on Upload

June 23rd, 2015
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has similar issues or maybe knows some tricks how to overcome it: I keep noticing that a lot of the photos I upload lose so much of the sharpness and overall quality compared to the original version. I've tried to upload bigger files, tried to compress first and upload smaller ones, and it does not seem to make a difference. I find it rather disappointing especially considering that this is a photography website and we all look and comment on the photos as they appears on the site. I would be very glad to hear if anyone had similar experience and/or has any suggestions.

Thanks!

I've found that sometimes my photos seem darker when I upload them here. Someone once mentioned that there is an optimum size for loading here ( I think maybe it was 1200 on the longest side) but don't want to swear to that. Hopefully they will see your question and repost with the recommended size.

@gardencat @vera365 For color and tone, make sure you use the sRGB color space if you shoot jpegs in your camera. If you use an editor, make sure you convert to sRGB and adjust if necessary before you upload.

Yes, the maximum size saved here is 1024 pixels on the long side. For storage reasons, and also since this isn't really a photo-storage or ready-to-print site, but rather, as you say internet/PC display, that makes perfect sense. So it is best to take control of the down-sampling yourself. Ross has improved the resizing algorithms, but one size can't fit all. Uploading 24mp images will not help, in fact it usually makes your result look worse than a well judged 1024-long-side image. You can check my albums for the results of this strategy.

If you resize in Photoshop or other good editor, use a bicubic-default or better specifically a bicubic-sharper to make sure your sharpness isn't blurred. Before you convert to jpeg if you shoot raw.

I also check the final product especially for edge-glows that have become too unsightly, and clone them out. It's a pain, yes I know. 365 doesn't have all the support that, for instance, Flickr, does.
