Nikon Coolpix P900

Does anyone have experience of this camera? I'm particularly interested in what it's like for taking macro and action shots. I've looked at reviews and they all seem to talk about the zoom feature.

I have a Coolpix S9700. The zoom is incredible! Macros are mixed. Some are great, but some are blurry. Action shots are a weakness of my camera. I photograph with my husband, and his camera captures action nicely. When we encounter a bird, I zoom in and get the detail, and he waits for it to fly and gets the action. I use this camera because the main place we photograph is on bike rides, and it is not cumbersome.

I got the p600 (for the hubs), the previous version - and it's great! the zoom is awesome and the macro is pretty good for what it is. It's actually an impressive camera - I had wanted to upgrade him for his birthday to the p900 as nikon sent notification of when it would be available - it wasn't yet in the camera shop so he got nikon binocs and opted to stay with the p600. If you get it - I hope you enjoy as much as he has (and myself too)!

I have it and my photos for the last couple of months have been taken with it - the zoom is brilliant and the macro too - take a look at my recent shots or my blogs (linked under some photos) to see plenty of examples.

The P900 had been fantastic so far!

@cejaanderson @elatedpixie @roachling Thank you all so much for your comments, information and for the example photo. The reviews I've read about the P900 comment on the awesome zoom but I wondered if it was equally capable of other things. Looks like it would more than meet my needs for my fairly limited photography skills and I don't do much editing so don't need to be able to shoot in RAW. Now to persuade my hubby how essential it would be to my well-being to have a P900 ;-)
P.S. I enjoyed looking at photos in all your projects to see examples of the shots you take.

Glad to have been of some use. The photo I've just uploaded is an example of one taken hand held, at full zoom on a windy evening!

@roachling Hi Louise. I have another couple of questions for you if you don't mind. Firstly, do you shoot in auto or in manual? Secondly have you tried any night photography or long exposures? Thanks.

No, I don't mind at all. I tend to use the P mode, which I think is semi auto, with some of my own settings. I change the white balance and exposure mostly! The auto mode isn't bad, but my own settings are better. I haven't done a huge amount of night photography but I have taken photos in poor lighting underground. I've not done long exposures really (no tripod) thought I did one on a waterfall for a few secs that worked well. I'll get a few links together for you as examples of low light / night shots and post here in a mo!

Thanks so much for your help and so quickly too! The links are great as it's good to see examples - you take some lovely photos and your blog is really interesting. I really like the idea of the zoom on the P900 but I also like to take a wide variety of photos and have been trying to think which features I most need. Because it's winter in NZ I seem to take quite a lot of night shots at the moment. I've not really tried the P setting as I'm trying to learn how to use my camera in M. Am I right in thinking the P900's highest aperture setting is 6.3 and the lowest is 2.8?
