Lightroom Can't Read Photos

August 7th, 2015
Has anyone ever had LR suddenly stop important photos from the HD card, saying they cannot be read? This has just started -- same card, worked fine yesterday. Photos aren't being ready from either current card or new card. I was able to important into Aperture, export as a new library, and then import that library into LR and it read all the photos. The cards show that the files are there, and my computer (Preview and PS) can import and see the files. All are in RAW. VERY frustrating! This happened once a few days ago and I thought it was because I had reformatted the HD card. All was fine yesterday. Then today...same thing. Once in LR via Aperture, I could edit and use LR as if everything is fine.

Yikes! No.... I hope you get it sorted... Have you tried googling at all? Often a fair bit of insight there...

I just had this happen. I had to create a new import catalog I think. If you just search this topic on the internet you will find instructions I think mine came from lightroom forums. It wasn't difficult but I don't remember the exact steps. I think I had to drag the ircat folder onto the desktop but sorry don't remember exactly!

Taffy. I had this yesterday. Have you checked if your version of Lightroom can import raw from the camera you're using. I was using LR5 and I couldn't import them direct. if i imported them through another program they came up in LR as jpeg. Hope that makes sense. I'm on Creative Cloud so upgraded from there and it now works. I was tearing my hair out yesterday!! Strange thing was i could see the thumbnails in my LR library but when I hit import they couldn't be found. Don't know if this helps. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/camera-raw.html
Hope this makes sense if not let me know.

I haven't had the exact problem, but I find LR will crash if I have my android phone plugged into the PC.

@thistle What's strange is I've been using this exact system, with LR5, since January. Nothing has changed...same camera, new card and old card, same catalogue. The first time it happened -- a few days ago -- I thought the card was corrupted as it loaded the first half of what I'd taken and then said the rest were unreadable. But now it's happened with another card that worked fine with Aperture and the camera is still fine. AGH! It didn't import thumbnails or anything. Just an error message saying the files were not readable. Except.... they are!
Thanks for the response. I'll check with your online link and other forums.

@bill_fe My setup was the same...that's what was so strange and why I thought the card was corrupted. But the card is fine -- I tested it on Aperture on a whim, and was surprised to see if download just fine, export to LR and be imported just fine -- all the same files LR started off by saying were corrupt.

Taffy... Now that I read thru some of the additional info, I'm thinking an issue I'm having is somewhat similar (but not quite the same) . Where LR does not read the card... I have ejected the card and reinserted it, and then it's worked... Now - I think this is only happening w one of my three cards (3 cameras = 3 cards)... So I had been assuming it was the card... But now I wonder if some glitch crept into recent LR update?

@northy Interesting...if you've never had a card problem, I'd be on the alert as that was how mine started. A single card seemed to be the issue, then suddenly no card could be read. I have no time at the moment to sort this out and concentrate on it so am putting it off til the weekend. Will post if I find out how to fix (I'll start with the link above). Now that I know the photos are 'there' I'm not as upset as I was -- it's just a hassle -- but it does mean I'm not downloading new photos til I sort out the problem. Not that I don't have thousands to go through...
