Care and storage of your camera

Where do you guys keep your camera? Is it always in your camera bag? a display shelf? on your kitchen counter? :))

Lately, I've been leaving my camera on top of the dining table almost everyday. If it stays in my camera bag, it becomes a hassle to take it out and sometimes end up missing a shot. It's easy access on top of the table but I worry that it will get dust in the lens or worse, fall off and get damaged due to my carelessness. My dog is scared of the camera so I don't have to worry about that but you never know......

Where do you store your camera?

All my cameras are out on a side credenza by my main office desk. I almost never put them in a carrying bag. That is, unless I've taken one out, come back in and haven't yet been into the office, then it rests on the carpeted stairs leading up.

My cameras are laying about hither and thither... I do have a drawer that I keep my lenses in (when they are not attached to a camera)... But my cameras are wherever I last put them down ;p

Mmm...had to laugh...common question in my house is "Have you seen my camera?" as it is sitting wherever I put it when I came in. Lenses have their own shelf, but they also tend to live here and there depending on what I was using, when I switched it out, etc. Ideally, though, I use a camera bag, a shelf for lenses and lens bags for each lens. Someday I plan to have a system where I always clean my camera after every shoot, check settings, put away lenses, charge batteries, etc.

My camera lives on my desk next to my computer, otherwise it is with me wherever I go. I got into the habit of leaving it in the same place all the time.

Glad I'm not the only one. Lol I thought I was being sloppy with my precious cameras. Thank you for the ideas. I might empty out a drawer or shelf to keep the cameras and lenses in, and use the bags when I travel.

I was lucky enough to pick up a Pelican case from a friend for dirt cheap. That's where I keep my digital stuff and I pick up a cheapie Pelican style case for the analog gear. It gets quite humid here in Perth so I'm trying to keep the fungus out of the lenses etc.

Mine are generally somewhere. I'm never entirely sure where. I do have a back pack for the lenses and pits and pieces but as a general rule...the cameras where I left it. Where that may be...who knows...

I have a case for each of my cameras, and when not in use, they reside in their cases inside a drawer in one of my filing cabinets.

i actually keep at least one of them in the camera bag, for a while all three were in the bag but then i decided it was too much hassle.
It depends on what i plan on doing though, during the summer i go out for walks, so that's one reason i kept them in the bag the last couple months, didn't have to hunt for them before going out for a walk.

This is an interesting thread! I have three cameras, but I only really use one. My point and shoot currently resides in my purse, but I forget about it and wonder why the purse is so heavy. My T5i has become my backup and is in a case with all its accessories in case I decide to sell it. My 6D is on the tripod in my office right now, but it's usual spot is on a bookshelf out of view from the office window. I keep attractive items away from windows. I also have a rule about the lens cap when shooting. It's either in the bag or my pocket.

@soboy5

Mine also do that - in theory - but in reality the one with the long zoom lens sometimes sits ready on the dresser near the window for a bird shot.

@joemuli Hahaha! I actually believe that!
@longexposure Wow! Those cases are cool!

@quietpurplehaze Good idea! I have missed so many bird shots cause my camera's not readily on hand. The slightest noise scares them away.

@frankhymus @northy @taffy @salza @longexposure @graemestevens @soboy5 @zosimasy @joemuli @dmcoile Thank you for sharing. :)) It's so interesting how everybody is different in their own way. I am curious on how the 365 community's consensus is. I wonder if @scrivna can do a poll/vote for us. In it's own bag/case, in the drawer or wherever you set it down first?

@dmcoile For sure about the lens cap! It must always be in my pocket, no exceptions. Anywhere else except that one place, I'll forget for sure and then panic later...

With three kids I have to put my camera in a shelf, when I don't I often find random photos they've taken and freak out that they've picked it up. Lenses used to be in a box but we have a damp house and a couple got mouldy so now they are on a shelf in the open air. And my lens caps are never to be found.....I was weeding my garden the other day and came across one is lost a few years ago!!!

Cameras and some items stay in my camera bags - I'm deathly afraid of dust. The rest of my stuff is in a chest of drawers. I have a table in my office devoted to cameras, bags, photog books, etc. so they're easy to grab when needed. :)

I have a special case I made for my truck, it always stays in my truck!

So many cameras..... so few camera bags. I have a little Olympus point and shoot which is always (and I mean always) about my person. My trusty Canon EOS 650D is always in a bag with 4 lenses ready to go at a moments notice....... I then have about thirty 35mm film cameras and about 50 lenses scattered from end of the house to the other.

Hehehe this was actually discussed in my house over the weekend, I tend to leave my camera on the dining table then lenses, tripods, filters etc get left all over the place so my husband has said he's going to buy me a chest that can stand in my bedroom to put everything in so it's all in one place :)
I also have bags all over the place as well :)

My camera + 24-70 + 70-200 + 85mm prime + 2 x speedlights (and triggers) are always the default of my camera bag. If i need to, i'll swap out the 85mm for a 100mm macro

My Cameras and lenses etc either live in the last camera bag I took them out on a trip in , the lenses stay in padded lens pouches when not in use or on a camera

I have two cameras I use right now. My Powershot XS50 is on my tripod which is stationed at my back window for bird and wildlife shots. When I take it on site for moon shots, it "rides" in a small camera case that it came with. By small I mean it only holds the camera, an extra battery and an extra card (just in case). There's really not room for anything else but I generally operate by the motto "travel light" so I'm fine with the basics. My T3i generally resides on the top of the chest I have in my dining room. It has two lenses- one on the camera and the other in a great big camera bag that I got for free when I purchased the tripod. That holds all my extra filters and other odds and ends too. Needless to say, what I need is what's out so it rarely gets opened!

Whenever I am not using either of my cameras the lens cap is on. I wouldn't know how to clean them the right way at this point so I just take the extra precaution and keep them protected. My extra batteries and chargers are in a drawer where I can easily get them when it's time to change and charge the batteries.

This thread has been fun to read! It's seems there's a common thread though- 365 photographers like to keep their cameras handy.
