Flying for a wedding - packing gear question

August 26th, 2015
I've done weddings before but this time I'm flying and of course will be limited to what I can bring. My camera and lenses will stay with me but in my luggage will they give me a hard time if I have a tripod (smaller version than my normal) a few light stands, monopod, lots of batteries? My biggest challenge for this specific wedding is the ceremony will start at 8:00 (outside) so the lighting will be dim and without my normal equipment it will be a little more of a challenge. I plan to go higher ISO than what I typically would and I have a couple prime lenses that I will bring as well.

So when flying will the airlines give me grief if I pack those things in the suitcase?
What about on the actual flight - my camera backpack and carry on.

@dbj There have been new regulations about batteries that started Aug. 6th. My understanding is a little fuzzy but I believe that they do not want any batteries in checked baggage it is suppose to be in your carry on. Also loose batteries are an issue. I just flew and had batteries in my camera or strapped with rubber bands in my chargers with baggies around the charger. I did not have a problem with TSA at all the way I had things packed. Good luck with new regulations I was afraid I would have a problem. You only need one TSA agent that can make trouble. BTW it is hard to read and understand the new guidelines. There is an article in Outdoor Photographer July 2015 talking about the new guidelines about batteries.

@dbj @morrisphotos I will look up the Outdoor Photography 7/15 issue and appreciate the feedback.

Hey Kathy, in June, I went to Japan and Bali. I put my tripod in the checked luggage, but all cameras, lenses, batteries were in my carry on camera backpack (which even has a very good compact space for my tripod if I wanted to include it). The only issue with some airlines is the size of the carry on and the weight, BUT, I had no problems at all with international flights and I imagine it would not be domestically. I think your plan is good, but the batteries need to be on board and not in checked luggage. (that was the regulation when I flew this summer). let us know how it goes!

Hi Kathy. Like others have said, batteries are the only questionable thing for packed baggage. Lights, tripods, stands should not be an issue in checked baggage. Just travel with your camera and rechargeable flash extra batteries in your camera bag. If you check your flashes, just to be safe, remove any rechargeable batteries. I presume you would never put your camera and lenses in checked baggage. Don't forget all relevant chargers.

Hope the gig goes well for you!

On recent flights, I've been asked to put my camera batteries in my carry-on.
