Ipad and photos

September 9th, 2015
I fear my laptop is about to die, and this is where I store all of my photos. I just inherited an Ipad and would love to have my photos on that. Is that doable? Does anyone else use their Ipad for photos? Thanks! Linda

Hi Linda,
Doable, but... You can use iPad for storing and scrolling photos. What you need for that is to sync your iPad with your library. Well, you still need a computer to do it, at least once. You can do it via iTunes or iCloud.
Then comes "but". The way iOS devices organize the library is terrible. No flexibility, no search and sorting other than date. And important one - transfer from camera to iPad is complicated, you would need extra devices like card adapter or wireless card in the camera, or camera with wireless functions.
Last not least - how big is your iPad in terms of storage memory? I could not believe it but 64Gb on my wife's iPad was used so fast...
Long story short: I would not keep an iPad as the only photo management and storage device.

I also would not recommend using your iPad as your primary form of storage. You may want to try storing them in the cloud via dropbox or google photos although these have some limitations on how much you can actually store for free. The nice thing about the cloud though is that you would have access from any internet connected device. You could also invest in an external hard drive but these can be expensive.
Hope that helps, good luck!

For online storage, try Mega. They give you 50 GB of free storage. I also use Flickr to store my images (some I make public, most I just keep there for me so that I can download them from anywhere). iPad is definitely not ideal -- you will run out of space very quickly, especially if you have things on your iPad apart from photos.

I only use my iPad for 365. Each weekend though I copy my photos onto my laptop and back up on external hard drive.

@roulin @christina_mcm @hamora @andreajoy Thanks all for your advice, this pretty much confirms what I was thinking. I don't know much about online storage, but think I will look into it. Much appreciated!
