I wonder how images with 26 Favs is posted in Top Twenty when a photo I took of a kingfisher with a fish in it's beak that scored 32 Favs doesn't make TT. I just wonder how this is worked out as there are quite a number of images that had less Favs than mine. I'm just interested to know
I too am baffled by the rankings I had an image that had 32 views & 28fav and never got off the trending page while other on the PP has way less views & favs. Thought it was just me so glad you are also wondering
@rosiekind Rosie the same happened to me a few weeks ago when i looked at some of the shots on the TT my image had so many more Favs that I could not work out why? The next week my shot was on the TT. I think it is a matter of timing but who knows how those naughty monkeys work. Maybe your fabulous kingfisher will be there next week - I hope so!!
i note your photo was posted on the 30th; maybe it was that the 32 favs didn't come before his cut off time. pretty sure there's a big chance your photo will make it to next week's TT as you would still be getting more favs for it in the next few days.
I keep my fingers crossed and wish you with all my heart, that coming week you are in the Top Twenty with your fantastic Kingfisher. So I do not have to have the feeling that my picture (one with less favs than yours) did not deserve it. I was for a short little while very excited, that a pic of mine made it in the top twenty for the first time, …
All depends how your current (last month or so) images have been received. It's a relative thing, relative to your own images mostly, as explained in the links above. If you regularly count 50 comments and 30 Favs, it will take way more than that to make the lists. Whereas if you regularly have 10 comments and 2 or 3 Favs, 20 comments and 10 Favs will definitely get you on the PP, and 40/20 will give you a good shot to reach the TT.
On the other hand, there are SO MANY great photographers here and so many great shots that never ever get to any of the pages, as the authors just prefer not to get involved too much with the commenting and following. From that point of view, I always like to take the official "standings" as a rather relative measure. :)
Ross has stated several times that TT is based only on the number of Favs received in the counting period - Wednesday midday one week to Wednesday midday the next. If your images receives Favs in two counting periods, each period is tallied separately so an image that has fewer total Favs than yours but all falling in one counting period, may well be ahead of you in the TT stakes. I always kick myself when I post a strong image on a Tuesday ;-))
I'm not sure if this applies to your photo or not, but this is a reply that I got from Ross when I asked why my photo with 50 fav's never got to TT:
"Your exif doesn't have a taken date, just the date uploaded. The taken date comes from your camera. It looks like you've cleared your exif before uploading so it's not there so you aren't eligible."
@888rachel now that I find interesting Rachel - I don't think exif should have anything to do with it - most of mine have no exif info because I process and it seems to not upload with the image - I have no interest in whether it is there or not so have not bothered to look into fixing the issue.....I personally think the TT is a load of twat as far as top photos go as there are so many awesome ones that do not make it - I pop in to take a look to see if ones I really like and have fav'd made it and to see if I missed any of my friends awesome images
@888rachel@annied@rosiekind It's a shame however I have stopped looking at the TT when nobody seemed to be able to explain how it all worked - and at that stage my photos were getting more FAVs than many on the TT. So I gave up. Then I realised, like Ms Annie, that it was a "load of twat" and haven't looked since last year when I was last on it! Then I saw Rosie's question and I realised that my Cockatoo photo had 39 FAVs - which is far higher (again) than photos on the TT and it also has all the exif info!!!. So I laughed.......and realised that it is still a "load of twat" and still nobody can explain how you get on it - just some dribble about what Ross has or hasn't said! Onwards and upwards.......and I still loved your photo Rosie!
My understanding is that is it all based on mathematics and math makes me want to cry :) I just go with the flow and am pleasantly surprised every time I reach one of the top pages.
Oh Lin, you touch my heart - math makes me want to cry too and I just never found such an eloquent way as you have of expressing it! I always found it such a stupid discipline when you have to turn stuff upside down before you start working with it.... So, algorithms, magic monkeys, whatever, I aim to go with the flow like you.
I also find the TT criteria confusing and unclear. My last image to make TT had no EXIF info, did not make PP and did not have nearly as many favs as other images of mine which made PP and had way more favs but still failed to make TT. However, I've decided that for me, TT, PP and Trending are no longer worth getting upset about. 365 is still the friendliest place on the internet for photographers. Getting an image on Flickr Explore is a much bigger deal than making TT here. This is a very small place compared to Flickr.
I guess you have to weigh the quality of photos with the number of followers. There's not always a correlation. One of my favorite photographers has only a handful of "followers" because she has not actively sought them out. I have wished that others could see her work, but that's not what it's all about for her. It's nice to be recognized, and to have some friendly competition, but sometimes comparing results of others can get in the way of enjoying the process.
@gigiflower Sam your Cockatoo photo is dated outside this weeks TT which goes up to 28th September so, like Rosie, you should see it there next week (dependent of course on what other photos achieve Fav wise during that week :))))
