I have a Manfrotto 3030 (a hundred years old) that ways almost 10 pounds. Crazy heavy. I have been hauling that thing around for years. Well, my almost 50-year-old body no longer wants that weight. I have been reading recommendations here that are all a couple of years old. I am thinking that the brand is probably still pretty fantastic but that a carbon fiber edition is going to be spendy. thoughts?
thanks,

Manfrotto is a well-known name. So are Benro, Giotto, Oben, Gitzo, Induro. Carbon Fiber will be more expensive in general than aluminum, perhaps a tad heavier. "All-in-one" kits (including a head) will usually be easier to deal with than separate legs and head.

Make sure the support system for the camera works equally well and is equally secure in portrait as well as landscape mode. "Pro Video" systems, those designed to optimize "horizontal pan" with video shot "landscape" almost invariably, can sometimes be deficient in this area. "Quick release" systems work well today and are most convenient for me.

Good luck!
