Taking photos of sunsets and sun rises

January 11th, 2016
Since starting this project I have been looking in the direction of the sun much more than usual and I have to say, my eyes feel weird afterwards.
Is it safe to take repeated photos of sunsets or photos in the general direction of the sun? I don't want to damage my eyes. Is there a safe way to do it? Or am I being daft?

You are not being daft at all. If you want to do this, do not, I repeat DO NOT, look directly through a DSLR lens. You are reasonably safe going into LIVE VIEW, or with a mirrorless camera where you are looking at a processed image off the sensor, but even then, slipping and looking directly at an unadorned sun, you are just asking for trouble.

Many would say, just don't do it. Perhaps I should have said that right off the bat.

@frankhymus thanks for your reply. I think we are all taught from a very young age not to look into the sun, so I have been trying not to, but it's difficult when you are taking a photo of a sunset or a sillouette of a boat in the sunset. Using live view is a good idea. I hope the damage isn't already done! It's nice to be spoilt for sunsets, but I do have to be more careful.

I don't look at the sun. I look at the display on the back of my camera.

Can't tell you how many times I've pulled my camera away feeling like I've burnt holes in my retina.... :-)

@shesnapped I know! It's bad isn't it. We all must be more careful.
