Wanting Egg in my Beer

April 8th, 2016
Currently shooting with a Canon SX50. (Gave my daughter my mid-range DSLR. Found that I just wasn't enjoying switching back and forth from my macro to standard to telephoto, etc. For my purposes having a good "grab and go" camera works quite nicely.)
Still, I'd like to upgrade and thought with the following things in mind, some of you might have some suggestions to offer.
Must have: fully articulating view screen. I use this a LOT,
50X optical zoom also a major plus.
Like the Canon platform, but willing to try something else.
Would love to have a faster lens than what the SX50 offers.
Most of my work is outdoors wildlife, birds, gators, etc.
If you have, or have heard of, options that might come closer to my ideal than the SX50 I'd love to hear from you. (I'm selling a bunch of stuff from an earlier and pricey hobby, so I don't anticipate cost being an issue.)
Thanks, Rob
Oh, yes. Video capability is also a must, unless I decide to keep my SX50 for the video and go with something else for the faster lens. Am I edging back toward my old DSLR?? LOL

You intrigued me with the beer.

I haven't heard the "egg in my beer" expression for ages! I leave in a week for Italy and have decided to leave the big bag of equipment behind and just tuck my Sony RX100 into my purse and be done with it. I am going as a tourist to absorb and enjoy everything as much as I can, not as a photographer. I know there will be times I will want to weep for the shots lost, but that's the way it's going to be this trip. I think. That's how I feel TODAY...

I've been pretty happy with my Nikon P610. Had it since July of last year.

A couple of recent shots with it.

Many, many more in my project.

I share your feelings and look forward to finding some useful info from your post, Rob - thank you!

Glad this topic is of interest to more than just myself and I appreciate the input. The RX100 looks like a nice little camera but I really want that high optical zoom. The Nikon P610 looks promising. Maybe I have to decide whether I want a faster lens or higher zoom? Maybe a compromise? I plan on keeping my SX50 but was thinking a faster lens might give me more options with the birds in flight type of shooting?

@rob257 The P610 isn't really any faster than the Canon. 3.3-6.5 on the zoom. Nikon also has the P900. The lens is a bit faster. f2.8-6.5 and an insane 83x optical zoom. But it is bigger which is why I went with the P610. The P900 weighs 900g, the P610 is 565g.

I have just purchased the Nikon Coolpix P900 and am pleased with it so far. It is not all that light as @mcrt says but the range is amazing. The weight is not much different to my dslr with a 55-300 lens but like you I wanted to be able to get a longer reach without carrying spare lenses. Only done one hour up to now but am looking forward to catching some good animal pix whilst not getting too close. One thing I have noticed is the need to compose in camera pretty accurately as the 16 megapix is not so croppable as the 24 megapix of the Nikon3200, good luck in your hunt enjoy!

I'm intrigued by this conversation also. I just broke two bones in my arm while in Italy and my camera and lenses are no longer with me. I will be in this cast for approximately six weeks and then physical therapy so I won't be able to hold up an SLR for quite a while. Has anyone had experience with the Fujifilm X 100 T? I've met several professional photographers in Germany who own an arsenal of lenses for their SLRs but they use this particular camera as their always-have-it-with-me camera. It weighs less than a pound and has one focal length: the equivalent of 35mm. Any thoughts?

By the way, I'm finding the Dragon Dictation software to be very helpful!

I am also looking to replace my Canon SX30IS (I have worn it out) so I am following this thread to help choose my next camera - I also like having an all-in-one camera so I don't have to change lenses when I am just out hiking or biking.

Thanks to all who responded. Since, a. My SX50 is still working fine, and,
b. I'm still not totally conversant with it's many capabilities, I've decided to delve back into the owners manual and various on-line videos to improve my technique with it. When It finally wears out, I'll revisit this whole question of best options. Till then, guess I'll go drop and egg in my beer and enjoy!
