How is your 365 Project going...?

April 11th, 2016
How are things for you?

I’m 100 days in and totally LOVING it! 365 has made me take my camera out with me (almost) everywhere – heck, I even bought a new bag for it! Ooops – and a new lens! And I’ve taken lots of photos that I’m proud of. I’ve been really good about sticking to my personal rules of taking a photo each day, uploading each day and deleting the ones that didn’t make the cut. I’m really hoping that after a year of this it’ll become second nature – and I’ll have a great collection to look back on.

I’ve been involved in a couple of themes (some I’ve enjoyed, some not so much). I’ve had one photo shortlisted in a competition (ah, the honour!). One on the Popular Page. I’ve even signed up for Get Pushed this week. But more importantly - I’m following some great photographers on here and get to see through their photographic eye each day. And I’m really excited by the people who started at about the same time as me – watching them experiment and develop new skills and see things afresh is fabulous fun (you know who you are!).

So - how do you feel your project is going? Where are you at? Is it a struggle right now? Have you got a good balance? Are you happy with your shots? What does the future hold for your 365 Project...?

Rob
Good post. Like you I am new to this year.

I love the idea of the site and project and my camera goes everywhere much to my wife's and work colleagues confusion.

The only little bit of that gets me is seeing what great surroundings so many people on here are lucky to have near by. Chelmsford and Brentwood aren't too exciting but hay I made a commit to start and finish I will.

It's just hard finding good locations in between work and home life lol.

Good for you, enjoy it. Have to say after three years I found I couldn't find the time to comment on all the great shots. So decided to leave it on a back burner. There are some great people on her and I have made several friendships that have helped me enjoy photography even more. Keen to say you get out what you put in and it is your project. So as long as you enjoy it what the hell!!

After 16 months a bit of repetition is creeping in (again today), but I love the discipline of taking a photo every day. And the people are lovely!

I'm also new this year. So far it's going well, although I agree with Rob that it can be a bit difficult to find inspiration every day in the same old less interesting surroundings.
Having said that, I do think my "bad" photos (i.e. the ones on days when I don't have time to go out and find good photos) are getting better.
Definitely glad I decided to try 365!

I'm 3 months into my 2nd year and struggling a bit. The cold spring we're having isn't helping any either. I'm anxious to get out and about for some picture taking.

i started on jan 1 and i am loving it...around the 6 week mark i started stressing about various things but finally relaxed after giving myself a good talking to about what was important to ME and how I'M doing it...i have learned heaps and have been really lucky getting a few TP PP and even TT shots...i don't seek tp or pp but i am pleased that other people like them enough to comment and critique...i have found a wonderful community here...encouraging, caring and funny too...and AWESOME images conceived and created by amazing talent...i'm learning more about editing and how a great picture is created and not just shot (although some of them are sooc)...black and white is still a mystery to me but one day i'll get my head around it...i'd like to comment better on others shots and need to educate myself on how to do that...i'm glad you're enjoying your project also...it's a great place here... :o)

I started Jan 6th (ish) and I also am loving this challenge and learning so much. I have stuck with taking a photo (many actually) per day but sometimes have fallen a day or so behind in posting. My black and white second album is really challenging me to see the world in B&W.
I am experimenting my way through the Nik collection which is new software for me. I have tried several new things here such as street photography and HDR and have more that I plan to try as I get time. Need to improve on composite photos and night shots.
Lots of fun stuff to try and lots of room for improvement,
There is so much on this site to inspire me and to aspire to.
Thanks to everyone who follows me and comments. I know it takes time. Feel free to make suggestions as you wish, my feelings wont get hurt.
Thanks again,Lisa

Thanks for asking! ... I joined this site only 9 days ago, so I'm still very much beginning to learn and discover the ins&outs of it. ( Today, for example, I figured that I must put the @ sign to respond to other users' comments to thank them- dislike feeling ignorant!) For a few years now, I've participated in another online photo community which doesn't permit a lot of post processing on assignments they give, so am finding this site very different, and myself in a bucket of new possibilities, am completely out-of-loop with processing. Participating in a slew of challenges has been very stimulating.

I unfortunately hit my 5 month slump recently and took off a week and a half and am trying to get myself back into the routine. It seems like every time I've done 365, that happens around this time! But I guess I'm just more approaching this as "keep me shooting" than doing a strict photo a day. Still loving the project and the community - I just wish I had more time to spend browsing/commenting/participating like I had at the beginning!

Today is day 365 for me, although I had gaps so actually started 3/25/15. I also did a summer in 2013. I'll be sticking around!

HI, I had my 100 the other day, and I found myself in your post. I am enjoying it a lot. I am taking photos everyday and posting, sometimes I can't find a motive and inspiration , sometimes have too many, but important thing is I am shoting, and learning- there are so many good photographers, and so many beautiful photos, and interesting projects.
I am still trying to find myself, experimenting with things that don't always work, but I guess I'll get there... Comments are very encouraging, so I try myself to comment as much as I can... I love the themes, but didn't enter challenges yet... Anyway, 100 reasons to stay here...

As I had hoped, I'm shooting more often and in more ways than before 365. I've learned by following those who see in ways I don't. An unexpected benefit is when I've nothing to post, I prune my LR folders while looking for something.

Four months into my 4th year. I haven't been attempting to do a photo a day. I am making this a more leisurely year by trying different styles of editing and trying to be more discriminating in what I shoot.

I am on track -- sometimes stretching for a picture but I always seem to find something. The tough part for me is to continue to be creative . . . not just take "another bird" or "another flower" or repeat a concept I have created before, but to continue to challenge myself both in terms of technique AND also in finding creative subject matter. Also trying to focus (no pun) on actual camera technique rather than rely on Photoshop to make the picture "interesting". Always a challenge!!

@tracys ...congratulations on your 365th image...well done!...

I started just before New Year's Day, so I posted 104 yesterday. I take my camera with me all the time, even if sometimes it just my cell phone. I have joined a camera club and between you wonderful people and my local friends, I am slowly learning. Still struggle with technique, but I am making progress. The creative blocks I have run into have forced me to look around and find things I haven't seen before, and that is the most cherished change that being part of this group has made in my life. I love all the images and ideas I get from people I follow, and from browsing the latest uploads. I do my best to comment when I have something helpful or encouraging to say. Looking forward to completing my first 365 and then continuing to take part and meet more an more online friends.

I started on the 1st of Jan and I am really loving it, though sometimes I do feel that I'm neglecting my family as I seem to be preoccupied with photos! On the other hand it has got everyone around me looking for shots for me which is great as it gives us all a common cause. As far as my photography is concerned I do feel that I have improved, especially when I look back at my January photos. I am amazed that I have been able to find a photo everyday, they always seem to turn up!

I just started and am really enjoying the challenge of taking a meaningful photo each day. I got a new camera at Christmas and the date was set to 2014 and I uploaded a couple of photos before I realized that... I changed it to the current date. I just want to share that I did take those photos on the correct days. I like the challenge of going forward each day as that really pushes me to explore different concepts. Everyone is so positive here, and I like the critiques. Now I have to figure out how to join challenges etc. Thanks!

I've been here six years, and they *still* can't get rid of me.
April 14th, 2016
Ha. Well done! I remember posting a 100-compilation. It was also the moment I switched focus from comments and likes to the project itself which is why I still post with joy but without much effort. Sometime, although not recently, I enter a theme or competition but mostly it is about 'the diary'.
Keep going!

Thanks for all your replies - this is the first time I've had time to sit down and reply, but I have been reading your comments.

@johnston1364 Rob - you find some pretty cool things in your lunch break. And it's probably better for your brain to switch off and do something creative even if it is frustrating sometimes!

@christophercox I think a bit of repetition is inevitable. And perhaps it is beneficial to revisit a scene or set up and try something different... life is mostly about familiar sights and for me part of the challenge is to find something different in the everyday mundane...

@maree_sanderson I feel a little lost commenting on other's shots - but I'm trying to jump into the 'latest' photos and find some new people and different photos to look at. I'm never sure what it is about a photo that makes it 'not' work well - if I am unhappy with my photo I know it isn't right, but I'm not always sure *why*!

@lisainstpete it's funny - I find that your b&w photos speak to me much more than your colour shots. Maybe I just don't understand colour! Yeah, lots and lots to learn that's for sure.

@romeheather - I've found the challenges and themes great for direction and inspiration too. It's so interesting to see how other people interpret something in a completely different way. You are on 10+ photos now - so consider yourself an old-time ;)

@emrob I did a bit of a 365 about 4 years ago. And as soon as I got behind I felt it was unmanageable and I gave up. I really wish I'd stayed with it now - gaps or no gaps.

@tracys congrats on getting to 365!!!

@jodies yes - I have ym children look for things for me - keeps them involved if I need them to hold back and not race away while I take photos of something (my almost 4 year old keeps saying to me 'but they it is grey?' when I do a b&w photo - he's very frustrated by the lack of colour!).

@stefneyhart - ha ha - I love your errant photos! I'm sure you can change the date when you upload...? Anyway - don't let it both you too much. You are going to have a fine collection of photos to look back on very soon.

I cant believe I am 168 days in - probably more because there was a couple of weeks when I was completely out of it due to a bereavement and if felt right to leave those spaces blank. I have really been enjoying taking the camera everywhere and using it in ways that I would not have thought of before - just because I know I am looking for a decent shot every day. I worry that I am going to run out of material though, and sometimes, when I see the skill and expertise and beauty of everyone elses photography, I feel just a little down hearted. I joined because I wanted to improve, and I think I have a bit, and over time, if I stick at it, I am sure that I will continue to do so.

Thanks for asking the questions - enjoy your next 100 days and beyond.

What an encouraging discussion! I joined in early January and so far have only missed a day. Initially it was just to make a photo record of the year but it has become more than that. Now I'm always looking around and seeing potential photos! It's a little frustrating because at this stage I'm still just taking the photos and doing very, very basic editing realising how much there is to learn. Every photo I post means something to me though and will bring back a memory of some sort. My reward at the end is to buy an actual camera (rather than my phone or tablet), then I'll do another year!
