New to Critique - Plus & Minus weekly theme

May 12th, 2016
Each week there will be a specific theme.

I am encouraging as many people as possible to post a photo (expecting constructive feedback both positive (plus) and an area of improvement (minus) .

Each person that comments on a photo must provide what they like about the photo and what they feel can be improved. No generic comments.
This short week's theme is architecture.

Not only can we learn and improve our skills but sometimes we don't know how or are afraid to offer feedback since we don't want to "hurt anyone's feelings". But if we want to learn (and a large majority of people say they do) this feedback is important. Getting the suggestions of improvement sure helped me.

Here is the thread:

Kathy, In looking at the comments, it seems some people have different editing styles (do you keep the light pole or wire in or do you take it out). I think in my photo for this I am going to list what I shot with, what I edited with, and possibly my editing style.

I think that may help with the comments, or I could be completely wrong.

Great idea! Lots of people on here looking for critique (me included).

@phillyphotos I agree it will often be an editing style or even personal preference, however it could also open one's eyes of how that editing style is even perceived by others. I have gone though many editing styles and phases but as I look back some of my personal styles and fads kept me from reaching the next level. The important thing to keep in mind that people will have different opinions but compare what someone is saying to what if that shot would have been in a magizine? Sometimes someone is in a fad that really isn't helping them and it takes someone with the courage to say something. What quality level do we want? When I look at the majority of profiles on this site the statement is "I want to grow and learn as a photographer" but to really do that we need to be bold enough to face constructive critique even if it hurts our feelings just a bit.
And just because someone gives a suggestion doesn't make that suggestion right either.

the thread gets a little mixed up once a few people have submitted and commented on a few, it is fascinating to read but i wonder if for the thread you might want to do it like the pick a fav ones, where you comment on the previous person's photo only and then submit your own,
Then if anyone wants to add to the comments of the other photos go to the photo itself. just a suggestion.
very cool idea though, and i like that it is themed.

there could also be a tag so people can go to all the relevant photos and do as much commenting, reading and viewing as they wish

@kali66 I agree that it does get mixed but I would like to see the opportunity for more than one person to comment on a photo since that could be added value for the photographer. Also keeping the critieuqes in the same thread could help others to learn and read them. I am going to give this some more thought if there is another way of doing this where it is possible to have multiple comments. I'm toying with the idea of leaving the posting up for 3 days no comments then open it up for the comments and no postings the rest of the week. I will give it some more thought. .

I agree I think for future weeks we will need to have people tag them as well.

This is a great idea. I don't take many photos of buildings, but I will keep an eye out for future weekly themes :-)

Perhaps the discussion would seem less mixed up if photo posters gave a short title describing the major elements. For example 'hdr skyline', '2 story house & trees', 'B&W 2 towers'. Obviously, critiquers should start their post using that title.
