Focus locked on subject, but shutter doesn't always release

Hi all,
I have a Sony Alpha 65 that has taken thousands and thousands of photos in the last 4.5 years. It's worked great, until recently. Sometimes, not all the time, when I press the shutter half way and it locks on the target (the green box tells me this, as does the sound), I press the shutter release fully to take the picture, the shutter will not release; it won't take the picture. It acts as if it is not locked on target and not ready to fire. If I let go of the shutter release and try again, it often will lock up again like this. Sometimes I have to press it several times to get it to finally take the picture. I would have changed nothing during that time; it just finally decides to take the picture. This is very frustrating! Especially when something is happening NOW and I want that particular moment's shot, and then it passes because the camera wouldn't fire.
It's not an issue of low light because otherwise it would not have locked on and told me it was ready to go; it does this is ideal conditions. It's not an issue of waiting for it to write to the memory card because no previous photo was taken immediately before this happening (and besides, it can handle about 10 rapid fire photos before lagging in taking a photo due to writing to the memory card).
Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Could be anything. Try setting it to factory settings if there is such a feature. I wouldn't hold my breath, but it can't hurt to try it. Cameras aren't made to be user serviceable. So you might try sending it in to Sony or start looking for a new camera. I suspect it's a hardware issue if resetting it doesn't solve the problem.

@kali66 this is what I fear, on the one hand; but on the other, good excuse to go camera shopping?? I have cycled thru the 9,999 picture counter on it twice now... You'd think I'd be a better photographer by now! 😂
