wish list...

August 5th, 2016
having just gifted myself with the Olympus EM5 Mark ii, i am wondering what should be on my wish list in terms of accessories?

i have a decent 12-40mm lens, as well as a cheap but adequate zoom... i also have a circular polarizer and an ND filter for the good lens...

so - what else would be worth investing in? i think i wouldn't mind a macro lens or possibly a fish eye lens (for fun)... suggestions? what would you want?

I have the EM-10 and would strongly recommend the 9mm bodycap accessory. Only €90 and loads of fun. I have used the tag '9mmbodycap' If you want to look at some examples I posted. Here's one example http://365project.org/laroque/365/2016-03-18

A large prime lens.

the 60mm macro is gorgeous and i also like very much my 45mm 'portrait' lens. my husband has the 25mm (nifty fifty equivalent) which he really likes. the one i use least is the 17mm wide angle but i think that's just me. my nephew, a talented amateur photographer shooting with an em5, loves his 12mm f2 - not tried it myself but would like to give it a go. look forward to hearing what you end up with! enjoy the journey :)

Curious -- what led you to the 4:3 mirrorless? I've been reading reviews going back and forth between this and Sony with full frame options.

@taffy well... partly i'm a bit of a gear-ho... ;p but mostly, i need something light for photo-walks... i bought the sony nex7 (mirrorless crop sensor) for this purpose a few years ago, and have never been in love with it... it has limited lens options, and the i've never really gotten the user-interface to work for me...

so i decided to treat myself to something new... after some research i ended up with the em5... it's light and it's enviro-sealed... lots of good lens options with the micro 4/3 mount, plus i find the controls more conducive to some of the kinds of things i like to do when i'm out and about... for example, i never really liked the results of long exposure shots with the sony, but with the em5, they've been coming up quite nicely...

i did look at the sony A6300 (i think that was it) which is also enviro sealed and would have had the benefit of working with my existing good sony lens... and i think it was comparable in terms of weight... but decided that with all my complaining about the sony, i really needed to try something different...

anyway - LOTS of folks love the sony... known for really good quality sensor resulting in excellent images... and no user interface in digital cameras is easy anymore, so you really shouldn't go by me :)

@northy Thanks! I think I'm going to rent this for a week with a few lenses, just to see. After all the reviews I've read, it's clearly a great camera -- and it all seems to come down to handling and personal preference. Just not certain if I want to give up full-frame. I assume you can still process RAW files in LR with this?

@taffy. Yup - it lets you shoot RAW...

@northy Just rented the a6300 for a week starting the 24th. Kept going back and forth and finally just decided to try both.

@taffy cool! i'll be curious to hear your thoughts once you've tried both...

I have the original EM5 and too many lenses. At home I usually carry some combination of O(lympus)9-18, the O12-40 f2.8, P(anasonic)20 - my 'normal' lens, O45 and O40-150. The long zoom is adequate, but I've been spoiled the the image quality and speed of the others (excluding the O9-18). I'm considering the P35-100 F2.8 as a replacement.

Have you discovered http://www.43rumors.com/ ?

I love using the Holga plastic lens on my EM5 - great fun & very cheap!
(the Holga Pinhole is more tricky to get a decent image with - I need much more practice!)
