Is 365 just for photos?

September 9th, 2016
Hi everyone! I am a new 365er as of a month ago and am appreciating the academic community to learn and share. I fell in love with this platform since it seems to rise above other sharing modalities; and is in my opinion incomparable to others since it seems to be all about photography. For photo lovers by photo lovers!

I am now seeing prose and poetry being posted however and I was surprised by that. These looked to be pdfs or screenshots uploaded from a computer, not even a DOF shot from a journal which would be awesome by the way and align with the vibe of what I have seen.

Would some of you comment on what the community feels belongs here or not? This was just my impression of 365 that it was all about the Photography. I would be turned off if this became like Instagram.

Sincerest thanks and accolades for this awesome space to grow! It has been incredible thus far...

Welcome to 365. I hope you're enjoying your project.
I think this 365 site is predominately for visual mediums (I've posted drawings in the past), but it wouldn't bother me if someone wants to post their poetry or such-like. We're all responsible for curating our own experiences on here, much like the rest of the internet, and if you don't like what a user is posting, there's no obligation to follow them.
I'd be much more bothered by stuff being banned.

I occasionally post a poem but always as text accompanying an associated or related image.

Everybody's journal is their own to do with as they please. I wouldn't want to impose my rules on someone else's journal or have them try to impose their rules on mine.

Just don't follow the people who don't interest you...... Simple really :)

I think a couple people uploading screenshots is a far cry from 365 turning into Instagram. I don't think there's anything to worry about with that specifically. The 365 format doesn't have what people like about Instagram. Both places attract entirely different audiences, even though obviously some people can enjoy both.

There are 365 projects (not necessarily communities/websites) for every type of art out there. Drawing, writing, sculpting, jewelry making, sewing, painting... the list goes on and on! Even more people do similar projects, like monthly themes and weekly creations. The concept of a 365 or similar project (as not everyone does a traditional 365; we all have our own interpretation and "rules" for ourselves) isn't unique to photographers, or even to this site. I don't think its surprising that other artists have found their way here or members feel like experimenting.

Personally, I like seeing the interesting way different people interpret 365. I came here for photography but I've found a lot more. I love the snapshots that give a glimpse into someone's life as much as the works of art I wouldn't be surprised to see in a gallery.

With my own project I always post photos but sometimes the "main event" is what I wrote about it. About my day, a memory, a story. So I can understand why sometimes a piece of writing, or something else, better fits the day.

For me, the only time it would cross the line and I'd report people is if memes taken from the internet started being posted. (Not memes with photos and text by the uploader.) Those photos are usually stolen from an initial source so I think it would be inappropriate for them to be on 365. But I don't think we have anything to worry about in that regard.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I truly wanted to know the group norms since I could not find anything about it ...I appreciate the clarification.

I've only seen a couple of people who post poetry on 365, but it's some of my absolute favourite stuff I've seen here! (Check out the blackout-poetry tags ;) )

I do post my artworks(painting, doodles or sketches )occasionally--i believe 365 is a great platform not only for photography but all 'bout art.
--I'm a die hard fan of Instagram....Instagram isn't all bout food & selfies- if you follow the right people, there's so many many great places, talented artist, musicians, fashion designers, poets, galleries, museums & super awesome photographers...etc..to see & get inspired creatively:)

Just for the sake of mentioning, I don't completely dislike Instagram :)

I follow many pro photographers there, namely the NatGeo folks...
It is not a good comparison I guess, since this is a very different space and does attract different artists...and anything that provokes peoples' appreciation for life is a gift- plain and simple!

I love the community discussion forums here and the opportunity for accountability to our art with contests to participate in. It is a refreshing space to be in. I am an art school graduate and now public school art teacher so spending time in an environment with these offerings is refreshing to continue personal growth that helps me professionally.

I mainly wanted clarification since there is a vein in which most folks are working here but not a lot of information for the newbies describing what the essence or mission of the community is...Maybe I didn't see it if it is posted?

@humphreyhippo @swillinbillyflynn @claycameras ... You have been very helpful and I appreciate the time it took to respond! Thank you everyone for chiming in... The openness and dedication to our own individual craft is really thrilling. I have not missed a day so far!

My first year on 365 was really a photo blog and was essentially a photo took that day. Sometimes they were artistic and good sometimes they were a record shot of the day. Over the years my 365 has morphed from a blog to almost a showcase of my photography. I don't do a photo every day now but when I post it tends to be from that day ( give or take a few days) and a half decent picture. I have set myself challenges to push my photography moving into genres I never felt comfy with ...50 mono portraits at 50mm ...and 100 strangers
