Where should we go?

September 18th, 2016
Next May/June is my 50th birthday and our 30th wedding anniversary so I'd like to take hubby away for a break. Obviously I'd like to go somewhere where I can take a lot of photos. Neither of us is into beach holidays or sitting around doing nothing so anywhere that has interesting architecture, museums and sights is our thing. I'd love some suggestions and perhaps you could post a photo to the thread of that place to give me some ideas.

Might I suggest Lyon, my favourite French city. Located where two major rivers meet, it has lots of promenades, bridges and summer boat trips. Vieux Lyon, the old city. is an atmospheric Renaissance district, but there are also Roman ruins, including an amphitheatre, lots of 17th and 18th Century buildings and squares, a cathedral with a one quarter size Eiffel Tower nearby, and two funiculars. It is often called the gastronimic capital of France, ao you won't go hungry. It has its own distinctive, and very photogenic, restaurants called 'bouchons' and celebrity chef Paul Bocuse has several restaurants there, as well as a market hall selling gastronomic produce. It is easy to travel around on the metro and tram system, and easy to get there from the UK by Easyjet or even rail. I haven't been since 2010 and have no photos, but here are links to those on this site with the tag 'lyon', and those on the 500px site.

Depending on how far you want to travel but I would say a visit to South Africa could be worthwhile. There's some beautiful architecture although not nearly as old as some you can see in Europe. Of course we also have a large number of game parks, either state run or privately owned. The private parks are more expensive and usually not self drive. Of course I am biased towards the beautiful country that I live in :-)

Where are you living and how far do you want to go?:) Just travelling back from Japan and its been incredible, especially Kyoto and Hakone, also I havent been there myself but hear soo many amazing things about Budapest. My friend went to Argentina last year and got some amazing photos of waterfalls and landscapes (and food!) If walking or hiking and landscape photog is your thing, theres lists out there of the most beautiful walks in the world (New Zealand, Italy and the UK all have a path in the top 5 i think!)

Dubrovnik, Croatia? here are two shots... i have more in my project and infinitely more on my computer somewhere... i think this is where the Game of Thrones was shot, if that helps you place the location... it is an old walled city... the view from the wall (not sure why i never posted a view from the wall) is amazing... lots of nooks and crannies to check out all over... i think there is beach - at any rate, there is dining overlooking the ocean... it's quite a spectacular sight... it does get a bit crowded during the day... but i got up at dawn one morning and had a wonderful time doing a walkabout on my own...

How about Barcelona? We went this last January for 4 days and found more than enough to do - lots of culture, good shopping, a huge market, bus tours......
