Running out of space...

For those that shoot with high MP cameras... Do you use an external hard drive? Save online or just get really get good at deleting what you don't like? I shoot RAW and my computer is quickly filling up from this project and I haven't been doing it that long... Just recently went full frame so it is just going to fill up quicker...

I use about three external hard drives.

I use a bunch of external hard drives. I probably have 15TB worth of drives. To keep drive costs down, I use bare 3.5inch drives and hard drive docking station.

I also have one drive that just has duplicates of my favorite stuff that I keep at a different location. If you get robbed or have a house fire, you don't want to lose everything you have.

I have a 4TB second disc which is just for Lightroom and photographs and an external drive for weekly back-ups. I do go through shots every time I import new ones and delete all the junk.

I too have several external hard drives, plus a NAS mini-server with about 8TB storage space. And I'm really good in deleting, fixed point in my agenda! Don't forget to back-up your stuff (and the space this needs). And like Josh @sudweeks said, keep your favorite pictures somewhere else. We have those (wedding pictures, travels) on a drive in the bank safe. Never say "one day I gonna back-up my favorites", start imediately and do it on regular basis.

@jessiolsenphotography I recently upgraded my pc it has a 1TB drive from my original PC plus a spare 2TB drive I also back up to my Amazon drive which is also my import folder. I do however go through photos when I first up load them and delete the rubbish so it doesn't get backed up.

Like others, I use a 4TB portable drive (WD Passport, but there are several reliable ones) for LR photos (and am in the process of merging 5 other small drives' worth of images to this single 4TB one), and then use an 8TB backup G-Drive that does not 'travel.'

i must get better at deleting! good housekeeping, but an external is what you need.

I have a few external hard drives - I am terrible at deleting...

I tend to keep the best shots on my hard drive.... i.e. the ones I am going to use, post online, sell etc. I only keep the finished version post processing.

Everything else including the original unprocessed versions goes out to external drives.

Don't forget to take plenty of backups of everything, to more than one external drive. If you drop one, it may well be the end of it. :)

External attachable and detachable USB drives are essential I believe, as do all the people who responded here. If you use Lightroom or other similar advanced library tool, make sure you know how to deal with drives that might not be currently attached. And backups if you backup/remove to more than one place. It stumps a significant number of people.

@frankhymus I already feel like I don't know what I'm doing haha - I hate to say I have never backed up my stuff :s

I have 29 Tb in 5 external drives. I suggest you pick up a copy of Scott Kelby's Lightroom book. He explains in a humorous way how to manage you images. I don't follow it exactly because I shoot every day so I have my folders by date.
I do a backup every other day to a sixth external drive I keep out of my home when I'm not backing up.

The price of his book has come way down from when I purchased mine.

I have automated my backups to run in the middle of the night. My full Lightroom catalog and backups are on three drives. I only keep my .jpg images on my 1Tb internal drive, the RAW images and the .DNG images are on external (much larger) drives.

@bill_fe hmm I might still have Scott Kelby's Photoshop book from back when I was in school so maybe I should check if it has it-- otherwise I'm sure I can find a YouTube video on it somewhere- the co sensuous is that I need to get an external drive as nobody uses online cloud or such

Definitely save them on an external hard drive.

Jessi, I use online (Amazon Drive and Google) as my 'house burgled/fired/every single hard drive I have stops working' last resort, but my final back up drive lives in my car!
