5 observations on 365

May 13th, 2017

I've been a part of this lovely 365 Community since January 2012. Five years plus, during which I've achieved 400% of photos, that's almost 80 per cent. Time to move on, I think. But, before I go, a few observations about my experience of 365:

1 Women are much more likely to comment.
2 It's irritating that you can't remove your followers after they cease posting.
3 Too many of the comments are mere platitudes. Maybe it would be better to save one's time making less, but more meaningful comments.
4 When I entered competitions, I really noticed an improvement in my creativity and commitment.
5 But by far the best is the opportunity to connect with people from all cultures, all ages, with the common love of looking at the world through a photographer's eye.

Hi, I've been here a year and a month

1- true, but what is the gender ratio of 365ers I wonder??
2- But they might come back?
3-Oh dear, are my short comments seen as platitudes? I hope not!
4-Definitely agree- I also photograph things I may not have noticed and I'm braver now too!
5-I have learnt so much here in a year about other cities, countries and 365ers are so generous with their advice and tuition too

I've been here just over 3 years...

1. I am, at least the last time I looked, a man...and I always try, depending on time, to comment and certainly on my shots reply to everyone individually.
2. Doesn't bother me in the least...
3. I have noticed that if you ask for CC you will get it, but "mere platitudes", if we must call them that, are at least showing that people are watching and appreciating the effort that each of us puts in to our shots...sometimes time is short (all to often of late) and a simple, short comment is enough to show that appreciation.
4. Absolutely - this has been the best way to learn and develop an individual style
5. Good lord yes...it is a community, a very real one, with none of the negativity, nastiness and pettiness so often associated with other online sharing platforms...

Enjoy what ever new challenges come your way :)

So sorry to see you go but so glad to know that you seem to have had a positive experience throughout the majority of your project.

1 - As for commenting, I go in fits and starts. I feel guilty when I do not have time to comment on everyone's wonderful photos but then, there are only so many hours in a day. I have a hard enough time posting when I get really busy, let alone commenting!
2 - I am glad I can't remove followers since I do have some pop in once in a while and I would have missed them if they were off my list. But, that is me, and I know how you feel.
3 - I appreciate all comments - even the short ones that may seem like platitudes. It is so depressing to open 365 to an empty notification box. These comments tell me there are people out there who care.
4 - I agree about the challenges. I enter as many as I can, time allowing. Get pushed is my favourite since you are paired with a partner who usually follows you throughout your project.
5 - I too like the international flavour of this site.

Ive been here for nearly 7 years.

1. I think there are more women than men on the site but I must agree that the women who follow me comment a lot more than the men who follow me.
2. Doesn't bother me at all
3. Oops, most of my comments are "mere platitudes" but I'm time short and like to appreciate as many photos of others that I can. I appreciate every comment I get no matter how long or short it is.
4. I rarely enter challenges as I'm not on the same level as those that do enter, but I do follow them and vote for my favourites.
5. I too love the connection with people all over the world

A
I've been here for nearly a year and a half now

1- I'd noticed that too, I'm part of a few other photography clubs (online and in person) which are all predominantly male so it's sometimes nice to see a more female environment :)
2- Some people will take a break for a while then come back and post/ comment again. Otherwise, it's not as if someone no longer posting is a nuisance in any way so it doesn't bother me
3- I appreciate all the comments I receive but agree that sometimes it would be more useful to get good critique
4- Absolutely! And it's interesting to compare and contrast yourself to how others have responded to challenges and take inspiration from that
5- That's the best bit of the site! I think I follow people from every continent and have seen so much more of the world through the eyes (and lens!!) of others

I've been here around 18 months.
1. Could be right but as I have more female followers than male it's difficult to judge...
2. Can't say I worry too much about that I usually follow back if they don't post for a while sometimes I unfollow but as has been said people do come back.
3.The main thing I like about the site is that people comment and engage more than on sites such as Flickr that I'm also a member of. I do how ever find it difficult to comment as much as I would like juggling work life and photo's I'm left with about 30 mins spare which often ends up with me falling asleep on the sofa instead of commenting!
4. Competitions are great and really help develop my skills plus it's great if you struggling for inspiration :)
5. Yes the international feel is great and I've met people who live on the opposite side of the world but also know the area I am from.

I doubt I will ever leave this site as it always brightens my day even when life is challenging which for me is most of the time!

I am in year 7 and love being a part of this community just as much (if not more than) when I started.

1) I don't pay attention to gender here (nor anywhere else for that matter- it's too overblown)
2) I've never noticed that and it doesn't bother me
3) If you ask for a critique, you will get a critique. Time is precious. Not everyone feels like writing a 5 paragraph artistic review of each one of your photos, and most folks don't feel as if they have the credentials to do that either. I don't mind the short and sweet comments. It means someone took the time to look at my picture, and I truly appreciate that.
4) I pick and choose my challenges and even host one in February. They definitely step up your game.
5) I love the international flavor of 365 and have learned so much about the world I live in from my friends here. That's one of the reasons I stick around!

Best wishes to you on wherever your photography takes you next!

I've been here just over a year and I've really enjoyed it. Well done on keeping posting for so long.

1) You're probably right, but I hadn't particularly noticed. As others have said, there do seem to be more females here so that's maybe why.
2) I don't mind that - either for the people I follow or my followers. Sometimes it's nice to see a name crop up that you haven't seen for a while.
3) I've been given very helpful CC when I've specifically asked. I appreciate any comment people leave. I'm not worried about whether my shots are on the PP or not, but it's nice when someone gives you some feedback.
4) I agree that competitions help stretch you and can give inspiration. I'm always missing the deadlines, but I do think they've improved my photography.
5) It's great! I've seen so many different places around the world and interacted with loads of different people. It really does feel like a community with a lovely positive vibe.

@julieco @kjarn @clearday i'm only going to comment on the first point: Ross said several years ago that 80% of 365ers were women. My personal observation would be that that figure is now nearer to 90%

@vignouse That's interesting, thanks for the info. I wonder why it's so skewed in that direction. I can't imagine that so many more women than men are interested in photography so maybe it's about the format/project aspect

I've been on the site for a year and a bit now and have really enjoyed the experience, positive outlook of the site and how it has improved my photography

1 Not paid much attention to the gender of my commenters but from the looks of the above not surprising given the distribution of users.
2 I'm happy for the followers to stay followers - people come and go and come back again. However I do think it would be good if the 'followers' number was "Active followers" as someone who has been on the site along time might look like they have 1000's of followers but only a few that are still actually commenting. Active could be determined by any comment within the last 3 month say, as I know some people who don't post photos but carry on commenting.
3 Happy to have any comment. First line of my profile "Constructive criticism welcomed" and very happy to receive it. Whenever I have asked for opinions on a specific shot people have been very forthcoming. Myself I will offer CC to people who have asked for it, those who I have been commenting on for a while & gleaned that they will be ok with it & my partners in get-pushed challenges. Do tend to hold back on those who are only just starting out on their project unless they have asked for CC specifically
4 Yes the competitions are great. For me get-pushed is always on the list - even if I have a few yet to complete I do get to them in the end. I like that you make a specific connection to another photographer.
5 Yes it is fabulous having a worldwide 365 family.
