Amazon Prime Photos/Amazon Drive

June 6th, 2017
I have tried to upload my excess photos to Amazon Drive. Since I am a Prime member, I get unlimited photo storage on Prime Photos. I am not sure if these two things are separate. I moved a number of folders from My Pictures on my hard drive to the Amazon Drive. They are all there in Amazon. But my hard drive got more full in this procedure. Makes no sense. Can I delete the photos from the Amazon Drive place on my hard drive? None of this is making sense to me. I upload folders but there are no folders in Prime Photos. It seems like I am not doing this properly. If you use it, let me know!

Hi Danette, in Amazon Drive, click All Files option and you should see the folders. I have just asked the resident Amazon Drive expert who is doing mine for me at the mo..... he was trying to explain to me the way to keep the photos on Amazon but not the PC..... and it is possible - something to do with Preferences.... so don't give up and I will try to get a better understanding and get back to you, if you don't get the info from someone else!

@pixiemac I thank you so much for your first response and I look forward to your follow up. I do see the folders that uploaded this last time. I learned I had to set them up first before uploading, apparently.

I use Amazon Prime storage as my back-up for photos. I may be wrong but I believe I pay extra for more than basic storage room. I really like it when I am using my iPad for downloading photos while on a trip. There is a Prime Photos app. It automatically saves everything to the Prime cloud so I can delete the images from the iPad and/or card if I choose. It also asks me every morning if I want to see pictures from that date in previous years. That is a fun walk down Memory Lane.

@allie912 If you are a prime subscriber, the photos are free. Otherwise, there is a nominal fee. I saw about the app. Certainly a good idea. For now, I was just uploading "expendable" photos that take up so much space for me. I have my hard drive automatically backed up daily.

@danette I have it and it's driving me up the wall at the moment! To get round your issue I started to import my shots directly into the amazon drive this worked well until it signed itself out one day. When I signed back in it then decided I had to identify the folder again once I had done that it then decided it wanted to sync all 14000 photos! This seemed to be a very slow process taking several days and not getting anywhere. So my next idea was to remove the photos from the drive folder that I new were backed up fortunately I copied these to another area of the hard drive as the next time Iogged in it informed me it had deleted them from my cloud drive as well! Now it gives you the option to restore them on the amazon drive but as soon as you do if there not present in your pc folder it just deletes them again. I've had enough now and will probably just by a portable drive instead as it just doesn't seem wort the hassle.

I don't have Amazon, but I assume it works in a similar way to the Google space or other types of cloud storage. They can get very confusing depending on whether you are just copying or "syncing." The first way to use cloud storage is to just have it "there" and copy things from your computer--"here"---to "there" when you want. You choose what to copy and whether to keep things in both places or just one. On Amazon, that may require purchasing additional storage space. The second way to use cloud storage is to "sync" (synchronize) one set of files in two (or more) places. You usually set up a designated folder on your computer and everything that it in that folder is automatically copied to the cloud folder. If you delete something from here, it's deleted from there. If you add or delete to "there", it is automatically added or deleted from "here" as well.

Like I said, I don't use Amazon...so I cannot speak to the details. But since there are special rules for photos, it apparently copies them differently than the normal back-up space.

Syncing can be wonderful, but when it goes awry it's a real pain. So my only recommendation is to go slowly and make sure you really understand how the spaces are all linked before you commit your important photos to any cloud storage. Maybe take some time to do some testing with a small set of files? e.g., What happens when I move from A to B... Does it copy? move? duplicate? delete? What happens at sign in/sign out. Read up on what happens when you need to switch computers. Then you'll feel more comfortable and able to use your resources without fear.
