Posting on here - Picture Quality V Subject Interest

November 16th, 2017
I just wonder how members make their decisions on which photographs to post on here. Is it the overall quality and technical correctness of the photograph or is it the interest which the photographs will generate.

I suspect both. It will be interesting to see how members document their decision process.

Interesting question! In a perfect world I would post a perfectly technical capture of a shot that had great interest. But life is rarely perfect. For me interest outways perfection! Give me a great street shot full of grain and some blur, but captures a moment in time that gives me emotion!

@lumpiniman Such an interesting question and I suspect there will be a variety of responses! I think it's hard for me to separate the quality of an image from the idea of whether or not others might find it interesting. Primarily I think in terms of what I want to practice or accomplish in creating the photo and then posting the ones I am happiest with. But there are also times when the emotional impact of an event takes precedent and then I'm more likely to want to post a document shot even if I have others available of better quality. In the end, I think what 365 has taught me is the habits of photography -- seeing life on a day to day basis in terms of images that have the potential to be worth preserving and sharing. It isn't always about technical quality, but it's about using those learned skills as effectively as I can to create the image that I feel worthy of posting. When others respond well, it's icing on the cake. The cake may taste just fine without it, but it's always a treat when you can have both!

I have been asking myself that question for a long time now! Which photo is worth posting. As I am a novice and still trying to get it right, it is important to me that the shot looks good. There are some shots that I am not happy with e.g. when the lighting is wrong, shooting against the sun, wrong iso etc. I still post them as they are something special to me. I am over the moon when some turn out good enough to make the TP or PP. I would appreciate some tips of how to improve though. Non of my friends take photo's, so I have nobody to ask :-(

hmmmm ... interesting ... since getting into photoshop and lightroom thanks to hearing all about them on 365, i only post a photo that has had at least a basic edit, and my watermark added. normally i would also want it to be of reasonable quality! having said that, i also love to use my 365 postings to enter challenges, try out different editing skills, add textures where i'm not entirely sure about the outcome etc, and these would be images that are maybe of 'lesser quality' (but then who's judging that?!), and it will be so useful to me to have feedback from kind, wise and informed 365-ers. i also agree with what andie, taffy and diana have said so far. will be interested to hear others' opinions ...

Great question! As I am very much an amateur and beginner in the photography field I am always thrilled when a shot comes out as I had intended, but this doesn't happen very often! I post less than perfect shots hoping the lovely community that is 365 will offer some useful feedback. So I post a mixture - some shots I am pleased with, some I'm hoping for help with and some that I find interesting in some way even if they are not technically great.

@pistache @365anne my response is so like yours its spooky!!! I also do challenges for inspiration . try not to put up lousy shots, but sometimes i do!! Am intrigued how PP happens on a snapshot, but not for the best of over 200 attempts of same thing!!!!

I don't pick my photos on how much interest I think they will generate, but whether or not it is the one I like the most that day. Often, my photo isn't perfect, just the best I could do for now...either content or technically. Usually content prevails. (Though.....I do hate posting things grossly out of focus unless it was intended. I have a tremor which makes it very hard to get a sharp photo especially with my phone, so I'm sensitive to how often I spoil a good photo with blurring.)

I, too, struggle with this question at times. Like today, there were deer in my backyard and I took a lot of shots. The best technically was of a single deer. But there were four and it's harder to get a photo of four deer together than just a single deer. And I just liked the way the photo of the four looked, even though it wasn't the best of all the shots I took. I usually post the photo that I like most but then wonder if I would have had more views, comments, and favs had I posted the technically better one. Ultimately, I'm doing this for me, and not anyone else.

I probably waiver between the two - although I am rarely technically correct unless I am involved in a challenge. I post mainly for myself but do enjoy posting things Aussie that other 365er's may find interesting. I am involved in 365 more for the community and enjoying the photos of others - hence I am usually behind in posting if time gets the better of me.

If I think of what I post, it looks like my decision making changed in the last year. Before our family lived in Germany and I only worked part time. So I had more time just to wander around admiring the beauty of our surroundings (which I knew will change one day, so I wanted to capture as many things to remember as I could). I did have time to stop and think and make any photo look best. Now that we are back in the US for over one year, everyone is working full time, kids are in school and there are other stuff that is going on, I am lucky if I have a couple of minutes to do my shot on some days. So, there it becomes a truly a scavenger hunt for anything that captures my eyes on that day without going out of my way to find it. I think it's also a good training because it teaches me to make "technical" decisions on the spot and get the picture right in 2 or 3 frames max. Kind of like speed chess instead of the "normal" chess. But that makes me appreciate the days we we do some kind of outing and I do have time just to wander around a new place with the camera, taking time to take "beautiful" pictures.

To sum up - nowadays, most of the days, it's a speed game - one thing that caught my attention, photographed the best way possible within a couple of minutes.

For me, I pick the shot that best represents the day. Sometimes its a good photo, or even an amazing one. Other times it may be a terrible, blurry one (although I do try my best to limit that). Sometimes I'll pick a "weird" photo that I like better than one that shows the day best, as long as it still shows it well enough for me.

Favs, comments, etc don't play a part in my choice but sometimes when I'm editing or deciding I'll look at a photo and think "so-and-so would like that one".

@lumpiniman Sometimes I have a shot that I'm 100% sure is the one to post. Other times if I have a few that I feel are similar are will get the family to look and see what they like best. I might still ignore them and post something else but they do often find something in a shot I have missed!
