My nightmare gets worse!

October 30th, 2020
I took my laptop to a technician this morning and what he discovered is not good at all! My hard drive is damaged and needs to be replaced. He tried to clone all my stuff onto the new one but is does not work! That means I will have to reinstall all my software!! All 12 or more! Does anyone have any experience with this? I will collect my laptop tomorrow and don't have a clue what to do. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

I can’t help much, but maybe I can get you started. Start by making sure you have a surge protector where you plug in your laptop. With your intermittent power that may be what damaged your hard drive. Make a list of all the software you remember having and add to it if you think of more. Prioritize that list so you know where to start. Can you tell if any of it is on a cloud somewhere? Did some of it come with your laptop? Anything else you may need a license for. Was your photo library spared or is it stored somewhere like a cloud? I would start with that and then it won’t look so daunting. The place where you purchased your laptop may also be able to help.

They should give back your laptop in similar condition as to when you bought it. Hopefully they will have the operating system all up to date. While reloading software is daunting, it really is just time consuming. Be sure you have all of your licenses. Make a list of what you need to load. Do you have records? So many products you will have to download install of install with a CD. When you do all this, make a list and keep a copy if you need it in the future.

I just got a new laptop a couple of days ago and am faced with similar issues. As what has been said above, the process is really just time-consuming rather than difficult. One thing that has helped me is keeping a locked spreadsheet on a cloud server (iCloud, Box, Dropbox, etc.) of all my installations which includes software name, login/pw info, activation codes, etc. May not help much at this point, but just start with the "biggies" and as you work you'll remember the less-used ones you still need. Patience is required for sure. The good news is you will have fresh installations! Good luck :-D

Bummer. We've had that happen before. It is a pain and time consuming. Definitely get a surge protector. I'd say start with the programs you use the most and work your way down. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your input, I will try my best. My problem is that I got my first pc four years ago with 68! I still don't know much about how to do things! It is rather intimidating to say the least 🤔
