Fuji Mirrorless- your thoughts please!

May 26th, 2022
Hello! So i'm thinking about investing in a Fujifilm mirrorless (with a retro vibe) and keen to hear about your experience :) Also what lens you prefer... I'm a prime lens fan and likely to lean that way for a start. thanks lovely people x

I’m surprised no one has weighed in as yet - my understanding is that these are fantastic cameras! I don’t have one…. The “feel” wasn’t right for me…. But I wished it was…. They look “cool” and image quality is supposed to be superb!

@northy thanks so much for your thoughts! I'm totally 'wooed' by the cool factor - I can't lie - and I'm hoping it feels good to handle! I read a review that said it had the same feel at the Minolta x700 which i had years ago (and still regret selling!). Its always a bit nerve wracking along with the excitement when 'investing' in new gear. Hoping to check things out in the weekend

I have a mirrorless camera, not fuji but olympus, also with a retro look. I love it At the moment I'm not using it that much (I'm mainly using my phone right now) but I always go back to my little camera. I love that it's small and light.

I have arthritis in my hands and wrists, and the main thing I like about the Fuji system is how light it is compared to the Canon system I gave up (Canon Pellix film SLR).

I've had a Fuji X-T10 with XF 18mm f/2, XF 27mm f/2.8, and XF 35mm f/1.4 lenses for several years. They balance the smaller camera nicely and weren't too front-heavy. If I had gotten heavier lenses, I would have gone with a bigger camera body, like the X-T1 (which was the XT model available when I bought my Fuji kit). I love the sharpness of these primes and, even though newer ones have come out that are better.

As much as I loved the images I made with the 18mm and 35mm lenses, I recently sold them and bought an XF 16-80mm f/4 since I do more hiking and landscape photography and wanted a zoom so I have to carry only one lens. have committed to carrying the X-T10 + 27mm f/2.8 for one month rediscover my "photographic eye" as I begin my Project. I love that this camera/lens combo is small enough to toss in a purse.

@ms_tex thanks for your thoughts. I've read quite a lot now about the various lens.

@monicac small and light(er) is what i'm going for - and to have options about what to use for different situations.

I made the switch to Fujifim, and to Mirrorless in December 2018, and have been thrilled. I got an Fujifil X-T3, and one of the things I likes was the retro vibe you mentioned. I like the look and layout similar to my early 70's/80's vintage SLRs.

I like the X-T3 enough that I added a Fujifilm X-T4 a while back, so that I have a little more flexability (and a backup if either of them breaks or is lost).

It took a while for me to make the decision to move on, I had used SLR/DSLR since the 70's, and Nikons since the early 80's. One of our local camera stores did an event back in late 2018, when I was looking to upgrade, and one of the presenters (Karen Hutton) was associated with Fujifilm... I was able to talk to her afterwards about why she uses Fujifilm, and she was most helpful (and convincing). Later, when hanging around the Fujifilm representative at the event, I had the opportunity to talk with several users who were all equally enthusiastic.

As far as lenses, I like the zooms for simplicity, and to keep my kit portable. As noted earlier, I have and X-T3 and X-T4 body, and 3x zoom lenses:
10-24mm f/4
18-55mm f/2.8-4.0
55-200mm f3.5-4.8

@lsquared thanks Larry - I did go for the FF XT3 - and have started to play - I've started with the 35mm prime - I really like primes and its in my budget!! I do plan to continue to use my Nikon - but this gives me a little more flexibility - thanks for your response and ideas!

@brigette That 35mm prime sounds fun. I'd like to have a 50mm equivalent prime, but opted fro the flexibility of zooms. I occasional set my zoom to 35mm and remember my early film days, when 35mm filam and a 50mm lens was the only lens I had!
