Picnik Advanced

April 1st, 2011
Is it worth the extra money? I especially could do with the ability to edit bits out of my pics a bit better than the blemish tool allows you to do (sure there is a technical term I don't know LOL).

I love how easy it is to use and the fact I can use it on my netbook, as this is what I am usually able to get on to do my photos.

Thanks in advance : )

I have been wondering the same thing...good question!
April 1st, 2011
Great discussion Araminta. I'm also intrigued as I use Picnik all the time and keep wondering whether to upgrade. I don't think I need anything as advanced as Photoshop and it's probably out of my price range anyway :o)
April 1st, 2011
I upgraded and I think it's worth it. I use it for most of my edits.
April 1st, 2011
I think it's totally worth it! I did upgrade around half of Januari, so you could take a look at my pictures. I use the clone-tool a lot and that's only available in the upgraded version.
I only use Picnik and Picasa for editing, because I think Photoshop is really expensive and difficult to learn. I really like the simple interface of both these programms. You can do quite a lot of editing in the upgraded version that resembles Photoshop, but I find it really easy to learn and use.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask questions.

i think Picnik is wonderful... sometimes it does effect that in photoshop. certainly easy to use. Its value for money overall.
April 1st, 2011
I paid the $25 for a year. And so far it has been worth the money, at least for me. I have use premium features, at least one if not more, on most of pictures since I have upgraded. I guess it all depends on how much you would use the extra features. I knew that I would use them, and many of them. Hope I was somewhat helpful...
April 1st, 2011
I am about to renew my $25/year membership. I don't normally do a lot of editing but what I do do, I do through Picnik since I don't have Photoshop, etc. I use it to add a watermark, resize, crop, cloning, etc. =)
April 1st, 2011
I just upgraded last week, and I'm loving it! :) I paid for it to get the extra collages offered, but I've used touch up and fancy focus and most of the other things too.
April 1st, 2011
@geertje Hi Geetje. I'm not sure how the upgrade works. Do you pay at set price or is there a scale of prices for different features?
April 1st, 2011
@psychographer I did pay a set price, I think it was $25? This is for a year and you get the full package.
April 1st, 2011
@geertje Thanks for getting back to me. I'm not sure how that translates into pounds sterling but sounds very reasonable :o)
April 1st, 2011
Picnic is good but I have a problem with paying a subscription every month/year!
I much prefer a one off fee and the ability to use offline, so if it was me I'd go for Photoshop, Lightroom or PSP.

(BTW I have Photoshop, and use basic picnik sometimes too)
April 1st, 2011
@psychographer About £15 ish.
April 1st, 2011
@pete21 How much does photoshop cost?
April 1st, 2011
@pete21 Thanks Peter :o)
April 1st, 2011
@psychographer Just checked change currency to GBP and it's £15.48 for a year

So that's four to five years for the cost of Photoshop!
April 1st, 2011
@pete21 I thought Photoshop cost £100s?
April 1st, 2011
@araminta I got it on a student licence through Adobe for just over £50. All you need is proof of a child in full time education (scan of their latest report card and photo ID for you).
April 1st, 2011
Ah thats a good comparative I suppose as well it depends on weather you are going to want a newer version of PS too later on, Hummmmm.

I think I like what others have noted the simplicity of clicking the button on picnik its a bit like playschool, where as photoshop/lightroom is like art college LOL
April 1st, 2011
@araminta I agree Araminta. I really like the simplicity of Picnik and think I may upgrade as I'm only an amateur photographer with a P&S. If ever I can afford a DSLR I may consider getting Photoshop but that'll be much further down the line :o)
April 1st, 2011
@pete21 Sorry we must of cross posted, oh thats not as bad as I though and I have a kid who goes to school, we don't have any report cards but I can have a look into it I'm sure his school would oblige : ) thanks
April 1st, 2011
I use Picnik and wont upgrade for the sinple reason that I've also sound a free editing program as well that offers the cloning and touch ups ( photoscape )..
But lately I only use the basic picnic and don't need anything else :) Though I almost upgraded just for that cloning tool which I don't even use much.. maybe 1% of my photos, then I remembered Photoscape had it.
April 1st, 2011
@melaniep *off to look at photoscape* Thanks for the heads up.

I recall someone talking about gimp or something? I may have to hang my head in shame if I have just done a huge malapropism!

Sorry I cant multi reply but I have read all the comments and thanks for the input so far. I still like Picnik though as I adore their cross processing which is very evident if you look at my pictures *blushes*

@araminta @psychographer ~ you probably already know this but you can downlaod a free 30 day trial of paint shop pro (altho i would only go for versions Xi, X2 or X3 ) paint shop pro is really easy to use and loads of tutorials online ... and technically if u trialed all 3 of those i mentioned one at a time thats 3 months worth of a program haha , i used to do that before i purchased X2 and then was given X3 by my bro :) ...... you can buy paint shop pro x3 for as little as £60 too think it was tesco i saw it that cheap ;)

im sure u could download a free trail of photo shop too i guess but i dont use it so not sure ....

srah white uses picnik a lot @coolgirlsar ... think shes bought the extras not sure tho
April 1st, 2011
@araminta My son helped me to download gimp. I have it on my laptop but can't make head nor tail of it!!
April 1st, 2011
and i dont know why i said trail ..... i ment trial DOH !
April 1st, 2011
@araminta Gimp is free btw but I think it would take too much of my time to work out how to use it :oS
April 1st, 2011
I upgraded about a month ago and feel that it is worth it (I ended up signing up for a year, because it was only $5 more than the 6 month plan.) If you use picnik and like it, I would suggest upgrading.
April 1st, 2011
@flamez Sorry Rachel. Not ignoring you. I think we just posted at the same time. Thanks for the advice :o)
April 1st, 2011
@psychographer ~ haha ! thats ok :) ... was just throwing another idea out there is all as im a great lover of paint shop pro haha !
April 1st, 2011
@brooketallman Thanks. I think I'll treat myself for Mothr's Day :o)
April 1st, 2011
Hm, I tried Gimp too. EPIC FAIL!!!!!

I couldn't even do basic tasks in gimp without tutorials, so that went in the bin!!!!!
April 1st, 2011
Ooh, I loooove Picnik. Even with photoshop edits, I have been going back into picnik after, and finishing up my images. I especially love the curves presets that let you choose different film type effects (such as velvia, reala400, tri-x 400, etc). I don't know if you can do that without the full membership, though, I have always had it. The only negative about picnik, is sometimes it runs slow, mostly if the file is very large. But, I still love it, and would recommend it to anyone. Especially considering it's only $20 a year.
April 1st, 2011
LOL I will take your word for it about Gimp (which I am glad is what it is actually called!)

Humm @flamez I actually might give that a trial but I really don't have much patience so don't feel bad if I bail on it!

*whispers* I think I might just go with picnik in the end as I'm quite a technophobe and it all scares me!
April 1st, 2011
@laceyjogautreau I think curves is advanced I certainly can't access the flim effects
April 1st, 2011
@araminta ~ haha ! i know loads seem to like picnik but a few years back when i first started playing with graphics id only heard of photo shop and paint shop pro and i opted for paint shop pro .... mind i followed online tutorials for a while when i first dowloaded it lol ..... i say go with what u are comfortable with :)
April 2nd, 2011
Gimp was crazy for me too... I was wondering about Picnik. I'm thinking I'll try Picasa. Is it easy to use?
April 2nd, 2011
Picnik is awesome. I love how simple it is to use. And, since I'm not any where near being a professional... it does everything I want it to be able to. =)
April 2nd, 2011
I have used picnik for a few years now and love it. It's pretty cheap for a year and it is super user friendly. It's quick, easy to use, cheap... works great for me!
April 2nd, 2011
@kelseyyx23 Picassa basically uses Picnik in online or ofline mode!
April 2nd, 2011
@pete21 Thanks, I'll have to try it! Is it free?
April 2nd, 2011
WOW I didn't realise you had all the film effects in curves! @araminta it has 3 different cross process options!!! ;)
April 2nd, 2011
@gingernut I actually love you!

Sold. Scoots off to buy it...........
April 2nd, 2011
I love picnik and upgraded to the premium last year, well actually Hubby bought it for me as a present for giving birth to our youngest. lol. It's easy to use and well worth the money imo. I also have GIMP which I haven't had that much trouble getting to grips with and there are always plenty of tutorials online. I did get given a copy of PSP x3 but it crashed our computer so is sitting unused at the moment until we can try it on the laptop. :(
April 3rd, 2011
@kelseyyx23 Yep go to google it's one of theirs,
I would only suggest using it if you need the photo album gizmo though, otherwise stick with Picnik.
April 3rd, 2011
@pete21 Yeah I have it now and it's not that much different... Picnik is almost better. I'm going to Picnik from it a lot though. Thanks for the info!
January 11th, 2012
another good free program is Photoscape. It is a download so you're working offline and don't have to upload first. it does pretty much what picnik does (except the skin/wrinkle touch up stuff). Until today BP (before Picknik) its what I've been using as well as Photoshop for the more complicated stuff.
