Firefox extension for 365project.org

April 10th, 2011
Hi all. I've been working on a Firefox extension to add some features to the site when using Firefox. What I've done so far:
* added the day names to the calendar view
* made the left/right arrow keys go to the prev/next photo
* a feature for quick links to people's projects (e.g. I added my girlfriend so I can quickly get to her latest photos)
* a "follow conversation" feature to be able to get back to conversations you commented on or are interested in

Screenshots:

Is this something people would use -- should I post this somewhere? Are there any other features that I could add?

Edit: I should note that this addon is totally unofficial; in no way am I affiliated with the site. I'm just a happy user of the site looking to add a couple of features to the experience that I craved in my every-day use.

Edit: I've uploaded a test version, get it here. See my comment below for more details.

Can you do a slideshow for fav's? I will use this regardless. :)

i would use this!! so cool!
April 10th, 2011
Yes i would defo use this :o)
April 10th, 2011
I'd use this if I were using FF.
April 10th, 2011
anything for chrome?
April 10th, 2011
I would definitely use it .
April 10th, 2011
Absolutely would use this!
April 10th, 2011
I would definitely use this if I still used firefox. Have switched to chrome cos I don't have to full screen to view portrait orientated photos, but am having a few problems, so may end up switching back, in which case I'll be there. :-)

@paulv This is very cool. I'm in!
April 10th, 2011
Same as @alexgdowding - anything for chrome?
April 10th, 2011
This is awesome... I've been a Firefox user for years (on my old PC, and, more recently, on my Macs) and I would definitely use this! Where's the link? ;)
April 11th, 2011
Jen
will you add these for other browsers too, like safari?
April 11th, 2011
Sweet, I use FF! I'd like an option to add a rating system to your pics but thats a whole different ballgame, and I know some people don't want it either ;) Just throwing it out there, LOL.

this is GREAT!! I love the quick link feature. Definitely would use this!

@nicklynne: Great idea. I'll give it a whirl!

@alexgdowding @katiegc24 @jenni3lynn: Unfortunately I only know Firefox's extension stuff. I'd be happy to share the code with a Chrome/Safari person if it would help them do something similar.

@arrayofblues: I'm limited to stuff that can be done locally in the browser, so I probably couldn't do much with ratings. For example, I'm storing links to profiles and discussions on the user side, rather than in the server. So while I could add ratings, but they wouldn't be able to do much since no-one else could see them.

Everyone: Thanks for the feedback. There are still some little bugs but I'll post the link once I've ironed them out a little. Meanwhile, if there's anything else I could add, let me know.

@nicklynne @emhoff @hdoyle @kjarn @sassykat @bobg @manek43509 @arrayofblues @amyhughes:

I've uploaded a test version to addons.mozilla.org. I've marked it experimental for now, so that I can update it frequently as bugs get fixed and new features added. Give it a whirl and let me know what you think.

Note that this is just something I whipped together over the weekend, so it could act weird sometimes. Apologies if it does something wonky, I can't imagine how it could possibly do anything other than forget your Quick Friends or make the site ugly, but remember that it's distributed on an "AS IS" basis, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, either express or implied. You can always disable or remove it from the addon manager (under the Tools menu). A final reminder that I'm just a fellow 365project user and I'm not associated with the site itself, this is a totally unofficial mod. Hopefully they'll add some of the features right to the site itself so our non-Firefox-wielding friends can also enjoy them :).

Enjoy!

I have added it Paul but it does nothing, can't click on anything.
April 11th, 2011
I addes it and now I will review it, I love this thing you came up with!
April 11th, 2011
I've added it, and I love it... Great stuff!
April 11th, 2011
I especially like the ability to follow conversations.
April 11th, 2011
@kjarn Fire me an email to paul-at-binarydivision-dot-com and I'll see if I can help you out.
April 11th, 2011
It works and I love it! Thank you so much!
April 11th, 2011
How do you add Quick Friends?
April 11th, 2011
@lbaker Hrm, I should probably make it more clear how to do it. For now, if you go to someone's project, the option will appear in their profile in the top right, under the option to follow them.

Here's a screencap of your project, see how I have the option at the top right to "add quickfriend"? Just click that for the person you want to Quick Friend, and you're all set.

April 11th, 2011
Oh yes..thanks....I am loving it already! Thank you!
April 11th, 2011
Just wondering if it's possible to also have their display names and not just their nickname or reply at name (or whatever it is called...lol)
April 12th, 2011
Thanks for your offer of help Paul but I've worked it all out now thank you. I think it is great but I was wondering if it could be possible to follow a conversation without having to comment first - there are quite a few threads that I'd like to follow so I can see what others say but I have nothing to say myself
April 13th, 2011
I've just added it and am already in love with it! Thanks, it works perfectly, so far!!!
April 13th, 2011
@paulv
By the way - the arrow-key thing works, but only for the latest two photos... What I mean is that, I go onto my latest photo, then I press the left arrow to go back, and it goes to the photo from the day before that, but when I press the left arrow key again, to go back one more, it returns to the latest photo...

In other words, no matter how many times I press the "back" arrow, I can only toggle between my photo from yesterday, and my photo from the day before...

Is anyone else having this problem?

(And I'm running a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, and the latest version of Firefox 4, if that information helps you figure this out, at all!)
April 13th, 2011
@kjarn: Just under the discussion's name at the top, there's a "Follow" button.

@manek43509: I'm seeing that too. I've fixed it and I'll push the update to AMO shortly.
April 15th, 2011
Thanks Paul - silly me, didn't notice the top button. Have you fixed the arrow key problem because it still doesn't work for me.
April 16th, 2011
@kjarn: I've updated it with a fix for the left arrow, you can get the update here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/enhanced-365projectorg/

Paul I thank you for this extension and I've been using it a lot but just wanted to make you aware of a problem that has arisen. My version of Firefox was upgraded to the newer version and it wiped out the extension completely. I had yo install it again and I lost all the friends and threads I was following.
May 1st, 2011
@kjarn I've sorry to hear about your data loss. I'm not sure why that would have happened since the extension simply uses Firefox's built in storage structures. I'll try to think of a way to backup/restore the data in the future to minimize frustrations like that.
June 29th, 2011
Hi PAul, once again Firefox has been upgraded and once again I've lost all my saved stuff/followed threads only this time I've also been unable to reinstall the 365 extension as it says it doesn't exist. Bugger!
June 29th, 2011
@kjarn Wow, that's frustrating Cathy. I'm not sure why that would have happened. I've asked the Firefox people if they know of anything. I need to update the extension anyway, so I'll incorporate whatever fixes they suggest. Sorry again! :(
June 29th, 2011
Thank you. Could you let me know when the Firefox extension is again available for downloading.
September 20th, 2014
Hello. Does anyone know if this extension is still available somewhere?
