What do YOU think makes a photo Great?

April 28th, 2011
I admire many different types of photos, and I of course have my own photo style. But I often ponder, what makes a photo GREAT? Is it lighting, color (or lack of it), sharpness, subject matter, perspective, or just a combination of all these? What do you think?

For me, anything funny, sweet or just pretty. Puppies and flowers are a good place to start :D

So, content?

I think a truely great photo is one that stirs the emotions that makes you think or question one that makes you cry or burst out in laughter or makes you want to be there seeing that same image for yourself. all photos rely on the basics of colour (or lack of it) sharpness subject e.c.t. but there are fewer that can elicit a feeling and I think it these photos that are great

I like the one's where I slap my forehead and think : Why didn't I think of that?
I have a variety of taste really so it is kinda hard to pinpoint.

I agree with @asrai about stirring the emotions and @tnamari about those great ideas that just pop at the viewer. Generally, I think I know a great photo when I catch myself saying "Wow!"

i think it depends on the photo....for plants/scenery it would be the crispness and color/POV etc... for portraits or lifestyle photos it would be the story being told, or the intensity of the image being shown...i am working on improving that area of my photography as i mainly stick to lifestyle/protrait:)

I really cant explain what makes a good shot for me , other than saying something that makes me go WOW or something that makes me think HOW ? hehe !

@asrai said it perfectly. That's how I choose the photos I love, the ones that I have a physical and emotional response.

I like photos that show individual perspective. Portrait photos that show an emotional connection you might not otherwise see, weather or landscape photos that show a physical geographical perspective that is different from my own, and even "i've never looked at it that way" type photos. Those are also the types of photos I try to take for 365 - this project is "mine," but you can't help but start doing your project as a presentation when you know what your followers enjoy seeing from you. :)

Something that tells a story.

For me, it's always been the WOW factor. If a photo makes me think, or even better, say, WOW! then it's probably a really good, if not great photo.

For me, aside from the technicalities such as composition, color and lighting, what makes a photo stand out is the STORY behind it and the NARRATIVE it portrays. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

For me, the first thing that catches my eye is an interesting or unique subject. It can be types of wildlife, architecture, flora, and yes, even people. Composition and color are the next things that grab my attention. After all that, I believe sharpness (focus) is the one thing that really tops it off.
Everyone has their own preferences, so as the saying goes, "....it's all in the eye of the beholder."
