New Camera Considerations.

June 9th, 2011
I am considering looking for a new investment in another DSLR. I currently have the Nikon d40x and it's having issues after a nice 4 year relationship. I have three lenses and a flash (which is kinda dead because of an unfortunate battery explosion issue...). I have a couple of questions...

1. What camera can I get that I can use my lenses and flash with? Nikon, but are there models that certain lenses won't work with?

2. I would rather "upgrade" than do a lateral move. But I don't have $3000 laying around. What would be a good choice for me?

Thanks so much! :)

There is that new Nikon D5100 which is 16.1 mp and is around £800, thats like $1300. It is full of new features and It would work with the lenses.

I used this link to find out if my old (like 30 years!!) nikkor lenses would fit with a D90 before I got it. I am extremely happy with my D90 and it is just below the "pro" range but still high quality photos and lots of functions/options that you would get with a higher dollar camera.

sorry for all the notificiatons, I was trying to create the hyperlink and it wouldn't go through for a few tries.

@nicolekos - I second the D5100. Any lens or flash that worked on your D40x will still work on a D5100. A step up from that would be the D7000. It has the same sensor as the D5100, but it's got a better focusing motor, shoots faster frames per second, has an internal focusing motor so it can focus Non AF-S/AF-I lenses, has a top LCD screen, two SD card slots, and a few other things. It's an awesome camera for the money.

I've seen the D5100 body going for around $800 USD and the D7000 body going for $1200 USD.

@luke @sudweeks Thanks! While I was waiting for replies, I was digging and kinda came up with both the D5100 and the D7000... I guess if money was no object, it would be the 7000? So many I wait and save. My lenses will fit on either camera, right? Thanks so much!

@shadesofgrey :( The hyperlink doesn't work. Do you think the D90 should be thrown into the pot with the 5100 and 7000? It seems like it is much less expensive and may have a little less bells and whistles than the other two.

Sorry, here is the link for the lenses: http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/slr-lens.html

I personally think you should keep the the D90 in contention. The D5000 was version of the D90 and the 5100 is an upgrade of that. I enjoy being able to see my settings on the top of my camera instead of having to look in the viewfinder like the 5100. If you can afford the the D7000 that would be a way to go to get the best. I would find a camera shop where you can pick them up and feel which one you like and weigh the other options that are important to you. I am not concerned about video, that is another reason I steered away from the D5100.

Try this link for one btwn the 5100 and the 7000:

Depending on what you'd like to focus on for future photographic projects, I went from a D40X to a D300s (refurbished) and love it. If not the D300, than I share Shades of Grey's point for the D90. And if a camera is refurbished or used (D300, D300s, etc), take a second glance at it. Chances are, you will not be dissapointed; especially given that the price of a used D300 is near the price of a new D90.

I dont know much about the others, but the D90 is an improvement for the D70, a camera I had as a second body at work. I found it really top for the dosh, the only quibble was the dial for the camera settings was easily knocked out of place - and by the pics, the D90 looks the same. I also saw quite a few other photographers using the D90 as a second or third body, which was a good sign in my eyes!
