Need more education

Aside from a basic photo class that I took in college, many years ago, I don't have a lot of knowledge about photography. I really love to take pictures, it relaxes me, but I don't know all of the technical jargon or manual settings on my camera. I have recently been getting alot of requests to do maternity shoots, which I love, but I really feel like I need to take some courses so that I can get even better. I don't have a lot of time so I was thinking of doing classes online. I looked into The Photography Institute, it sounds like a good start, however it is pricey at $1000 for a 24 week course. Does anyone have any info on this school or another that might be beneficial for me?

Hi Adrienne,

I'm taking photography classes at my local adult ed school. It's a community high school. Not sure where you live but I feel that I've grown so much since I started taking classes. They are very reasonable at $60 for a 12 week class. You might think about looking into an adult ed school, or local community center schools. It doesn't have to be a college for you to benefit from it.

Well I live in a small town and the technical school that is here only has a program that is m-f and all day, which I can't do. I'm going to keep looking, but thx Karen.

Is there a close community college? Several years ago I took an 8 week workshop at a local community college that was taught by a photographer. He liked my photos, so he had me come back a few times for some extra time with him (this was when film was still big), so I got to see the darkroom, and he talked a lot about the business in general. It was a good experience. Hopefully you have something like that close by.

Hi Adrienne

It's only a small start, but have you been through Nikon's site "how to" (I see you use a D90)... here for example: http://chsvimg.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/d90/en/advanced-function/

I see that you also use a Canon EOS - here's there online technical training: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/enjoydslr/part2/2A.html

@ Loni, there is a community college and they do offer a course in digital photography but the days and the hours aren't great. Having said that, I haven't ruled it out though.
@ Eleanor, I will check out both of those!
@ Becky, I'm looking into that, thx!

Hi Andrienne, I also looked into this online course.I contacted one of the men who had written a testimonial on the site to see what his opinion was.( He also happens to be the photography teacher that "Brenda Ashley" has been going to). His reply in a nut shell was that it was an awesome course and that he could highly recommend it. It is alot of money but seems to cover a alot in it.Most basic courses here are about $300 but then you would need to do other courses, they would all add up to well over the $1000 by the time you did all the courses that this one covers.

Thx, Kirsty, I think I'm going to take the plunge and go with The Photography Institute.
