First, I'm back from vacation! I look forward to uploading pics from the last week. It is going to be very hard to narrow the field of 800+ pics down to just 12 or so...plus fillers. Second, I realize that I'm thowing this into a January calendar hole! I'm going to post a discussion thread to see if I can find out what kind of little bird this is. I took this on Monday (9/19) up in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.
Oh, and in case you're interested, this is my 1000th picture posted!!!!
@noaceyet@thebluegnu@robv@mikew@mej2011 I'm finding "grey headed dark eyed junco" and "junco hyemalis (grey headed race)" So I guess that's it. I learned something new!!
@msk1p2 Don't we all - thanks for the update...I'm no bird fundi - I was just guessing.. :) and some of the google images seemed to be close. Glad you're sorted.
If you are on Flickr, http://www.flickr.com/groups/bird_id_group/ is a good group to join. I only ask when I can't find it on my own, or if I'm just not certain I've got it right
Male Gray-headed Junco a.k.a. Dark-eyed Junco. There are several different appearances of this one bird. Initially they all had different names and were classified differently. But now they're all lumped together, even though they look completely different. Great shots of him by the way!!
@olivetreeann@mikew@noaceyet@robv This is what I usually see around home in terms of Dark Eyed Juncos...so I wasn't aware of the many color variations.
Yes- @msk1p2 I see the same kind, but the bird book that I have also showed one similar to your shot above, so I felt it was a match. I've only had the slate grey/black version in my yard, so my first thought was that it wasn't a Junco at all. There was also an Oregon Junco pictured. Thanks for a fun learning experience!
i think @noaceyet was right . =)
