I am just now learning to do picture editing and someone suggested that I try photoshop, could you give me some advice on which one to start with? Whether it be photoshop or equal. Thanks

I used a very basic photoshop years ago that came with my soft ware...
now I use photofiltre free download program from sonic website..
its similar to photoshop and easy to use. most of my pics are edited on there..
I would try one of the free soft wares first before buying photoshop.. as its very costly..

also in the states at least if you are a student or buying for a student you can get it cheaper....
and so after all that I cant really suggest what photoshop to get.. I thought there was only one , just updated etc..

I think you can download a free trial of photoshop... just google it..

Do you mean which version of Adobe Photoshop or which image editing program regardless of the maker?
Photoshop CS5 is very powerful, very expensive and a tiny bit daunting. It is the industry standard.
Photoshop Elements is the light version and is capable in itself. Less versatile than the full version, but much less expensive.
Gimp is very powerful as well. A bit more daunting than Photoshop, but free.
Paint Shop Pro is an old favourite of mine, a nice balance of power and cost.
Picnik is used by loads of people here, but I cannot comment as I never have.

@iview Photoshop is very cost prohibitive for me, so I'm at the mercy of what's the most affordable on my "coin purse" budget. After using the limited processing program that came in the computer, someone suggested I try Picnik or Picasa. They both have free versions. I tried Picasa and it was ok. I also tried Picnik and found it really easy to use. The free version is great to "wet your feet" in processing and the "Premium" version is extremely affordable. So far it has given me the ability to play around with processing without becoming overwhelmed with the technical side. But since it's not top of the line, it is limited in what it can and can't do. But it's been just what I needed for now and I'm happy with the results. There are other freebie and affordable processing sites like Picnik, but I'm unfamiliar with the names, otherwise I'd suggest checking them out too. I suppose if you just google photo processing/editing a whole list of names will appear. I hope that helps in some way.

I agree with @olivetreeann regarding how great Picnik is for general editing. It's free (with the Premium version being around $25 per year) and is all I use. I did recently buy Photomatix Pro 4 to create some HDR pics which is fun too, but certainly not necessary for getting started with processing. In a nutshell, I would try Picnik before anything else....

It really depends on what you'll use it for, coz PS is an advanced software, and also how you like the software to be ie user friendly, fast, lots of editing power, etc. So what are your needs and wants @iview ?

dont forget there's also GIMP which basically looks like photoshop but just doenst have all the bells and whistles. Still, its free and good. Like photoshop, the learning curve is HUGE so i suggest youtube it and go tutorial by tutorial
