Best Portrait Lens - Tamron 28-75mm??

Hi there!
I am looking for you help! :)
I want to upgrade my basic camera lens -- I have been using the kit lens (18-55mm) for years now and feel the need to upgrade to a more appropriate portrait lens. I am a self-taught/amateur photographer with a side photography business that has been doing very well --- mostly family, children, some maternity & baby portraiture.

I have a Canon Rebel XTi DSLR. I have been researching the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and the Canon 50mm. I checked into the Canon 24-70mm (way out of my budget!).

Does anyone out there in 365-Land have the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8? If so, how do you like it?

Is there another "best portrait" lens out there you'd recommend?

Thanks so much for your time & feedback! I am looking to purchase very soon!
Thanks!
Amy

I have the 50mm lens and its often viewed as a fantastic lens. My problem is i have a 450D which I beleive is the same as yours? but because its a crop body, the lens becomes the equivalent of something like a 70mm so when i'm doing portraits, i feel that i'm too far away from the subject to have any connection to them. That said, i'm thinking for mostly full length shots. if you just want to take mainly upper body / head shots then the 50mm is amazingly fast and sharp

I cant offer any advice on the tamron since I dont have one. I do have the canon 24-105 L lens which is a great all round lens but apparantly the quality of this can vary a bit.

Maybe a 85mm f1.8....?

Hey, like Weng I have the 450D and the 50mm. It's an excellent lens but the camera does turn it into an 80mm, which means you need some distance between you and the subject! However, it's a great lens and tack sharp. At f/1.8 - especially at the price you can get it for - it's brilliant! I would go for the Canon 28mm f/2.8, you can get it for a decent price, and on the 400D (the XTi in your land), it will be something like 45mm, which is a good focal range for more intimate shots.

Hey!

I definitely suggest going with the 50mm, but going by Weng's comment, you may run into some problems being far away.

How about the 28mm f/1.8 lens? http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/28mm-f18.htm

i should probably add that on my last holidays I actually used the 50mm lens in very low light in the cellars of the champagne houses. Everyone else had their happy snappies and i'm never a big fan of those horrible flashes but with the 50mm i was able to pop away shots with no flash and they turned out great!

In the studio i find that I use it maybe 15% of the time (if that) for the reason above and also the further back you go, the more you have to worry about getting stands / lights in the picture :). Still, for the price, its worth buying it for the pin sharp head shots and shallow depth of field that it'll give you

Good luck with whatever you decide!!!
