This is becoming impossible, by the time I get around to taking my picture for the day, it's dark and I'm completely uninspired. PLEH! How do you deal with these short days?
I'm not doing too well either. I guess we all will have to work on our night photography ;). What helps me getting through it is that I only have one and a half months of the project left so that should be a piece of cake after 10 and a half months ;).
Take 7 photos on the weekend, and don't put them up all at once! I don't believe in using fillers from ages ago, but I allow myself to cheat within any one given week :)
Problem is, I didn't take them myself this week, and have officially run out! Bleugh. I'm in the club too...
@jannkc I agree, but tell you what - energy efficient light bulbs make for blooming awful photography. And that's all I've got to play with at the moment! Need to buy myself a proper lamp!
I've been forced into using my lunch break to take my photos because it's dark by the time I get off work. That really doesn't leave many options or enough time to get a good photo each day though!
I know the feeling but still it amuses me because most of us started sometime last winter and we survived it somehow. :-) My big problem is staying up late enough to comment....I do a few and then want to go to bed (darkness for 2 hours=time for bed for me, apparently)!
Maybe we should start some sort of list of ideas to help us all through this.
There's:
1 Legos and other toys
2 the WWYD challenges (you can edit these photos with taking any new ones, if you want to)
3 Practice water crowns and/or bokeh
4 pick a room and set up your tripod for a cloning pic
5 indoor sneaky shots at public places like shopping malls
6 practice night shots! Neon and other lights, light trails, buildings with lit windows--reflected in water a plus
7 Take daytime pix on your lunch break---I do that a lot anyway. :-)
8 make collages of older shots--example, I took a lot of moth photos and also dragonfly photos. Not as awesome as actually shooting a new pic, but editing is good for you. :-)
Anyway, these are some of what I have planned for myself. Put up your ideas and we can all help each other out. :-)
I have been having trouble getting my photos uploaded everyday I normally take a few pictures every day but I am not doing good with uploading them between work school and everything else I just find myself running short and this time change is now killing me too....but I am trying to fix the problem by always taking my camera with me every where I go and also using my phone to take pictures not as good as my camera but defiantly can take good photos! Just my thoughts :)
I have officially reached super busy at work so I adjusted my personal rule for a photo every day so I may take a bunch of photos on one day and use them on other days
Also I have had to adjust to
- Take them in the morning or at lunch (usually take after work)
-look at new perspectives (such as up)
- work off the list of photo must haves that are indoor shots
@miley89 I completely understand - i'm in New Zealand so when you guys were taking summer shots I was struggling to take photos in winter after working all day!
It was a good time for sunsets as it was setting when I was leaving tho!
You could visit a friend and find some hidden treasures in there house.
Take a torch and do spot light photos.
Look for the alphabet or numbers.
Self portraits?
Hope that helps somehow - otherwise look at photos from us kiwi and aussie 365'ers - we've had our winter!
I use my lunch break and if I can't, I'm forced to taking inside shots with artificial light. I guess the good news is, I can get away from work for awhile and work on my flash skills!
I don't pressure myself to take the pic that day. I take pics when I get a chance and essentially spend my 365 daily time editing, posting, commenting - still it takes me an hour or so a day. For those who view this as a journal my way isn't feasible, but I like to view it as an art project to which I contribute something daily. Good luck. Also - I've noticed people apologize abjectly whenever they post something they're proud of from the past - I don't want to hear that it's filler of "just filler" - if you like it and want to share it - put it up and let me judge for myself, I say.
I am having trouble now too. My last few days I found a few flowers but now they are all gone. I took a photo of plates...how lame is that! I will have to go thru this thread a bit more, out of time now. I like the idea by @shadesofgrey about buying flowers. I did not think of that! Thanks!
Do what I want to do but I don't and was kicking myself yesterday. The (do) thing is having a camera close by all the time, even when in the car. If I had, had mine yesterday you would be looking at a fantastic Sun picture. The cloud cover was such that the color of the sun was from red to mauve or maybe a reddish peach, hard to describe. It looked huge, and a perfect roundness. I was seeing it on my way home from work, and setting it was, and I knew I did not have enough time to get home and get my camera. I was very disappointed in myself for not having it with me. So I really want to be like a good boy scout===BE PREPAIRED
I know exactly what you mean. I usually don't go out shooting photos until 1-2PM, but by that point I've only got three hours of sunlight left. Lame.
@jannaellen But I *know* you'll be back for Year 2. Right? Right!
I don't much like shooting at night. In fact I pretty much hate this time of year with a passion. But...I make do with what I've got so try these:
- More sunsets
- The Blue Hour (about 30 minutes after sunset)
- Light trails
- Outdoor night-time portraits
- Star fields and star trails
- Long exposures with motion blur (cars, boats, planes, people)
Ugh, I hear ya! I've been in a slump for a few months now! And now it's going to be harder with the time change and it being dark out so early! Good luck!
@lluniau I agree its how I currently run my project due to my busy work and family life...also with winter I do a lot more creative indoor type projects as well
How about the colors of the rainbow- something a different color every day ?
Open a book to any page and find something that starts with the first letter on that page OR the last Number on the page ex. p.134= four of something
A different perspective lie on the floor and look up or lie on your belly.
Pick a song and use the lyrics as suggestions
My ideas so far (although I love the above ideas and will probably use some of them very soon):
1. Take my daily shots at breakfast time.
2. Take shots around lunch time. (I may get skinny. -hehehe)
3. Take pictures looking out the windows at sunset, in the morning, or my houseplants in the window.
4. Steal a few minutes here and there to take quick shots.
5. Walk instead of drive and take shots along my walk.
6. Take shots when I arrive at my destination. Example: when I arrive at my mother's home for my daily visit with her.
In other words, I have been making opportunities for picture taking. As the days get shorter and shorter, getting my shots in will become more of a challenge.
Here are my tips:
#1. Always have a camera on me, even if it's just my iphone, and take photos throughout the day, including around the workplace.
#2. I experiment w/ macro at night using my P&S camera (I don't have a macro lens for my SLR) using a white sheet of paper as background and desk lamps on the object. I look around the house for things that might look cool close up in macro.
These short day light hours are a difficulty to me too since I committed to my 2nd year project being our garden! This year I haven't minded too much if the shot wasn't taken on the exact day. Use your weekends to capture what's happening around you outside, then use the week to edit etc for posting. If you capture somehting great to post during the week all the better!
First and foremost I would like to thank EVERYBODY for such a great response to my thread, I was not expecting so many comments. I have read through and appreciate all of your response. Nice to know that others are facing the same struggles, I guess that's what the 365 community is all about! ThANKS Again! xx
Oh no @reba I take a picture a day, religiously! I've never used a filler. I think that defeats the object of 365 for me.
I tried splash once. I think it was too adventurous for me!! @shadesofgrey
My handbag Nikon PS died a couple of months back!! Trying to carry my SLR in my bag at all times can be a nightmare. I took it out with me the other night and well... I forgot to put the battery in.. grrr.. Extra weight!! @rrt
That's funny because I sometimes wish I could drive to get to those pretty rural spots I live fairly near too. It's just so hard being stuck in the same place all the time. I need a holiday some new scenery, new things to photograph and new inspiration. Fed up with the same old routine, I guess you know how it is! @daisy
I have been going to one or the other of the nearby parks before work. There are photos lurking in the house, but I am trying to save those for the truly dismal days.
I'm finding myself driving out places where there might be lit buildings! and now trying to find interesting macros in client buildings that i can shoot without giving client identity away!
@miley89 If you have a built in flash, it's not really hard at all, actually. Check this shot out. I put the camera on a tripod and focused on the splash, then played with the settings till I got the motion freeze I was going for. I enhanced the colors in PS and I also sharpened the image, thats how the water is so clear. You can do it and once you do, will be surprised how easy it is!
@jasonbarnette Sometimes I'm an almost nice guy....maybe you could incorporate a splash with your infamous "shadow" shot......or not. I'm not sure I want to get that personal with you.
@reba You're welcome! My blog has changed a lot of the last year and a half since I got it started. I focus mostly on my travel photography now, but I still keep the tuts up.
@shadesofgrey I am never gonna be able to live down The Shadow on this site, huh? And, yes, I've decided it needed to be a proper noun for as often as it has been used lately.
Tripods are handy when you remember to carry them. Hmmm must remember to carry mine more often, also make the most of your days off if you get three or four good photos it can relive the pressure a bit ;-)
@shadesofgrey Hmmmm....I think @grecican@kjarn@tabbycat@pwallis are either asleep, ignoring us, or dead. Cause those are the only three reasons they could possibly not be commenting on this discussion already.
@shadesofgrey I really, really hope not...but it does appear as The Shadow has hijacked yet another thread. I need a logo, motto, letterhead or something now. Wait...I've got my logo...it just may be NSFW haha.
I also wonder if every time I tag @grecican@kjarn@tabbycat@pwallis do they get a separate notification? Will they log on next and see they've been mentioned in about a dozen conversations?
@jasonbarnette@shadesofgrey No such luck, Shadow Boy! Lack of food, a trip to the supermarket and then delicious 88c pizza was to blame, but I'm alert and glued as of now!
@tabbycat Shadow Man. Get it right ;) Well if you've had a dreadful day I hear hijacking threads and starting completely off-topic conversations is a great way to spend time!
@miley89 I've been taking some in the mornings, before work, but it's hard w/ getting my kids off to school, etc... I'm happy for this week's theme "home" because it's allowed me to take some indoor shots :-)
@jasonbarnette Well, yes, I was just about to mention that I have certain psychic abilities and in fact, I'm chanelling The Shadow as we speak! Yes, he's coming thru very strongly! He says that whilst he is flattered by all the attention, he wonders if the being latest 365 superstar (possibly trumping the mighty Socks?) is the best that he can do?? He is now aspiring to his own Wikipedia entry and perhaps the cover of Time and wonders if you would be amenable to making these wishes of his come true..?
@tabbycat@jasonbarnette I hear he has an in with National Geograpic.....who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?.....The Shadow knows muhahahahaha
@tabbycat Your channeling The Shadow? Coming through very strongly? OMG I'm trying so hard not to think of all the puns in those statements. Pun totally intended.
@shadesofgrey I am very intrigued at the moment. Usually my mind *is* worse than any others, but I actually don't know what you're talking about. Spell it out for me. Using small words.
@jasonbarnette following the lines of your infamous selfie/series and insert my inflammatory goading comment about a certain hairless (well proven wrong) body part= next "selfie" although not the most flattering view nor one I am interested in really seeing.
@jasonbarnette@shadesofgrey I think one shadow was more than enough boys although maybe you could start a 'guess the shadow' competition! Sorry I haven't been around, had to sleep then work all day but thanks for all the notifications!
@kjarn Hahaha...no thanks! Honestly, I was so focused on the darkness around my body that I never even noticed that damn shadow. Man do I ever wish I'd paid closer attention now! How many notifications did you end up getting?
Well, I spend these dark days (especially those spent indoors recovering from a cold!) reprocessing some of the stuff that threw itelf in front ot my lens when the weather was good, and I couldn't find room for at the time. There is always a backlog awaiting an opportunity to be seen.
This is a good time of the year to take nighttime shots. You don't have to stay up so late waiting for it to get dark! Remember tripod, remote, a jacket and gloves, oh and an extra battery, and you can have a field day with long exposure shots.
As far as daylight, get up earlier. Sunday had about the same amount of sunlight as Saturday, just starting an hour earlier. Sure, the days do get shorter, but the morning is full of sunlight. Not like the late night shows are all that interesting. ;-)
This is a long thread and not for NO reason! This shortage of daylight seems to be dreadful. I leave for work at 6:30 AM (dark) and get home about 6:30 or 7 (dark). Hmmmm....but I saw some good ideas up there. And I also, like others up there, will post recent filler. I have taken a photo a day, but I dont' always make myself use those particular photos if they are horrible and all of car tailights in the dark. Haha!
Jani @janmaki has created a series of kitchen utensils - well abstracts based on them. He's also a bokeh master using household stuff.
Other ideas include all the ornaments and other things inside that I have been looking at and thinking there's a long winter of no light coming up, let's save that one until later, water shots, bubbles in water, those shots of objects in bubbles, reflections in mirrors, learning to set up shots like those Janna Ellen @jannaellen has reached the popular page with recently, trying to take food effectively, nicely subdued lighting shots of body parts or nude selfies
Last winter, I dealt with it by learning new tricks. Night photography can be great fun too, not to mention all the opportunities you'll find indoors when you really look.

I think I might try a lot of those this winter just for fun. Been a long time since I did a water splash photo.
@shadesofgrey I am never gonna be able to live down The Shadow on this site, huh? And, yes, I've decided it needed to be a proper noun for as often as it has been used lately.

Lame.

Yep, we sure do! Keep 'em coming!! My day is dreadful, and I need as many welcome distractions as you can throw my way! :-)
I am, however, thinking of other ways to play with shadows.
