I Think I'll Write a BOOK for All of You

December 19th, 2011
Well it's not as though I needed another way to increase my Awesomeness, but then a couple of weeks ago I actually had a thought. For comparison: when Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity, his mind lit a light bulb. When I had this thought, it lit Tokyo. Good enough?

OK...here is my idea: I'm writing a photography book specifically gear toward this site.

How to Shoot 365 Photos in a Year

Catch your breath. The room will stop spinning in a moment. Feeling better now? Sorry I should have warned you to sit. Hope no one was driving when they read that.

So here is my goal: I wanted to write a book that would discuss a lot of the topics that are brought up here every single day and give you tons of ideas. Here is a breakdown of the book as I have it right now:

Part I - The Right Stuff:
I'll talk about the different types of cameras from simple P&S to bridge cameras and professional DSLRs. I'll explain what different lenses are, which ones to avoid, and how to buy them. Strobes, remote triggers, tripods, bags, software, anything and everything else you need or could want. I'll start with the basic and tell you what you need for different topics later.

Part II - Knowing is Half the Battle
Here I will go over camera basics including ISO, aperture, exposure, white balance, and all the different rules of photography like the Rule of Thirds, Sunny 16 Rule, and 600 Rule. I'll explain DOF, how to prevent camera shake, and what the different scene modes on simpler cameras do. I've gone through weeks of discussions on the site and addressed a lot of common questions frequently asked. By the time you finish reading this section, you will only shoot in Manual Mode from then on.

Part III - Twenty Two Terrific Tutorials (are these titles corny or WHAT?)
I will give you detailed descriptions of my 22 most popular tutorials. This is an area I would like to see some feedback on. What tutorials would you like to see? I will for sure include Water Drops, Lightning, Fireworks, Star Trails, Light Trails, Fill Flash, Indoor Photography, and my most popular ever How to Shoot a Broken Light Bulb Filament (viewed over 18,000 times this year!)

Part IV - 365 Ideas + 135 More Ideas + 1 Great Idea
I'll give you more ideas for photography than you can possibly even shoot in a single year! I'll start from "Basic" and work my way up through "Awesomely Advanced". That way you can start wherever you want, skip around a bit, or do more than one a day. The "1 Great Idea?" You'll have to buy the book to find out what that is muahahaha

Part V - The Bottomless Pit of Resources
I'll give you every tutorial site, photography blog, photography aid, online resource, camera selection guide, any site I have ever bookmarked for the sake of photography. Everything from where to start your own site to editing photos with action scripts and lists of photography contests. I'll probably have close to 400 links to share.

Part VI - Jason is Awesome
This section will be written with invisible ink and can only be viewed by moonlight during a Lunar Eclipse. Yeah. Good luck with that one.

Right now, I'm thinking of doing a PDF version for instant gratification and also a print version through Amazon. Unfortunately, I'm finding it incredibly difficult to find anyone who self-publishes PDF books anymore as everyone has switched to .mobi for eBooks on Kinda and iPad. So, anyone who buys the PDF version will receive a wonderful email from me. I mean...just that alone should make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I'm not looking to make any profit off this book. It costs money to publish the books and have them printed, so that is basically all the money I'll be making. With that said, here is what I'm thinking for prices:

$10 for the PDF
$22 for the Print Edition, plus about $4 S&O through Amazon

Alright...I didn't just post this to show how awesome I am. Actually...I did. But also: to get feedback, suggestions, wolf calls, and ideas.

What tutorials would you like to see in the book?

What question have you always had but never seen addressed in a discussion?

Would you like to see any other information?

Something to keep in mind is that this is NOT a complete book on how to take better photos. I could write 100+ pages just on that one topic. Instead, this is a book geared toward helping you take manual control of whatever camera you have, give you ideas on how to upgrade at some point, the tutorials will keep you busy for weeks, and with 500 ideas + 1 Great Idea you won't run out of things to shoot for all of 2012.

At this point, I'm pretty sure I *am* the cause of the Apocalypse. I think my Awesomeness will one day cause the Earth to implode. Have lots of babies now.
December 19th, 2011
What is the sunny 16 rule? What's the 600 rule?
December 19th, 2011
@kerristephens In the book :P Haha
December 19th, 2011
crap, and I just bought a journaling book to write down all your good advice. Will this be available on my ereader. If you need a test reader, sign me up and I would pay anyway and could not care less if you made money on it or not. You really have helped me out. When I was doing my smoke, I sometimes ask myself, What would Lord of the Dark Shadows tell me to do.

Hey, just read the new convo on bokeh posted today. Any thoughts to make my bokeh better?
December 19th, 2011
Will your follower's get signed copies? ;)
December 19th, 2011
Oh you want more. Take a list at the Year Two tasks and fire away. I actually put a space for tutorials to go besides the topics so I could link to yours or jinx informative lessons.
December 19th, 2011
OK Mr AwesomePants. I would make sure that you don't exclude the noobs. When I started this project I knew I liked taking pictures, I knew I wanted to have a go at 365 but that was about it.
You want to include the simple stuff, reasons for doing the project. Ways to keep yourself motivated when the last thing you want to do is pick up a camera, let alone find something to shoot.
If you're aligning it to this site, then how to share, how to reply, how to use tags, how to comment would be useful.
Erm, I'm knackered so my brain is melting right now, so I can't think of anything else, but I'll chip in if I do :)
December 19th, 2011
$22 i'm in!
December 19th, 2011
@kerristephens The Sunny 16 Rule tells you how to set your exposure without using a meter, and the 600 Rule tells you how long to make your exposure while shooting star trails. See! You already learned something.

@brumbe Can ereaders like the Nook, Kindle, and iPads read PDF files? Do they have PDF viewers? Also: would you be fine just reading the PDF version on your computer? I had already taken a look at your wonderful list...thank you!

@jasehoad OH! I hadn't thought of that. *Ego gets bigger* I guess I could work that out haha! Yes. I'll do that.

@minxymissk This book is written specifically for anyone of any level of experience. In fact...I now have a slug line for the book :P Those are great suggestions. I'm included information about 365 Project in the book, but I just might go ahead an include a larger section on how to properly use the site. Seems like "How do I get more followers" and "How do I include photos in a discussion" are popular questions. Thanks!

@d4wn Sweet. You get a signed copy :P

Signed PDF copies for all my followers who buy one. Seriously...that will be worth something in like 200 years!

Slug line for book: From Noobs to Pros, This Book is For You!
December 19th, 2011
@jasonbarnette But it won't be out in time for Christmas or the New Year?
December 19th, 2011
One thought on the topic of cameras; how long will the information remain valid? Camera's change and sellers change and so do resources. If the information is not relevent for several years, the book may not sell. Talking about cameras in general would be fine but there are so many kinds of cameras and many people are using their phones now.

What about breaking it up into separate ebooks? Each chapter a book which you could sell for say $5. You could then keep the information current by updating the chapter. This would be preferrable to outdated information.
December 19th, 2011
@jasonbarnette All eReaders should have PDF-reading capabilities. I know both the iPad and the Kindle do, and I'm assuming the Nook as well. I have eleventy apps on my iPad alone that let me read PDFs. :)

The one thing on this list I would look at trimming down is the section of links. One - that's going to be a lot of work organizing them, etc. Two, you'll have to check them all to make sure they are still active, unbroken, etc. I would definitely include links, just maybe not quite so many, because, like Dorrena brought up, those can get outdated. I hate books that provide big listings of links, but the book is like five years old, so when you go to the links, half of them aren't there anymore.

P.S. I also like the idea of a "why do a project" section? I know that I started mine rather on a lark, and I had absolutely no clue whatsoever how transformative it would be, not just to my photography, but to my life.

P.S.S. Also, and you know me, so you know this request - mebbe a mention or two or summat about shooting on film, and the merits thereof? Just a thought. :)
December 19th, 2011
Can't wait till it is out. It seems to be missing two or three sections although these could be included as sections within existing framework:
(i) Hints on what and where to buy cheap props and aids such as sheets of foam and plastic. It would be great to see a few photos of Jason shopping in the aisles at the 24 hour K-mart or convenience store. I always like these accounts;
(ii) Jason is not just awesome, but Jason also likes to share his pain which is always tinged with hope. This is really as separate chapter in my view, just as Pascal had aphorisms or Nietszche a will to power, Jason avoids mendacity, is constructive and wonderfully sentimental. Jason's desires fit neatly here, although could count as roman iii.

Think this awesomeness is underpriced
December 19th, 2011
@kerristephens I've already been secretly working on this for two weeks now. I am hoping to have it out for sale on Amazon, through my website, and photography blog by December 26. So...just a tad bit late for Christmas...but hey I may just stop sleeping for a week and hammer it all out!

@dmortega The information I give on cameras will not be specific to "PIck this camera for these reasons" but rather the difference between P&S, Bridge, and DSLR cameras, why you need one over the other, what sensor size means, and how to look at the right information to buy one. This information will be good so long as digital cameras are still made. I hadn't thought about phone cameras, though, thanks for pointing that out.
December 19th, 2011
Before I clicked on this thread I just knew you were the one writing it!

It sounds a great idea, I really appreciate your tutorials but hate reading anything lengthy off screen so I think I'd be ordering a copy.

Off the top of my head I'd say include your multiple exposure light trail and burning light bulb tutorials.
December 19th, 2011
To answer your question to @brumbe :

Yeah, most ereaders have the facility to read PDF, but they aren't great at it. If you write it as a word document, there are places online to can convert it (free) straight into epub or similar though, so most ereaders can read it. And I think if you email straight to kindle it comes in their own special format.
December 19th, 2011
@jasonbarnette As I made several awesome suggestions, I want a signed copy too :)
December 19th, 2011
Don't forget those cameras on your pc or iPad. ;-)
December 19th, 2011
I know a lot of people on here decided at some point to start or attempt to start their own photography business. While this subject alone is probably worthy of a coffee table sized book and not exactly directly relevant to your proposed tome, it might help to include some general how to go about getting started tips, maybe as a small chapter. You could include a list of considerations i.e. education, expenses, basic equipment needed for studio vs nature/artistic photography business, do you really take photos people want to see/buy?... a few pages of why to charge more than $30 an hour, resources that they could explore to further their knowledge before they jump in with both feet, that type of thing....something to get them started but definitely not the point of the book by any means.

P.S. GI Joe might have some copyright infringement issues with Part II. JSYK
December 19th, 2011
Yes, but if we have this book then what in the heck would the discussions be about?
You might want to include a whole chapter on the how to whine about the popular page and top 20, or better yet to NOT whine about them!

PS Like @emmar84 I KNEW it was you that started this discussion!
December 19th, 2011
Oh and don't forge to include a dictionary of all the misused and over used words on this site!

Here's a reference to get you started:

December 19th, 2011
Ooh and I'd like a tutorial for clones - I love those shots :)
December 19th, 2011
Oh and have you tested the invisible lunar eclipse e-ink that Kindle just came out with? Soooo amazing! Might not work on other e-books though. You know how those people protect their secrets.
December 19th, 2011
@shadesofgrey Actually...THAT is a very good point. However, Jason is not only Awesome, but Jason is wise. Am I really talking about myself in the third person now? Wow.

I checked it out through the Patent and Copyright Office. The trademark on "Knowing is Half the Battle" is dead. Expired five years ago. But thanks for looking out for me, though.
December 19th, 2011
@beautifulthing YESSSS! I started for the same reason and I agree about the film thingy majig, and the merit whatsits.
December 19th, 2011
@shadesofgrey I concur in full, forthwith, etc., etc.
December 19th, 2011
@beautifulthing

Russian Interregator #1: Why are you here?

Emmett Fitz-Hume: Why am I here? Why are you here? Why is anybody here? I think it was Jean-Paul Sartre who once said... how do you spell spell Sartre?
[soldier slaps him]

Emmett Fitz-Hume: Owww... and let that be a lesson to you.
December 19th, 2011
As soon as I seen this title I knew it was you. Didn't even have to look
December 19th, 2011
Oh...and another BIG question to give me an idea...

Who is interested in a copy?
December 19th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Sure.....I guess.
December 19th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Guess I have to if I want a signed copy :)
December 19th, 2011
@jasonbarnette I might be if there is more info and less egotistical crap in it! lol Start writing...
December 19th, 2011
yes yes yes i want to buy this NOW! also give me a shout if you want anything proofread (no charge obv!) or need any general advice on publishing-i work for a pretty big publishers here in the uk
December 19th, 2011
I would definitely order the pdf (books do not make it to Turkey easily :)! I love reading your tutorials and it would be nice to have them in an easy to access format.

Is there a way to have an active table of contents in a pdf? It would make it easier to read on Kindle, so we can skip to certain parts for better reference. Kolay gelsin or May it come easy to you :).
December 19th, 2011
Sign me up for a copy PDF and I hope you do make money on it, your tutorials are awesome.....hence your awesomeness...but I don't always have the time to read them...thats sacrilege I know...smite me Lord Shadow!!
But I want a personal message and signed hard copy as well when I'm more financial, that way when you become obscenely rich and infamous I can say I sort of knew him when he was just a mere Lord:)
Thanks Jason:)
December 19th, 2011
I'm in for a pdf
December 19th, 2011
I'm in for a hardcopy
December 20th, 2011
Good luck! Count me in for a copy.
December 20th, 2011
This is a great idea J! I'd be in for sure. One thing that I think would also be helpful is the fact of having a section on Motivation. Even with all of your wise information, there will be a time during this adventure where some will or could hit a lull. Giving pointers on how to participate in forums, getting feedback/critique for your work, but most importantly, keep discovering! It's a tough journey but realizing not just your awesomeness, but the depth of this awesome group does help keep one on pace toward completing, and even thinking of going for more. Just my 2.5cents!
December 20th, 2011
No thanks!
December 20th, 2011
i won't even dish out money for this site let alone a book for it.

so... yeah... what Trina said
December 20th, 2011
sounds great, definitely will want a copy, most likely a hard copy :)
December 20th, 2011
@peterdegraaff Wow. You summed me up pretty good. I might have to quote you in the "About the Photographer" section haha. Thanks so much, really.

@buttercup Yeah...I guess I could put Mr. Hyde to sleep and just let Dr. Jekyll work on this one!

@smevvy Whoaaa. Dropping some big titles there, huh? Thanks I'll keep you in mind! I could probably use some help in the next few days if you're not busy with the holidays.

@charsurmeli Yes, it will have an active TOC to make browsing easier just for you Charlotte! Well...I *might* have been planning that already...but you'll never know :P

@veekay Why should I write you a personal message? You'll just steal it you thief! You dirty thief! Hahaha

@g_meus Those are some good pointers. Thanks for the ideas!

@kerristephens @brumbe @minxymissk @jasehoad @dmortega @shadesofgrey @cfitzgerald @beautifulthing @bk12racing @bobg @swilde @mackena

After seeing this pop up a lot, I think I'll add a bonus for anyone who buys either the PDF or print version: a free copy of The Ups, Downs, Ins, Outs, Twists, Curves, and Fun of the 365 Project. I'll address the topics people asked above: the deal with the Popular Page, how to get followers, how to join in discussions, leaving comments, discussion of different types of photos, and much more. I want this to be separate from the other book cause I don't want people to think I'm only writing something for this site. Instead, How to Shoot 365 Photos in a Year can really be for anybody.
December 20th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Now Your Awesomeness...I told you that I was going to 'BORROW' it....MEN YOU NEVER LISTEN....tsk tsk tsk
AND now I want a leather bound, gilt edged book HAND DELIVERED BY CHRISTMAS....pretty please SIR:):)
December 20th, 2011
I would be in for a PDF :) - always up for learning more
December 20th, 2011
@beautifulthing Nothing on the movie line? You help Jason hijack one of my discussions but I try and hijack on of his and you bail on me? Ugh....un-follow
December 20th, 2011
@shadesofgrey Fool. I will cut you. With a plastic spoon.
December 20th, 2011
@jasonbarnette I thought of something else...photo size! Why would/should I want my photo to be one size in editing rather than bigger or smaller. How big (pixel wise) should I save it to print it 8x10 versus 40x52. What is the max size I can print if I really want to? Why (in plain english)?

As far as the 365 specific site goes...why only jpegs? What if someone wants to steal my photo(s)...can I do something sizewise to make them unusable if stolen, but still appear "normal" on this site? Does the site do it for me?
December 20th, 2011
@shadesofgrey Look, foo. @jasonbarnette is trying to have a sooper seerius discussion about books and stuff. This is grown folks bidness so step OFF. ;)

"Why cut him with a spoon?"
"Because it's DULL, you idiot. It'll HURT more."
December 20th, 2011
@beautifulthing @jasonbarnette I WAS trying to have a soooper seerius discuzzion about helpin noobs on 365 and yous guys had no problemz hijacken it....un follows all arounds.
December 20th, 2011
@beautifulthing Snape.

@shadesofgrey I can haz gives a shits now?
December 20th, 2011
@shadesofgrey We brought the awesome to your thread akshully. Not only did it make it a Hot Topic, but then people got mouthy with us about hijacking, thereby creating even MORE helpful hints. So stuff it. I'm unfollowing everyone in this thread BUT you.

Oh, wait.

@jasonbarnette I would totally do Snape. Not Alan Rickman. Snape. I want that to be clear.
December 20th, 2011
December 20th, 2011
Shame on my for helping your head on its path to explosion but I might be interested in a PDF, too. Mind you, I'd enjoy reading this book more if there was less "I'm awesome" and more facts in it. We all know you know your stuff, there's no need to rub it in more. Hope that doesn't come across as too mean...
December 20th, 2011
@5unflow3r @grecican - I'll join the Tina and Trina club. You lost me after you said about a spinning room...
December 20th, 2011
actually I was lost after you found the need to capitalise book in the title to this thread. Oh well oh well.
December 20th, 2011
@jannaellen Haha...yeah...I'll be putting Mr. Hyde to sleep while letting Dr. Jekyll write the book. No worries.

And, uh, maybe people need to take just a little more time to actually read the plain English words I wrote above. I didn't ask "Who doesn't want a book cause I love getting an individual notification every time somebody doesn't want what I'm spending four weeks writing?" Nope. Pretty sure I simply asked "Who wants one?" So...if you don't want one...let your fingers walk somewhere else. Yeah. Thanks.
December 20th, 2011
you said you think you're gonna write a book for ALL of us... and a few of us said no thanks. i think it is you who don't understand no English, mothafucka!

you wanna dance? we can take this shit outside, honky... mmmhmm

*takes off gold hoop earrings*
December 20th, 2011
@grecican @jasonbarnette AAAWWWW shizzle.

btw Jason, I was kidding when I said I guess.....I do want one so hope your feelers aren't hurt anymore.
December 20th, 2011
@shadesofgrey I have feelers? I'm supposed to have feelers? Why has nobody ever told me this?!?
December 20th, 2011
@jasonbarnette yes please PDF will you let us know when its ready?
December 20th, 2011
seriously???
December 20th, 2011
I'm too busy to read all these and comment right now but wanted to say I think this is an AWESOME (what else would you expect?) idea. Would happily pay $10. Must include section on why not to pay any attention to PP.
December 20th, 2011
Sounds great, I think I'll wait for the ripped copy on generictorrentsite.com, though on the other hand will it be a better investment than another pro year?

Damn, my head hurts now ;-)
December 20th, 2011
@reba I think I'm gonna include a separate, free guide for anyone who buys a copy of either the PDF or print version for how to use the 365 Project, including how the Popular Page is a joke. ;)

@pete21 Shame, shame. I'd been waiting for someone to say that but I never thought you'd be the first!
December 20th, 2011
@jasonbarnette well so was I.

I'm now so shamed that I've added your awesome book to my Christmas list. Lets hope Father Christmas is running late this year :-)
December 20th, 2011
@pete21 Haha...yeah...Santa and I aren't exactly getting along right now. I'm not sure he'll transport gifts containing my name without clearance. Yeah...I'm not getting clearance haha.
December 20th, 2011
^_-
December 21st, 2011
Tom
What I'd like to see:

- In the section that convinces me to always shoot on manual, include side by side pictures of a photo shot with manual settings vs. what the camera's automagic settings give you. Maybe examples from DSLR where there are lots of settings and P&S where you have less control.

- Sample photo(s) for each of the ideas as added inspiration.

Yeah, I'd probably come up with $10 for a PDF version.
December 21st, 2011
@jasonbarnette - sorry... didn't mean to waste your time. Apologies.
December 21st, 2011
@beautifulthing Snape?? With that iccky wobbly double chin? Seriously?? I'd do that crazy cat that iz takin pichus before I'd do him! Just sayin'....
December 21st, 2011
@tabbycat Tee hee! :)
December 21st, 2011
Yes to PDF.
December 22nd, 2011
I would just like to use my reply to wish everyone a merry and happy, healthy and joyous Christmas and New Years!!!
December 22nd, 2011
ohh yeah signed copy please :) this sounds - as you quite rightly say - AWESOME. lots of example photos would be lovely :) maybe some more psychological advice too? i'm sure even the most professional photographers, the ones with the most adept technical knowledge, run out of ideas or simply lose momentum to take a picture every single day - it can really wear you out mentally! so it might be nice to include a section on why this site is so good for you, tips for keeping up with it and so on. good luck jason!
December 22nd, 2011
use several people to do your proof reading. make sure they know what they are doing. don't ask friends because they will be NICE to you. have a good editor with a red pen. if you first draft comes back clean, get yourself another editor. remove you big, fat ego from the book and you will have a good book.
December 22nd, 2011
i agree with @dakotakid35 about a section for shooting in manual, the comparisons part he mentioned sound really cool.

and i think i'd buy your book! tell us when you publish it.
December 22nd, 2011
@dakotakid35 That is one DISadvantage of having pro gear: I can't shoot side-by-side comparison of what auto modes and manual modes would do since my cameras only have manual modes. However, the manual section will include plenty of sample photography of how to do it manually, so you could try the same setup and shoot in an automatic mode then compare with the samples.

I don't think I could include a sample photo for every idea. That's 501 photos! Uhm...that would make the book about 300 pages I think? I'll be including about 3-4 sample photos on each page of about 30 ideas, I think that's how it will work out.

@tabbycat @beautifulthing I know, right? Snape? Seriously? Then again...Shelly is kinda awesome and for the most part I agree with her tastes :P

@izzymathie Yes, Izzy, you get a signed copy hehe! I'm including a section on "Why Be a 365 Shutterbug" in which I include reasons to do a 365 project, tips on finishing, and a section on staying motivated. I'm also writing a separate guide book for this site that I'll give out for free to anyone who buys a copy of the book!

@catsmeowb Just you wait and see! This book is entirely written by Dr. Jekyll as I have put Mr. Hyde to sleep ;) I have several wonderful people proofreading and helping. Thanks for the tips!

@rleonard Right now I'm aiming for publishing the PDF version next Wednesday. The book version take a couple of days to process through through Amazon, so probably just right after the New Year.
December 22nd, 2011
Yes - I kinda am. A little. Sometimes. On good days. When the moon is full.
December 22nd, 2011
@jasonbarnette - awesome! can't wait.
