I am looking to buy my first dslr shortly after Christmas, and I was thinking of getting this one:

Since I'm new to the dslr world, though, I thought I'd ask your thoughts on the matter! I have done some comparing and research, but there's nothing better than direct feedback from people who actually use them. I went in the direction of Canon because I currently own one of their p&s, and I'm very comfortable with the controls/settings/functions. I've also previously used a canon dslr and I had no trouble getting the hang of it.
What I'd like to know is... is this a good option? Do you know of a better one for relatively inexpensive (my budget is about $500-600 Canadian)? If you own one, what are it's advantages/disadvantages?

There is nothing wrong with the canon line-up... if you know and use the brand go pick it up... the only 'trouble' I see you running into is LBA (Lens buying Addiction) where you budget of $500 is NOT near enough... you could spend 4x that on a good 85mm 1.2.... enough the new toy... big step-up from a P&S

I LOVE my Rebel!! I have an xti that's a few years old now, I suppose it is what the T3 is now. In my opinion its a fantastic step into the dslr world. I think the canon menu system is much simpler than the nikon.... If your used to a canon, you should have no problem with a more powerful dslr canon.

I can't really see any disadvantages to the camera other than I wish I had more lenses, I only have the one I got with the camera 18-55. I really want a 50mm, maybe a longer telephoto and one day a lensbaby.
