The Artist Challenge

April 23rd, 2012
A while back there used to be something called the Artist Challenge which ran more or less weekly with each winner choosing an artist to inspire the next competition. It's been brought up again today by a few people in Janna's WWYD thread.

Anyway, firstly I'd like to say that I quite often missed the links for the competition so I'm suggesting we create a user specifically for the competition that people who are interested can follow and so always get the relevant info about the artist theme, dates and voting. It could be called simply "The Artist Challenge" and each host could pass on the account password (which could be changed by each successive person if necessary). Obviously it could still be announced in Latest Topics with a reminder that you can actually "follow" as well.

And Jani mentioned two differing approaches to the competition earlier. One, creating an original image based on the artists style and two, recreating an original piece of art.
I'd always go for the first but don't see why both approaches couldn't be embraced.

Anyway this is just a couple of ideas to get the ball rolling, please feel free to add, develop, junk as you wish...
April 23rd, 2012
Can't wait forthe first one
April 23rd, 2012
I am glad that the artist challenge will be back. I have also missed it.
April 23rd, 2012
Exciting stuff, count me in! I like the idea of recreating a specific piece of art, although the other method is also appealing. : )
April 23rd, 2012
If you make it a 'user' how can we avoid it getting in the top 20 if it really takes off? I can imagine there will be a lot of comments/questions.
April 23rd, 2012
@lorraineb It's ok, you just don't fav it. Not that anyone would anyway!
April 23rd, 2012
@rich57 Good point ; )
April 23rd, 2012
Great idea to create a 'user' for this purpose ! I always miss the links to the challenges too... The 'user' could fav the winners of each challenge, for easy access later.

I think both approaches to the challenge are just fine and I don't see a need to do separate challenges for recreations and originals.
April 23rd, 2012
@janmaki yeah was just thinking "fav" the winners! Like a gallery! Will creat a user shortly
April 23rd, 2012
@peterdegraaff @janmaki @lorraineb @egad Ok I think this could work, I've created a user for the challenge. I'm suggesting Peter hosts the first round of the Artist Challenge Reborn with his suggestion Max Dupain. So Peter, set it up via the disussion threads and we'll figure out how to get it on the user too. Oh and follow the user too http://365project.org/theartistchallenge/365
April 23rd, 2012
@rich57 Cute profile ; )
April 23rd, 2012
@rich57 Happy to do it if everyone lose is oknwith that. @lorraineb @janmaki @egad
April 23rd, 2012
@peterdegraaff Yes, yes, do it, I need something to do after tomorrow (exam) to get me back to 'normality' : ))
April 23rd, 2012
@peterdegraaff @lorraineb @rich57 @janmaki Yay great idea, I'm in, fav the winners is also a great idea. Both approaches to the challenge are fine as far as i'm concerned. look forward to it!!
April 23rd, 2012
I tend to agree that your work should be inspired and not just an alteration of one of their exisitng works. I also like the idea of following a person, but lately I am the worst follower in the world. I always wanted to win the challenge so I could select

How do you enter a piece?
I took a photo in 21st April which was inspired by an artist's work. I posted it today about 15 minutes ago.
I then looked down the recent submissions and came across this challenge!
My photo is
April 23rd, 2012
I don't know that it's necessary to create a special link. If it's done weekly it should show up in the challenges thread - right? I think whatever the original rules were, worked.
Is there anyway to find out who won the last artist challenge (this I'm sure is why you are thinking about a special account).

My suggestion:
Perhaps if we can find the tag link - let's re-post those entries and vote on everyone who entered. If there is a tie we vote on a tie breaker. It will be that person's responsibility to start the next challenge. If you entered the last challenge you have the link by clicking on your tag. Will someone just take the initiative and post that link and copy the links to vote?

That is my suggestion.
April 23rd, 2012
This is the link to the last artist challenge - I think.
@cmc1200 Did you select winners to vote from?
http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/11242/artist-challenge-ben-heine
April 23rd, 2012
@rich57 @peterdegraaff This looks like the last winner of the artist challenge, i couldn't find anything from then on.
April 23rd, 2012
Peter VanAllen doesn't appear to be on 365 regularly
2nd place was Jen @fungirlslim So I think we should ask her to start the next one.
If she doesn't respond within 2 days let's ask the third place which was Tiara @tbats22

What do you think?
April 23rd, 2012
@rich57 Going by this its looks like we need one person to run the challenge, instead of passing it on to the winner. I still agree with using the new profile too, as you say Richard its a reminder in your profile that the challenge is on!
April 23rd, 2012
Is this a problem that happens regularly or was this a rare occasion?
I like the idea of the winner being the one who handles the next one.
Just my opinion.
April 23rd, 2012
Why don't we vote - pass it on to winner or Artist Challenge Moderator
April 23rd, 2012
Maybe it's just me but I did find it wasn't always easy to find the link to the artists challenges, I found I used to have to scroll down the discussions quite a way to find it, was it because it wasn't a popular challenge, so therefore got further down the list? I think it's a great idea to be able to 'follow' artist challenge.
April 23rd, 2012
Didn't we do this every two weeks instead of 1 week? Perhaps if we did it weekly instead of bi-weekly we could find it easier? Just a thought?
I do think we should ask the 2nd place person to select an artist.
April 23rd, 2012
@myhrhelper Hi Katy. The idea is the same as always. Winner chooses the theme. I think I jumped the gun in assuming this challenge had been defunct for a long time! Yes the previous winner should have the option of choosing the next one. @peterdegraaff you better hold your fire! I created a user to follow simply because Iike others I easily miss the links on the latest discussion thread and the artist challenge has been fairly ramshackle regarding when it starts. We would still do everything the old way just that if you so desire you could "follow" the challenge so any info goes to your desktop or is clickable via your "friends" list. Of course it's not necessary to follow but I know it'll make it easier for me!
@lesleyallen
April 23rd, 2012
@myhrhelper Richard @rich57 took his time to sort this challenge/problem out so the least we can do is wait for his thoughts on your ideas. More haste, less speed as they say ; ))
April 23rd, 2012
How do you do it and is it possible to do it with film which I am using this month? I am interested if I knew how it was done.
April 23rd, 2012
So 1st choice Jen (@fungirlslim) or 2nd Tiara (@tbats22) to choose the next artist, its a shame we can private message them, @rich57 I'll add a link to Jens last upload. We'll see where it goes from there. : )
April 23rd, 2012
Jen
Hi so happy someone has taken the initiative of reinstating this and I'm in.. However I've had a tough couple of weeks and I am playing catchup do can we pass this to @tbats22 or if not Peter?? Sorry to opt out, but want to see it get going whilst I catch up.. Hope everyone understands..
April 23rd, 2012
@fungirlslim OK i'll message Tiara, thanks for letting us know so quickly : )
April 23rd, 2012
@rich57 I suggest if Tiara cant do it we hand it over to Peter, @peterdegraaff at least we've tried!!
April 23rd, 2012
@lorraineb Sounds like a plan to me!
April 23rd, 2012
Not that I'm playing, but, having done this one in the past, can you make it clear at the beginning what the rules are? I was fairly unimpressed for one challenge when the rules at the start were given as interpreting some artist's vision but then on short-listing results were judged on the photographs that looked most as if the artist could have taken them back in the 1930s or whenever, not in that style as updated to today. If I'd known that's what they were to be judged on I'd have taken a picture to match those rules.
April 23rd, 2012
My opinion for what it's worth

Out of the top winners June @aromatic was 4th and Katy @grammyn was 5th. I think we should try for the top 5 first.
I know Katy is a 365 regular.
April 23rd, 2012
YAY. I'm excited for this again! I love artist challenges
April 23rd, 2012
@myhrhelper @fungirlslim @rich57 @lorraineb @janmaki @shanne @egad @lesleyallen @la_photographic @andrewrome365 @brumbe

I would be pleased. If not happy, if one of finalists from the last round were to host. In terms of rules, Jan Maki has highlighted the two distinct approaches that are generally taken. If most people are comfortable with this then it should not be too controversial. Clearly the approach taken will depend on artist selected. Some artists leave lots of scope and will create wide degrees of interpretation while others will narrow down. My suggestion of Dupain was probably a little self interested, but he is an iconic Australin photographer who worked in B&W film mostly around pools and the waters edge. Given that some are working in film at moment it would be open to them as well as those using digital. It is also perhaps a good time of year for those in both hemispheres for this. Maybe I will need to win instead, but also love still lifes.

Anyway, it is very early in morning here and need to decide if I am going for a walk, will the sun come up, but more importantly what camera to take and what film.

I really want to see the challenges happen again so it up to you, not me.
April 23rd, 2012
@rich57 Big thank Rich for setting up. Maybe you should host for first time around reborn
April 23rd, 2012
@brumbe @fungirlslim You may like this video I made which features some Mondrain and other artists at the Kroller Muller Musem. I took photos and my wife filmed, and i then combined. Meldoy spent a lot of time their in tears from the emotion of seeing all these fabulous works of art that she had only ever seen in books when she was art school. It is probably the best museum i have ever been too!

@rich57 @peterdegraaff

Peter can do it. I haven't been able to be on all weekend and won't get much time this week either
April 23rd, 2012
@peterdegraaff I think it makes sense that Peter does it. I hope I didn't come across as difficult - I think it would be great to see it started again.

I never entered one of these but I was tempted to since they seem like they would be fun to do and great to learn the various photography artists.
April 23rd, 2012
@peterdegraaff Ok mate, it's up to you. I'm happy to step in if not! Reckon it'd be good to strike while the iron's hot and Dupain seems a good choice. I'd say that it should be open to film and digital to encourage as many people as possible. There's already nearly 30 people following the challenge!
April 23rd, 2012
@peterdegraaff @rich57 @myhrhelper @tbats22 @shanne @lorraineb @janmaki @brumbe @fungirlslim
Soooo Peter and Dupain it is then, just need to clarify the 'rules'.
April 23rd, 2012
@rich57 @lesleyallen @tbats22 OK. Was thinking about rules and think should be a photo taken within time frame of challenge. Should also go for only two weeks. Allows a quicker turnover and more people opportunities to have a go
April 23rd, 2012
@peterdegraaff @rich57 I hate to be a pain in the ass, okay, I am quite comfortable being a pain. I guess I am thinking that if I were to make an improvement to the artist challenge I would encourage others to do more than just the popular photos and to look into how their style adopted, changed or was multi dimensional. I just looked at Dupain and after I excluded loads of du pain photos of bread, I could see that he had a definite style, but did more than just the photos at the beach, but I really liked his traffic and urban shots. I always got a bit frustrated at some of the challenges because it seemed people only appreciated the popular pieces and ignored the whole piece of work. I just wish there was a way to encourage examining the whole piece of work. Okay, off to go pick up the first roll of film from the Zenit. I think I may just have rambled in here without getting to the point, of trying to encourage people to go past the standard and explore the whole body of the artists work. Oh and when does the challenge start because i am all set on what I think I am going to take. See ramble ramble ramble.
April 23rd, 2012
Hurray!! I'm so glad the decision is made : )) I totally agree on the 'photo taken in the time frame' too : ))
April 23rd, 2012
@brumbe I understand where you are coming from. I like the breadth of his work which have seen at retrospectives, but really like in sense the b&w-ness of it in the same way as Adams had a certain B&Wness of his own. We will need to encourage a look at the breadth, not just du pain of bread, and you are not a pain at all.
April 23rd, 2012
@smapp I'm pretty certain you kicked the whole shebang off last year. Do you want to add anything to the discussion?
April 23rd, 2012
@brumbe haha good to see you're raring to go. Must go and look at his traffic/urban shots as I'm 100 miles from the beach!
April 24th, 2012
OK, here's something a bit whiney. I did an artist challenge once..it was a favorite artist and I took about 5 photos for it. Which is a lot for any challenge from me. Anyway, when the final photos where chosen, it seemed that the person who chose the artist didn't understand their work at all! This particular photographer's calling card is that all of his photos . though BW, had pure white and pure black in them. The photos chosen for final 5 were all gray. I didn't care that mine weren't chosen, I cared that the 5 finalists just were not right. OK, my whining is done. :-D
April 24th, 2012
@5unflow3r I think that will vary from challenge host to challenge host. Some do quick artist selection and and others really do research first. In my opinion, I agree with you that they should have known the artist better but I think it will happen since we really do want the winner of the challenge to have the ability to choose his/her best. If I ever win an artist challenge (I doubt it since I'm too much of a rookie and learning) I will take your advice to study the artist I select so I can recognize the style similarities.

So @peterdegraaff when are you going to start and make it official???
April 24th, 2012
@myhrhelper Well that's what I'm hoping--that people will learn more about the artist's style and stuff, especially the person who will chooses the artist and the finalists. I figured that this is absolutely the time to speak up since we are pondering how to make this challenge better.... The artist in question is fairly mainstreamed compared to some of the more obscure ones that were done, so to me, that made it even more sad that the finalists works did not reflect the artist at all. I don't expect to ever win an artist challenge, but I do like to try to learn from someone else's style-- I do think that the whole purpose is to learn about and be inspired by someone else's work.
April 24th, 2012
@5unflow3r @myhrhelper @peterdegraaff @brumbe I think the points you make are valid and maybe the host could display a selection of what they consider to be the artists core work in the challenge post (this has poss always been the way but I'm not sure). I did go back and find the very first artist challenge and this is what was laid out as rules/guide lines

Here is the challenge. Make a photograph based on a famous artist. (Feel free to go beyond just copying an artist's work) The first artist we will use as inspiration is Vincent van Gogh. The next artist challenge will have a different artist.

Five finalist's work will be chosen and posted. The 365 community will choose a winner from this group of five by voting.

To participate please include "theme-vincent" as a tag, and a single sentence describing how your photograph is related to the artist's work.

I like the "single sentence describing how your photograph is related to the artist's work" idea but then I also felt that for me the challenge was already hard enough without having to justify it! I might be wrong but I always felt like the challenge was struggling along whether it be down to people simply not knowing about it or finding it hard to get a good picture together. anyway I think my point is that I hope between all interested parties we can make the challenge stimulating, relevant, long-lasting, attractive and most of all fun. Also maybe we should be allowed (or I should say hosts should be) to choose an artist previously covered.

April 24th, 2012
@rich57 I liked the challenge because it was taking a painters work and being inspired by photography. For a while it was getting to be quite a bit of photographers and it became less appealing because I did not want to just do a take on another photographer. I think I liked using the creative push of another art form into photograph. I think the artist also got a hint obscure at some points. But not saying we should not do photographers, but have variety. I wish we had a list of artists we would want to see and just have them so there is a really different way to think every two weeks. Gosh I really do want everything.
April 25th, 2012
@brumbe yeah I think having a mix of artistic disciplines would be good. I'm also for keeping it easy/mainstream (not really the words I'm looking for) so that more people will feel like joining in. Trouble is, staying true to the 365 spirit of winner hosts/chooses kind of goes against that. Also, are you suggesting a list of several artists that people can work to each fortnight rather than one specific artist? or just a list that the host chooses from?
April 25th, 2012
I think a list of who to choose, and we leave the winner to decide the next 3 or 5 people to vote for. But they can always make recommendations of artists to add.
April 25th, 2012
I like the old method. Let the winner select the next artist. I really don't see a problem with doing it the way we have been doing it. The main problem we had was the person who won didn't carry the torch and he didn't start the next challenge. I think we should just get it started again with the same rules as in the past. Only entries taken during the time period will be considered. Yes, some winners will pick the top 5 based on what they like while others perhaps should have won because they understood the artist better, but hey they won, that is their choice. Hopefully the next winner will look at the style - it is art and will always be somewhat up to interpretation.

That's my opinion.
April 25th, 2012
@myhrhelper Agree with you there Kathy! and I just want to get on with it too : )
April 25th, 2012
Jen
Can I just comment on the timeframe.. previously I gave an 8 day window for the images to be takn and uploaded, then picked the top 5 with 3 days for voting, which gave 2 days for the winner to setup the next one and keep it to a fortnight. If it runs for two weeks, you have to consider the voting time and the next setup..
I am confused though.. who is selecting and where is it being posted..??
April 25th, 2012
@fungirlslim Peter is setting up a new challenge to start in the next couple of days. Good point about the voting thing and timeframe.
April 25th, 2012
@lorraineb @brumbe @myhrhelper Yeah I don't think anyone is changing the set-up just yet, if at all. I think it's just good to hear a few different ideas. Also I'm just the guy who started the thread and wants to see the challenge up and running. But at times like these (after a break) it's a good thing to try and see how we could possibly improve the challenge. I may have got it wrong but I felt the challenge was under-appreciated before. Or at least under-subscribed.
April 25th, 2012
Jen
@rich57 Thanks for update.. think you did a great job getting this going again.. just look at the interest.. well done!
April 25th, 2012
Jen
@peterdegraaff Loved your video mentioned above., thank you for sharing.. loved the jazz too.. gave me a quiet 5 minutes!
April 25th, 2012
@brumbe @myhrhelper @lorraineb @fungirlslim @rich57 @5unflow3r Just catching up with these posts as went to "our nation's capital" today for a photo shoot with TJ. Agree with all of the above and will take this into account. I agree that it should not be just about photographers, but also include painters, sculpture or even a style exemplified by an artist as a starting point: for example still life. Agree that should be not to hard. Noted about time frame Jen. I think it is important to get it started. Having a day off tomorrow so will write up, and post Thursday evening our time if everyone is OK with that, and then some reminders. Trina Paula, I think I remember the example you are talking about which was highly contrasted b&w. Big thanks to Richard for setting up user and will get head around this. Jan Make made some interesting points around differentiation which will include in another thread.

Hope everyone is OK with this.
April 25th, 2012
@fungirlslim glad you enjoyed. the music was a great find
April 25th, 2012
@peterdegraaff You just go ahead with the challenge via a thread as usual and I'll launch the user version and hand it over to you. I'm still thinking how it'll work. But at the least it'll work as a reminder for all who are interested.
April 25th, 2012
@rich57 @peterdegraaff After reading all these posts I had an idea.

Passing along the password/changing it seems to be labor intensive and for someone paranoid like me, intrusive. IF and I say IF I ever won an artists challenge, I would not want someone (the last winner) I barely know (most likely to happen) to have my personal email, nor would I really want to create an email specifically to recieve the password and then send it on a fortnight later. I am not saying some person would just use/abuse my email, but I don't outright trust everyone either. There are a few people on here that have my personal email but I vetted them and decided that I can trust them....My suggestion is to have an account moderator who maintains the fav's and communicates with the current winner. This minimizes the confusion, however, someone still has personal email address, however it is a known "entity" rather than a random user. The rules will stay the same for each challenge, so there is no missing parts or changing parts due to copying and pasting, thus less confusion. This also means a BIG commitment from the moderator, and I personally don't have the time to dedicate to this and I wouldn't expect anyone else to dedicate their time...unless completely voluntary. Just my opinion on how to possibly make it better.
April 25th, 2012
@shadesofgrey Fair point, I was going to pass the password on via a comment on an old photo so avoiding email addresses but on the other hand I'm happy to look after the account for the time being. It isn't the main outlet for the challenge that will be the discussion boards as before, the user account is just an added extra that gets the chosen artisrt/dates/voting out to whoever wants to follow. As I've said before I reckon I missed at least half of the challenges due to not keeping my eye on the latest discussion board all day, every day (still can't quite use 24/7). Also I seem to have got really burnt out with commenting in year 3 so this might be something I can do and get re-energised again. I'll also commit to not just leaving it mid- or post-challenge and arrange a proper succession if and when it's needed or wanted. Does that sound ok to everyone? I'll just repeat I won't be running the challenge, just looking after the user account, the host of each challenge is in charge.
@peterdegraaff @fungirlslim @lorraineb @myhrhelper @brumbe @5unflow3r
April 25th, 2012
@rich57 I think that will minimize the confusion! Thanks for letting me bend your ear! I think it is a good idea to make the point about the account being a log or hub for the challenge, rather than the driving force......and that each winner is responsible for the next challenge!
April 25th, 2012
@rich57 Sounds great Richard, and thanks for re-starting the challenge : ))
April 25th, 2012
@rich57 @shadesofgrey sounds great. Thought that the user could also post sample of an artists work.
April 25th, 2012
This sounds like a fun challenge. Looking forward to participating.
April 25th, 2012
@peterdegraaff @shadesofgrey I'm thinking the commentary will be a straight copy and paste of what you and other hosts post to discussion thread. And yeah need a pic which could be an example of the artist. Seems the best idea. Also should include a link to the user account on the original thread created by host.
April 25th, 2012
@rich57 Sounds great to me....maybe keep the link in the copy and past portion of the blurb...or is that what you meant?
April 25th, 2012
@rich57 @shadesofgrey I have found several good links which provide examples of work and style which will post in announcement. It had also occurred to me that perhaps the finalists could be short listed by a group not participating in challenge, rather than just not an individual. Might be cumbersome though
April 26th, 2012
@shadesofgrey @peterdegraaff you do know that you can Flickr mail? knowing that all three of you (including Rich) are on Flickr. Little mail box at top right hand corner, gives you the option of mailing people messages privately. It gets delivered to your e-mail account. Keeps your home e-mail private but allows you to communicate with others on Flickr
April 26th, 2012
@shanne That is a great idea, however I was thinking along the lines of the future challenges, if someone I didn't know wanted to email me a password, I would be hesitant to give it to them as it has my real name in it....this way at least only one person would have it and as he has been here for a bit, seems pretty trustworthy, at least to me ;) I don't know, somehow makes me feel better when it is really the same thing, just with someone most of us have had some interaction with, versus someone I have never even talked to....JMO
April 26th, 2012
@shadesofgrey yes, totally agree, it is sensible to be careful in this very public place - which was partly why the suggestion you could use Flickr mail which doesn't give your name, just your name on there, and allows you to communicate privately
May 11th, 2012
@peterdegraaff I am lost! I participated in the first artis challenge ac-dupain, but where is the second challenge? Where do I find the link to it etc??? Thanks
May 11th, 2012
@shirljess Hi Shirley, Gary won and will be starting the next challenge early next week when he returns from vacation. Are following the Artist Challenge User? If so, you'll get all the info on your dashboard as soon as anything happens!
May 12th, 2012
@rich57 awesome, thanks for the update. Yes, I am following, but had not seen anything so thought maybe i missed it.. I think I need to weed out some of the people I am following I think I have too many peeps and I can't keep up with all the posts.
