New Artist Challenge - Max Dupain

April 26th, 2012
Welcome to the new Artist Challenge and hopefully the first of many more to come. Many thanks to everyone that contributed to the discussion thread, and especial thanks to Richard Tyson (@rich57), who started the thread and established a user account. If you haven’t done so already follow the user account http://365project.org/theartistchallenge/365

The challenge is to make a photograph based on iconic Australian photographer Max Dupain.

He was a photographer of life, culture and architecture who worked in black & white. He is most often remembered for the photographs he took defining beach culture, Sunbaker (1937) but his work extended far beyond capturing images of care free existence into the nature, street life, architecture and the documentation of urbanity. An example of this is the post-War image of a Meat Queue (1946) taken in a more naturalistic style that captured “a moment of everyday interaction…”

“Dupain’s philosophy could be summed up in two words, simplicity and directness. With this in mind, Dupain remained an adherent of black and white photography. He felt that colour was restricting in its objectivity and that nothing was left to interpretation.”

The following sites provide an insight into the breadth of Dupain’s works and style:

A question asked about the artist challenge posed by Jan Maki (@janmaki) is: should it be more about creating an original image based on the techniques and style of the artist... or, is it about trying to recreate an existing piece of art. The answer is both!

The artist chosen for this challenge has style will provide a breadth of scope for participation by those using film, digital or processing techniques.

The challenge will start now and close at midnight on 6 May 2012 (GMT). Finalists will be posted asap to allow for voting, and the winner will host the next challenge. Photo's entered should be taken during the period of challenge.

To enter the challenge simply tag your photo ac-dupain

Fantastic tribute photo @peterdegraaff
April 26th, 2012
@peterdegraaff Thanks for including me Peter. I don't really do well on these as a rule. I have limited abilities with my camera that sometimes set me back. But, I will mull this over in my head and see if I might be able to do my own take on his work. I certainly wouldn't be able to copy it!!
April 26th, 2012
@peterdegraaff Thanks for thinking of me Peter. I have all weekend to work on this! If I think anything I take looks presentable I will post it. Should be interesting,to say the least!!
April 26th, 2012
@peterdegraaff - Thank you for the invitation Peter!!
April 26th, 2012
Thank you Peter! I have never entered an artist challenge - I'm usually very intimidated by all the great photographers but inspite of that I think I will give this a go.
April 26th, 2012
Hmmmm what to do, what to do!?
April 26th, 2012
@peterdegraaff Fabulous! Thanks for posting and thanks to @rich57 for setting up the account! Not sure I can do Max Dupain justice, but shall try!!
April 27th, 2012
@peterdegraaff Thank you for including me, Peter! I'll give it a go!
April 27th, 2012
@peterdegraaff Thanks for including me :)
April 27th, 2012
@peterdegraaff Sorry to ask a stupid question, Peter... Do they want similar black and whites or really close facsimiles of what he's done? I might be able to imitate his style but I can't give my own copy of what he's done. If you know what I mean.
April 27th, 2012
@marlboromaam The idea is to look at links which will give you a feel for style, tonality, and subject matter: which is fairly broad. It can be then done as either an attempt to produce something derivately based on a pre-existing photo, for example replicating a photo of a sun baker or people queuing. Alternatively the style can be taken to produce something completely new which I think of as more of a homage (said with French accent). Sometimes for example we see dark contrasts landscapes in b&w and we think they are done in the style of Ansell Adams, because they remind us of his work. I hope this makes it easier
