I've been having fun with @olivetreeann's 30 Days in June challenge, but the month is almost over!
I did some thinking and put together another challenge for July, inspired by @teamoliver. The idea of this one is to make patterns in your project's July 'calendar' view, so it has weekly themes:
1st July - Star
2nd-8th July - Rainbow;
2/7 = red,
3/7 = orange,
4/7 = yellow,
5/7 = green,
6/7 = light blue,
7/7 = dark blue,
8/7 = violet/purple - so at the end of the week, the thumbnails will make a rainbow in your calendar view :)
9th-15th July - Numbers
9/7 - one
10/7 - two
11/7 - three
12/7 - four
13/7 - five
14/7 - six
15/7 - seven
16th-22nd July - lines
(horizontal, vertical or wiggly - but it needs to join up across the pics!)
Take pics with a line running across them at the same place - bottom third, top third or middle, or wiggling it's way across the week
23rd-29th July - B&W shapes
You can choose the same shape every day, or a different shape - the idea is to have some sort of unison between your pics for the week...
30th July - thumbnail (why not have a thumbnail of your thumbnail! :) )
31st July - Star (to match with 1st July)
Of course, it is completely up to you how you interpret the challenge words - just remember the idea is to make your calendar view pretty!
As the thumbnails are square, it might be easier to match if you set the aspect ratio on your camera to 1:1, but you can still join in if you take 'normal' shots - they might just be a bit more tricky to match up.
Tag pics 'thumbnail-challenge' if you want to share them with other challengers!
@alia_801 Sounds tricky, but I like the idea. How do I set the aspect ratio to 1:1. I have no idea? Will have a look and see what I can find on my Canon 50d.
@stuckinoz I'm not sure how different your 50d is from my powershot G12 - probably quite a bit! On my camera the aspect ratio is right there under the general function settings. (I did look for an online manual or instructions for you but didn't have much luck). Just do what I do and keep pressing things until it does what you want :)
@nicolecampbell@sparkle Hoorah! It's good to have challenge buddies! @bobfoto I hope so... challenges don't always turn out in reality the same way they look in my head - though usually things work out ok :)
@alia_801 You are wonderful at coming up with new challenges. I may not participate often because I have trouble with them, but I admire your ability to be so creative
Cool I'll give it a go - is there a problem if I cant post anything for the first few days - I'm at home - immobilized by a knee injury and my phone won't let me upload - should be able to organize a computer by at least the 10th - I love the rainbow idea in particular - and I need the discipline! Lol
@herussell I'm glad you like it :) Feel free to take occasional pics for the challenge if you want to join in - you don't have to do them all!
@kittikat It's no problem at all :) Upload the pics when you can... I find challenges make 365 much easier - they take the pressure off thinking what to photograph. I've been doing them non-stop for over a year now :)
It is a good idea although I don't know if I could do it as am a bit confused - when you say star for the 1st & 31st July what do you mean - is it something like a Christmas decoration? Also for the numbers on 9th - 15th July is it actual numbers you want or is it something like 1 flower on 9th, 2 birds on 10th etc? If I knew a bit more about this then I could do it as well as the different settings on my new camera. Thanks.
@la_photographic Hi Laura, welcome to the fun! The thing with challenges is that the words are usually open to your interpretation, so you can find anything that says 'star' to you for days 1/31. Likewise, with the numbers you can find one thing on the first day, two on the next, or get pictures of the numbers from signs, numberplates... or find natural shapes that look like the numbers - it's your project so you can do the project however you like!
@alia_801@olivetreeann - i never saw this before this morning; i had to look for it from the old discussion pages. i see that it was posted on the 25th but i've been looking for it before then and it didn't even show up on my dashboard. anyhow, i found it and i'm in. i don't understand much how the third week (lines) should be, but i'll take your lead and see how it goes. july already!
@summerfield I'm thinking on that third week of either verticals or wavy. I don't think I could get one single line running through 7 days with my p&s. But verticals or wavy lines I'm pretty sure I could keep them going with no problem. The one that's going to be hard for me is my thumbnail. My fingers are narly thanks to my arthritis and I'm pretty hard on my hands so I don't do my nails or anything like that. It's not going to be a pretty picture!
@olivetreeann - i agree with you, ann - kind of hard to be connecting the vertical lines though as it is hard to get one single line through the 7 pics. as for the thumbnail, it didn't occur to me that alia was actually calling for the real thumbnail. what i have in mind is to take a photo of the screen showing all the thumbnails. hahaha! in which case we're on the same boat. although of course, we can ETSOOI it
@danig - there's an ETSOOI challenge going on and it's on its 4th edition or so already. it was started by in honour of mary beth dailey @espyetta who likes to process her pics to death. ETSOOI stands for EDITING THE S*** OUT OF IT :-)
This sounds very interesting and fun and i also just finished olivetreeann's 30 days in June ...my only Question is ..With the rainbow colors are we to just take a complete thumbnail of the color...???
@alia_801 i would like to join this challenge i just have one question and it is stated above .. i need to know this before i start so i completley understand the challenge!!
@ellimae - I think you can interpret this however you want. I thought the thumbnail month view would look really cool if each of the colors were pretty much that color. For example, on the blue day, take a picture that is a combination of different blues, like... the blue sky with blue water or blue-ish grass.
@pjonas Thank you so much Patty and I was thinking that made sense to see all of the rainbow's colors in one week but i didnt know if it was supposed to be like say...a picture of my grandaughter with a red shirt on or to just fill the frame with the one single color. Sorry to sound so difficult but i like to follow directions to the T part of my Type A personality! lol!!..can you clarify this a little more for me..Because i know i can get a picture of a Blue Sky but maybe not near blue water? I guess you are saying as long as everything in the thumbnail is blue that is all that matters ? correct? @alia_801
@ellimae
I'm thinking it would be more like filling the frame with one color each day - maybe different textures or shades? For tomortow's "red" I am gping to try to get a close up of a red rose.
Mind you... I might have totally misunderstood the challenge, but... That's okay, right?!
Think of how cool the month view will be - the whole second week will look lika a rainbow!
@pjonas Great Patty and Thank you for that interpretation and example I am up to snuff now!!! I cant wait to see the rainbow as it is one of my favorite things to see!! :)
@ellimae Sorry for the delay replying - I only get to check 365 once a day - Patty J summed up what i was thinking. My main idea for this challenge was for the thumbnail calendar view to show the patterns, e.g. the rainbow. This will probably work best if the frame is full (or almost full) of the colour. But it is always your project, so you can interpret the idea however you like :)
@pjonas Thanks for helping Ellen out! :) You're officially a challenge buddy :)
@alia_801 This looks great ... I've only done my own month-long challenge before (alphabet) so I like the idea of following someone else's ideas and seeing what other folk come up with. Thank you for suggesting it. One down, 30 to go...!
@henrir It's ok to join in whenever you like :) Welcome aboard!

I hope everyone is enjoying the challenge, and making pretty rainbows! The ones completed so far look amazing!
If you haven't had a look at the pages of all the tagged pics, now is a great time! Most of the pages are almost full of one colour, so they look amazing - and we all made them together! Search for 'thumbnail-challenge' and select 'photos' or go to this page: http://365project.org/tags/thumbnail-challenge
Try to have a look at a few of the other challengee's rainbows as they are completed! Here's a list of everyone (as far as I can tell) in no particular order:
@alia_801 Okay, I'm not sure what you mean by numbers? Like do you have to find something that is actually the @1 or something like 1 item or one person? It's very confusing for me, so I need your help.
@granny7 As far as I understand it Linda, it's open to your interpretation. You could shoot the actual number, you could shoot the amount, or if you're really creative you might figure out a way to combine the two! But it's up to you as to which way you'd like to approach it. Some people are more literal- they shoot 1 thing, then 2; others like the more abstract approach- such as using the tines on a fork for four. I'd say whichever way you decide to go with it, make it something you can do for the whole week, otherwise you might find yourself frustrated half way through. I hope this helps- most of all- Have fun!
@granny7 I know! I've been going back and forth on which way I'm going to do this all day! I have no plan for the week- so it's going to be a little hodge-podge I think! Let me know how you make out with your shots. Glad I could help!
@alia_801 Thanks for posting the Challenge link. The pages look really pretty.
@olivetreeann Ann, I'm the same way. I don't have a definite plan for this week. And I'm worried about next week too...don't know about putting wiggly lines together.
@henrir Thanks Henri- I've decided to do vertical lines next week- with varied widths. In my mind I see this as a very natural (and hopefully easy) was to match up the thumbnails. In my mind I see it working quite well- but next week will be the true test! Glad you're enjoying the challenge. Alia did a great job in designing this!
@alia_801 On my wiggly line theme, in case you don't see the one I sent you on your comment on mine, does the width of the wiggly lines all have to be the same height, or are they just suppose to be wiggly, period, no matter what the height is? Another question, do the lines of the end of the wiggly have to join up with the next picture? I think that's all for today.
@alia_801 Okay -- I might try the B&W shape challenge...I'm really not much of a photog...but this sounds interesting and I'm inspired by what you do...
Sorry, I'm wandering in really late, but thought this looked fun, but having only done two weeks of June and then stopped, and only arrived back on Sunday, I'm only going to manage the rainbow week. I think the line idea is fantastic and Phil @filsie65 did a brilliant job.
@alia_801 I wish I had known where to check, so that I could have commented on everyone's hard work. I never thought you could type in something and it would take you there. Next time, I'll know!
Congratulations to all challengees! Make sure you post your favourite pic of the challenge here to celebrate, and be sure to check out the challenge gallery: http://365project.org/tags/thumbnail-challenge . It looks awesome with all the rainbow and shape shots together!

Most of us see challenges as suggestions, not prescriptions, to help think of things to photograph each day. Maybe take a look at my album for this month: http://365project.org/alia_801/365 and compare it with @olivetreeann's http://365project.org/olivetreeann and @summerfield's http://365project.org/summerfield/365 to see how we've tackled the same challenge in very different ways :)
I hope that helps!
Maybe you could make diagonal lines that zigzag from corner to corner of the pics...
@summerfield What is ETSOOI? I'm confused....
@alia_801 - Your challenge is great and I am desperate for some ideas. Thank you and I will start today :)
@alia_801 - Please correct me if I'm wrong... :)
