VOTE: CSC-27, The Black Card Technique

June 18th, 2013
Thanks to everyone for their entries to the 27th Camera Settings Challenge, which explained how to use the Black Card Technique.

Those who missed the original challenge post can read up on it here:

http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/18081/camera-settings-challenge-27-the-black-card-technique

I was pleased to see that my long-winded description didn't seem to put people off too much -- there were some excellent questions in the discussion that are well worth checking out if you missed them.

It was also great to see the entries, especially as everyone who entered managed to pick the technique up really well! All of the photos submitted are excellent examples of how to use the Black Card Technique. You can see all of the entries here:

Unfortunately it was my job to narrow down the entries to five. This was particularly difficult as there we six people who had submitted photos to the challenge, all of whom really deserved to have made it through to the voting. In the end, I selected my favourite photo from each entrant, and then randomly chose the five that made it through to voting. Accordingly, I must offer my sincere apologies to runner-up @corgimom, who submitted this beautiful and moody shot of the sun setting through the clouds:

The five finalists to vote on are, in no particular order:

1. @colie made excellent use of the black card technique, and in this case it allows the white daisies that would otherwise have been lost against the bright sky to become the focal point of this shot:

2. A beautiful beach shot by @sunshinephoto5 that shows the sunset colours and the details in the clouds very nicely, while keeping the foreground bright:

3. This photo by @btorrey makes excellent use of the boats as a strong compositional element which really draws the eye into the photo, and I love the mist on the distant hillside:

4. A wonderful shot of the sea by @sassik that captures the beautiful colours of the sky, and the reflections of them in the rocks:

5. A great and very creative photo by @myhrhelper that uses the technique to capture detail in the clouds and colour in the sky that is otherwise so easy to lose:

Congratulations to everyone -- these are all wonderful shots. Please vote for your choice below!

I wanted to try this SO BADLY, but just was not to be this time. I have a hard time finding a scene to shoot that fits the bill! Congrats to all these finalists! Great results!

I vote for 4 - there are a couple shots I like. I really don't care for my photo. I really wanted to try this technique but this wasn't the ideal setting. I am really excited to have learned this however since I know I WILL use it the right and I can't wait!

THANK YOU so much for hosting this challenge!! @abirkill

I loved the idea of this challenge, got my tape and card and an alternative black item as spare but just didn't get chance to try for the challenge but will try when I get the chance

Bravo to those who did!
