How are entries selected for voting?

October 11th, 2010
I am new to 365 and I'm curious how the entries are selected for voting. Thanks in advance!

I like to know too. :-)

I *think* Ross just browses the tagged shots and picks his five favorites.

I think Annie's right.
October 11th, 2010
Yeah, Ross and/or his helper/moderator people.

@jillpearce @indiannie_jones @crazyrandomcool yep, usually me, occasionally I open it up to somebody else.

@Scrivna Hi Ross, I think it's unfair to have the same person arbitrarily choose the five finalists every week. Why not get the previous week's winner involved in the judging process?
October 11th, 2010
@vikdaddy that's been suggested before, but it's quite complicated and timely process, the person needs to check the entries are valid (date added, exif info etc) Plus sometimes there are thousands on entries. Maybe we will.

@Scrivna Now I didn't pay much attention when I took Web Design (it was the Facebook era, I had better things to do) but maaaaybe there could be some kinda button (similar to fav) on a picture that people could vote for and then we take the top five from there, just to make it more "fair"? Although then it could be said that some people are more low-key and others have hundreds of followers but just an idea?
October 11th, 2010
@indiannie_jones i think you answered that yourself, it would be drastically unfair to those with fewer followers

@Scrivna Being people are being so helpful, I will add my 2 cents (US). Might you want to think about someway to scroll thru a tag without having to go back to the search screen. Too many clicks to get thru groups of pictures. Idle thinking.

I was thinking the same. The shots for the week's theme would be much easier to browse through. (I only had the 1 cent)

I don't see any problem with the genius who devised this project having the right to select, choose and do what he wants with it! I'm just so grateful to him for the whole idea and find that through it I am meeting so many wonderful friendly people who share an interest in taking photographs - not for competition or to be "winners" but simply for the sheer joy of being able (sometimes) to record what we see and have a bit of fun in a community. Selection of "top five" or any number will always be subjective ... but that's okay! No complaints here .... sometimes they wouldn't be the five I'd have picked ... but "so what"! My choice wouldn't be any "better" or "worse" than anyone else's choice - just different! Maybe if folk want a competitive site they should set up a separate forum ... 365 attracted many of us simply because it is what it is and we don't feel that we have to be at a certain standard to participate.
Rant over!!! And a huge "Thank You" to Ross. @Scrivna

@elizabeth Pretty much summed it up perfectly as far as I'm concerned :-)

@elizabeth @andycoleborn thanks, i always like to hear peoples suggestions on how we can improve the site.

@byrdlip i'd like some kind of slideshow type functionality for browsing tags/searches/favs/projects, what do you think?
October 12th, 2010
@Scrivna That's the basic idea. I'm sure that is something "easy" to do in someone's spare time ;-)

Thank you for the site and the themes. I'm trying to give reasons why I vote for a particular top-five, not always easy, but I try.

My intent in starting this thread was out of curiosity's sake. Not for lack of appreciation of all the hard work. I have just recently discovered this site and I am more than thrilled to have found it. Thank you for all the hours dedicated to such a project. Your hard work is greatly appreciated!!! My only suggestion for improvement would be the browsing functionality as mentioned above. Kudos on gathering us all together for such a creative purpose. Keep up the awesome work!

I haven't joined any theme competition here, but no matter how the entries/winners are selected, I'm very impressed they were far better compared from getting it in "explore" (flickrites might understand what do I mean). It’s a huge compliment and that's one of the reasons why I'm very proud to be part of this wonderful community.(though I'm a member of flickr community as well) cheers everyone! happy photography!!!

I agree with Elizabeth and Andy C, for what it's worth...:)

@elizabeth @french_blue I agree with what you are saying this is a wonderful FRIENDLY community and I thank @Scrivna for all the hard work and creativity you have put into it.

I'm happy to let Ross decide the top 5....for all of the reasons that Elizabeth stated.

And I don't mind in the least if the pics are ones that I might not have chosen.
It makes me that much more interested in the shots.....so I can look at them again.
I like the opportunity to consider another perspective or context.
And I usually find that by the time I've pondered said photos for a second or third time, I can clearly see exactly why they've been chosen, and I am much more appreciative.

Love the process, love the themes, and love not worrying about whether mine's a chosen one or not.
Co-incidentally, once I stopped fretting about whether or not my photos were worthy of being entered into a competition, one of mine was actually chosen!
That was a huge lesson right there, for me! ;-)

Thanks, Ross!
