Back to Basics - BALANCE

December 2nd, 2013
Well either we all went to sleep this week and forgot or I'm not the only one who struggled with rhythm in photography. We did have a few brave souls tag their photos this week for the basic principle, and I'll get those up soon.

Hopefully this one will be a bit easier. BALANCE. Balance in Photography means that all of the subjects in the photo are either symmetrical or asymmetrical. Symmetrical balance, or formal balance, occurs when all of the objects in the photograph are placed on either side of a specific point essentially mirroring its own shape. Asymmetrical balance occurs when one or more objects that contrast one another are balancing either side of a specific point.

Check out the link below for a deeper discussion about balance in your photography.

Tag your images "b2b-balance" and let's see what we can come up with this week. Maybe I'll get off my duff and actually find some balanced images this week instead of just hosting the darn challenge. :)

I'll agree... rhythm was a struggle. =) Looking forward to (and needing some) balance. Thank you for hosting the challenge!

This week, unintentionally, has been all about balance.

@nadaa So glad. :) My life has gotten out of balance and left little time for photography and 365. Thanks for sharing these this week.

@LindaC My pleasure. Wish I was getting more out of this challenge my self...(see above) :)

I'm not sure if this is an example of balance or not. Maybe having everything centered is the opposite of balance.

Going for asymmetrical balance on this one

Finding it difficult to understand this. Seems a bit... abstract. None of the articles I found had decent examples of what is "good" and "bad" balance.

@kaesebiscuit It's not surprising that you don't get it yet, especially with drivel like this out there...

"The second image with the crooked horizon line, tends to pull on your chakra"

WTF?

This was from one of the top ranking pages on "balance in imagery"

If I actually manage to find anything good, I'll come back with a link or two.

@quixoticneophyte I don't know about pulling on my chakra, I think they're pulling my...

@kaesebiscuit Apparently Highkey photography isn't balanced goodly.

"Poor balance is not usually good, for example, a photo with too much light and no contrast."

This was about the best and simplest discourse on 'Balance' that I could find. It's in four parts covering different types of balance.

@geocacheking We have so many different b2b rounds to keep up with...I can't find the b2b-pattern finals...has that one been finalized yet?
December 16th, 2013
@kjbadger You hit the nail on the head. Too many. Had to take a break for a minute, but what to get back to this soon. Pattern has not been voted on yet. I'm working on that now. Rhythm will need to be next, then balance. Then maybe I'll find time to come back to the next challenge.

Uggghhhhh! What did I get myself into? Esp. when this was supposed to help me get shooting again and I haven't had time for that. :)

@geocacheking I completely understand! Life gets pretty darn busy sometimes, and you picked quite a lengthy set of challenges! :) Thanks for taking on this task--it's been quite enjoyable. Maybe we just need a hiatus until after the holidays?

@geocacheking don't give up on this just because we wondered off a little bit. I think getting back to basics is a great challenge/ theme, so once the new year has been rung in let's give it a go again.

Hi there, a question from the hard of understanding here, sorry! Does the pic have to be one you post for your daily shot and can it be portrait or landscape? Thanks folks x
