I looked up abstract photography - being a bit of a purist - and found this concluding paragraph:
‘Abstract photography’ introduces the viewer to the essence of an object. The aim is to help the viewer gain an emotional, almost primeval link to the image. The viewer is supposed to enjoy the ‘feel’ of how it looks. For the viewer, abstract photography is not about knowing and recognising the subject. Even so abstracts are sometimes recognisable as real world objects or scenes.
Quite excited about having an abstract april now! Thanks for showing an interest, I think I have gathered up everyone who has replied in the tags below, please just let me know if you want to be taken off the list at any point!
I have found some interesting pictures and ideas at the link below that I thought you may all find interesting and/or helpful: http://photography.tutsplus.com/articles/70-stunning-abstract-photographs--photo-8826
@emblegemble thanks Emma, I am really looking forward to this. I joined the BW book club which I found very good, but could never quickly find the link back to the info and weekly themes. Is there a way of staying 'in touch' with the group discussion?
@lleo my journey with abstract photography has been a hoot. Just ask @grammyn and @rvwalker.
Hey folks, I'm in. I was actually thinking of doing an abstract April for myself, but I'll love looking in on what everyone else does for the month or here and there. I'm going to be purposely looking for lines, glass, shapes (buildings hopefully), and I'll be trying to "define" abstract as I think this is one area of photography that really eludes a real definition--and really, folks will not agree on it a whole bunch! So, in year two, I FINALLY have a grasp on abstract photography--fun stuff. If any of you are trying to think techniques, I have found ICM to work well here, also lots of windows, repeating shapes, chains. And then there is color, macros, etc. This is gonna be funnnnn!
Hi everyone, I hope you are all looking forward to having an abstract april, I've had a few ideas around repeating shapes, textures and trying to capture the 'feel' of photos, I also like the idea of making the viewer think 'I like it, but what is it??' hopefully this is going to be a lot of fun!
@lleo I think the only way to keep up with the group discussion is to keep checking back to this thread, or if we include everyone's tags when we make an 'interesting' post everyone will be notified, tags are grouped together below from all users who have expressed an interest in Abstract April, please let me know if you no longer wish to be tagged.
I hope you all have fun with this, I am far from expert, so if you have any ideas or suggestions please feel free to post them here! :)
so its april 1st, what shall we tag these? I was going with abstract-april but that was used in 2012, how about abstract-april-2014
a new discussion thread might be called for
Oh! That's interesting @dibzgreasley , I thought there must be something to help navigate the site! Got so annoyed in the BW bookclub always having to search. Will try now! Thanks
Thank you so much for joining Abstract April! I've just had a look through all the pictures, at the link below, and they are fantastic! great ideas and variety already, and we're only on day 2!!
Please take a look at a few of the photos and comment :)
@emblegemble Thank you for organizing. I am having fun and finding it a challenge to describe what abstract is. I have decided to accompany each abstract image with a quote. So, that has been fun too.
@678tabby go to the photo u want to share. right below your photo where the date is, next to the star is 3 dots, click on that, your embed code will come up, right click on that to copy it and come back here and paste it, and post it and tada :)
Hi Everyone!
Thank you so much for all your photos for abstract april!
I think we are up to 440 pictures now, which is really amazing! I've had a look through most of them and commented on quite a few, sorry if I missed you. Why not take a look through all the pictures and add some comments :)

I hope you enjoy the second half of abstract april, its great fun seeing all your different ideas and techniques!
I have had a day at my desk, so this was the best picture I could come up with :)
I found this fun but have struggled with my get pushed as I have to do wild manmade and colourful - and processed. Looking at most of these great shots on here the colours are extraordinary and I don't know how to do that. There is nothing that flash in my house!! Do you just swop colours on the colour saturation on PSE?I have one more day to do mine before husband comes back from a tri away and will want his lap top back! @emblegemble@neatz Are you listening Anita? :-) I see that your pictures are the ones that I have admired on here so no coincidence in my challenge then. lol
@callymazoo Hi Cally, I've been using high saturation on some of my photos to get the bright colours, for example the photo of the keyboard I posted was taken on my phone and edited using the befunky app. Perhaps over edited, but it was a welcome distraction from work ;) lol
You could create one for the second half of the month. I have seen challenges do it for the whole month and week by week. A new thread would push it back up to the front of the discussion topic list.
@emblegemble well this is my effort. It is in no way what the original looked like but I guess that is abstract. I used saturation and probably every filter going on PSE. Less is probably more. It was the only starter colourful object in the house so I had better not be set this task again on get pushed! I know it was not you, but Anita is away and you answered my question regarding getting colour Emma.
@emblegemble Hi Emma, I am so loving the abstract theme that I am doing a whole month of it in this album http://365project.org/dibzgreasley/extras/2014-04

Just a reminder that the tag for abstract april is:
abstract-april2014
We may need to set up weekly tags if it gets as popular as the recent macro march tag!
Discussions and ideas, perhaps themes? are welcome, I'm going to try to stick to abstract for the whole month but I think its going to be difficult!!
@shawnasays photos can be everyday or even just a couple in the month :)
