Have recently become attracted to street photography and would like to start a new theme.
As I understand it, street photography is often B&W but not exclusively or necessarily so. Contains a human presence & element even if it is architecturally inclined. Often defined as "Unposed scenes in public places": so, no street portraiture where the subject is posing - although they may catch you & look into the camera! and not confined to overtly urban areas - could be a beach. Avoid heavy hdr processing, spot-colouring etc...
Catching a fleeting moment WHERE THE PRIMARY SUBJECT IS PEOPLE, doing what people do, being what people are and which moves the viewer in some way.
As I said, I am fairly new to this genre so let's see how this challenge develops shall we? :o)
Feel free to also post your entries or comments on this stream. Here's one to kick it off ... if no-one else enters I could be in with a chance of winning heh heh ... although actually I would have to disqualify myself for taking it be for the kick off date!
@northy well, i did think about it but my brain jammed - wasn't sure how to set a theme without limiting people and street stuff is often the luck of time and place - all these challenges tend to morph as people win and pick finalists and so maybe themes will start being introduced. however if you have an idea of how to introduce themes which could help direct the theme go ahead and suggest please :o)
@gozoinklings we used to have a weekly street photography challenge based around something that was done elsewhere... Pretty broad, but worked well... I will have to see if I can dig it up...
it was the "street photography now challenge"... can't recall what week we got up to here on 365 before abandoning it... the themes were much more esoteric than "architecture"... the first was along the lines of "smelling the street", the second about animals, etc... see the link below...
anyway - this is your challenge so you can decide how you want to go about it... i used to do almost exclusively street photography but my walkabout time is very limited these days so i probably won't be able to participate as much as i would like... https://streetphotographynowproject.wordpress.com/page/4/
I'm definitely not a "street shooter" and don't like waving my camera around in public.... I did take a street shot this morning though. Probably because there were very few people about ;-)
@gozoinklings Thank you very much. I'm glad you tagged me... I like to take street photos perhaps many of them could not be considered as street photography ;)
@jborrases well, it is hard to define isn't it :o) i would like this challenge to be more about people and not really just empty yet wonderful streets - but i am sure it will develop into its own thing over time
@Gozoinklings - thanks for the invite Catherine - my first 365 challenge too - I have been shooting a fair bit of street recently and will endeavour to shoot more for the challenge between now and March 1st :-)
I am definitely in!! One of my favorite genres, and I never thought of tagging my photos as "street" since most of them are taken at the beach these days! Frankly, I don't mind waiving my camera around at all, and I have been known to stalk people I find interesting! ;-)) And, with our upcoming trip to NYC this is perfect timing! Thanks for setting this up!
@panthora Good good :0) lucky you to be going to a city ... enjoy ! Living on a little island the beach is my street just as outside the local shop is if people live in a village although gritty urban street is what I often crave just for the day !
@chrispenfold good :0) about the photo you go to the three dots under your posted image and press the embed code until it is highlighted then copy and you can paste it here - give it a go
@lsanderson55 this is a gorgeous shot Leigh Anne .. it would be perfect for the street challenge if a couple were crossing the road in the foreground :0) That's the challenge ... this could be any moment but when people are captured it becomes a unique moment. First time for this challenge so a few people unclear still.
If only I were braver about street photography I might have focused this better. However this young lady typified so much about today with her well known coffee, mobile 'phone and electronic cigarette. I just had to post this.
@gozoinklings
Hi Catherine, thanks for finding me in the "street" tag and letting me know.. I would definitely like to join.. So all we have to do is tag our street shoots "street-1"? If so I see you guys underneath this tag ;-)
I absolutely love street photography.. I actually prefer everything where are people ;-) But like the candid shoots on the street and sometimes the special moment you can get;-)
@zanet yes, that's right - for this first challenge it is tag street-1 and then the winner will start street-2 etc... i avoided taking shots of people for ages but right now i also like it very much. it will be hard to pick finalists as all shots will be so very different but i think it will get more people interested in having a go - hope so anyway
:o)
@gozoinklings
Should we upload one photo or more, as I started to tag my photos with "photo-1" but I guess I should untagg them if it's only one photo ;-)
@zanet all entries need to be taken within the challenge dates 18th feb to 1st march - and yes you use same tag, street-1, for each photo you want to enter - then you can click on the tag and see all the entries
Dear Catherine, oh sorry, I got your invitation too late. Don't know why but I read your message only now.
I am late posting my photos but I think I took a couple of shots during the required time period which may qualify. I'll tag them when posting.
@kvoloshin sadly too late as voting has started for this first challenge, but there will be a street-2 to follow which will begin when the winner is chosen ... keep an eye out on the right side of your home page :0)

Thank you! Pure coincidence that I had been to the seaside and taken this shot yesterday. 'Street photography' is relatively new to me.
got your names from the street tag and thought you might be interested in this challenge theme - we can learn from each other :o) know any others who might enjoy then please pass it on - thx
PS Not sure how to add a photo to this comment!
