New Technique Challenge Starts Today: Technique #53 ICM (Intentional Camera Movement)

February 8th, 2016
Thanks to @rosiekerr for hosting the previous technique challenge - zoom burst. I am very pleased and honored to host the next technique challenge. There have been so many photographic techniques covered over time here, so I've decided to revisit one that was done a while ago, ICM or Intentional Camera Movement. It is one of my favorite techniques that I use occasionally to add drama to a standard scene. Last week after posting an ICM shot, I had several people say they keep meaning to try it out. So here is your chance.

ICM is a process where you create somewhat of a painting like effect by slowly moving the camera while shooting with a slower shutter speed. Years ago, when I was doing the Get Pushed challenge on here I was challenged to an ICM shot and this is how I was instructed to do so: Set ISO to 100, aperture to 16 and slowly move the camera up, down or to the side. I'm sure other settings and moving at various speeds would vary up the result. Experiment.

Here are some examples of shots I have done:

The challenge will start today, Monday, February 8 and will end Friday, February 19.

One question that folks had during the previous challenge was "does my photo have to be taken in this timeframe?" @skipt07 did some exhaustive research and determined that most of the previous challenges have contained this requirement... so, yes - your photo needs to be taken during the time frame described above.

Please post submissions to this link as well to keep it active in the Themes & Challenges!

Thanks for the tips, because when ever I have tried this it has been a massive fail!

@amandal I want to give your suggestions a try but also wonder if my drive by camera movements count as ICM too
February 9th, 2016
@annied I think so.
February 9th, 2016
@amandal they are really fun to try - and you learn what works and what doesn't as you play around - you must be the passenger though hahahahaha

@annied Good point :-)!

I have never heard of this but the results look incredible so I look forward to trying. Hopefully I'll have better luck than zoom burst technique.

Super choice for the challenge. Time to have some fun!

@mcdougaj Here is the ICM technique
February 10th, 2016
@maree_sanderson Perhaps, maybe a little too able to recognize subject, though. More like a striped, blurred photo than ICM. Does that make sense?
February 10th, 2016
yes it does Amanda...thank you...i'll try again...got to love delete buttons...:o)
February 13th, 2016
@amandal One of my favorite techniques!
February 13th, 2016

@bill_fe @lizhammond Yeah, glad you all approve.
February 18th, 2016
where does the challenge draw the line (if there is one!) between ICM and panning?
Am ok to enter this? No worries if not.
February 18th, 2016
@lizhammond sure why not :-)!
February 18th, 2016
