Mother's Day in the USA is May 8th, which is less than two weeks away. I'd like to start a theme of moms (and dads are certainly welcome too) getting themselves in photos with your children. The photos can be either posed or not so much. It'd be a great way to document some of your family's favorite activities together. Don't worry about your hair, outfit, make-up, age, or whatever other excuse moms have for staying BEHIND the camera, and get right in there with your kids. Remember, you'll never again be as young as you are today!
Let's tag pics with the tag withthekids and see if we can do a bunch in the next two weeks. Feel free to post in this thread to motivate us all!
On a personal note, I happen to be a mother of five. When my oldest daughter turned 18, I made a slideshow with photos and music from her entire life. I have always loved photography and have taken tons of pictures, which are very well organized chronologically. Sadly, when I did this project for her I rarely appear in any of them with her. She is now in Culinary School becoming a pastry chef. She and I cooked together and made cakes and other creations from the time she was in pre-school, but I didn't get even one photo of us doing it.I know that my kids like the pictures that we appear in together when we're looking through old photos.
By the way, no age limits of course, and dads too!
I wanted to start this thread with a pic of my oldest daughter and me together. I took one when she was home last weekend...and I deleted it because I didn't like how I was standing, so I pulled out an oldie:
I love this idea Tracy so count me in. I've taken a few earlier in this project (ie a few years ago) for this very reason. I keep saying I want to post more but really, in my 5 1/2 years here I've probably only been in about 10 with the kids! Here are a couple from a few years ago, yup, I had to go back over 2 years to find any!!
@tracys you're right, I take pictures of the children, but rarely with myself in it. Busy two weeks, but hopefully I can join. @kiwichick what wonderful portraits of you and your children!!
@kiwichick Wonderful portraits, but 2 years is a long time. ;-) I'm glad you'll join in. I surprised myself when I went looking for one with my oldest daughter. She asked me about sending her the one I took last weekend (after I'd deleted it!). @overalvandaan I hope you'll join too!
I was thinking of several moms on 365 when I posted...
@tracys nice thread. While at a Disney hotel recently, a mom was taking pictures of her kids when I offered to take one with her in it. Her face brightened and she was so excited to be included. I told her I have years without a photo of me, so I try to help others!
@alophoto I love these Amanda. I seem to have more with my youngest, and from the ones you posted I wondered if you do too! @tracys That's really sad huh! Did you tell your daughter that you'd deleted the photo? @wenbow Graet shots Wendy.
My only child, a daughter, is now 32! I am also the photographer and rarely appear in photos. You mentioned you are critical of yourselves and delete the pictures you don't like. DON'T! You may be critical now but I hope as the years pass you'll look back and see yourselves more kindly. It took me a long time to accept that although I may not be happy with how I look there are those close to me who love me for many of the reasons I do not :) Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.
@kimmer50 I am going to stop with the deleting. You're right about it. @danette@cookingkaren I had a feeling I'm not alone in this. Let's make an effort to jump into the photos. @kiwichick I didn't tell her I deleted it. She took candids unknown to me of me taking sunset pictures, so she's taking matters into her own hands, but it isn't the same as being together in a photo.
Alright, I'm in. I just had a similar moment of sadness looking back through last year's photos and aside from my son's birth (and I'm so glad I had that photographed), there are zero photos of me holding my baby (or doing much else for that matter). Will have to drag the tripod out though as hubby is away this week!
@rylenlui14 That's great! Nice smiles! @aliha Time goes by so quickly. I hope you can do it. @froggie0628 I'll keep my eyes open for ideas with boys. I feel like it's easier with the babies of course (because I can hold them!).
I took my girls out for ice cream after a concert tonight, and after taking a couple shots of them, I put the camera on the table, made them squish in next to me on the bench, and hoped for the best:
Not the most flattering of angles maybe (how many chins do I have?!?) but I kind of love it anyway. :)
older kids get pretty busy so it took me a bit to get a photo with my daughter...wish my son was closer to home so I could have had both in the picture with me.
@sarahsthreads it's great - so happy, and the colors match! @jackies365 So nice to see you, and a "big kid!" My oldest are away too. Your daughter has a wonderful smile!
@kiwichick That's perfect. I'm serious that there were a dozen photos with me on the picture with my oldest daughter - in 18 years worth of photos! So, so sad. Trust me I took so many photos, but this goes back to prior to phone cameras, and I got my first digital camera in 2003 (not that I ever used it to include myself in a photo with it).

@emrob I find it harder with my bigger kids, especially a 13 year old boy!
