TECHNIQUE CHALLENGE #72 - White Balance

May 22nd, 2017
Wasn't I just here a few weeks ago?

Thank you, kind folks, for voting for my bird's eye view photos and congratulations to the other finalists; i'm truly flattered and humbled. I must admit though that it totally escaped me that my photo was a finalist; so it was a complete surprise to find out i won. Thank you, too, Claire @pistache for hosting the last technique challenge.

So on to the next challenge. This time let's play with White Balance.

You've wondered at some point why your photos are weirdly bluish or more orangey. Time to adjust your camera's white balance.

In digital photography, white balance means adjusting colors so that the image looks more natural. We go through the process of adjusting colors to primarily get rid of color casts, in order to match the picture with what we saw when we took it.

Here are a couple of links disserting about white balance.

THE CHALLENGE:

A diptych or a triptych of the same subject but shot with different adjustments of white balance in your camera.
Here's an example:

As you know getting white wrong is a skill of mine so I'll definitely give this one a shot!!

I keep forgetting about this challenge so I am off right now to play with the white balance!

You know, shooting raw once, you can play with adjusting the WB and get all the effects you want on the "basic" panel of LR or Camera Raw, the top sliders. Indeed, if you shoot a White Balance bracket in any current digital camera, it actually does this. Shoots one and then before rendering the jpegs, varies the WB on the same raw...
